Chapter 1

"Mrs. Sullivan, there's a problem with your marriage certificate. It appears the seal is a forgery," said the clerk with an unsettling nonchalance, leaving Jessica Sullivan, who had come to get a duplicate of her marriage certificate, completely bewildered.

"That's impossible. My husband Anthony Harris and I got married five years ago. Could you please double-check?"

The clerk typed their social security numbers into the computer once more.

"The system shows Anthony is married, but you, Mrs. Sullivan, are listed as single."

"Who is Anthony's legal wife?" Jessica asked, her voice shaking.

"Linda Brown."

Jessica gripped the back of the chair, struggling to keep herself upright.

The marriage certificate, with its bright cover and bold letters, was handed to her. The sight stung her eyes.

If Jessica had any doubts before, thinking perhaps it was a system glitch, the mention of 'Linda' crushed all her hopes.

The lavish wedding from five years ago, the years they spent seemingly inseparable, the marriage she had been so proud of—everything was a lie.

Holding the worthless piece of paper, Jessica walked back home, her spirit crushed.

As she was about to open the door, she overheard a conversation inside.

It was the Harris Group's family lawyer speaking, "Mr. Harris, it's been five years. Isn't it time to give your wife the legal status she deserves?"

Jessica stopped dead in her tracks, holding her breath.

After what felt like an eternity, Anthony's deep voice filled the air.

"Just hold on a little longer. Linda is out there making her mark overseas, and she needs to be Mrs. Harris to stand her ground among the business elite."

The family lawyer cautioned. "However, since you and the missus never made it official with a marriage certificate, she could walk out on you if she ever decides to."

Anthony's gaze fell as he mulled it over, then said, "Linda did give me a daughter. I'll do everything in my power to keep her safe.

"Jess? She's so in love with me, she wouldn't dream of leaving.

"Besides, she burned bridges with the Sullivan family to be with me. She's got nowhere else to go."

In the height of the August heat, Jessica felt a chill as if she had fallen into an icy pit.

Her once defiant choice to marry him, defying her parents' wishes, was all part of Anthony's grand scheme.

All her lingering doubts suddenly clicked into place.

Harris Group, never one for philanthropy, had out of the blue started a charity.

Anthony, who could not stand the noise of kids, showed nothing but warmth to Tracy, the little girl from the orphanage.

It all made sense then why he had been dropping hints about wanting to adopt Tracy—she was his and Linda's child.

Jessica's head spun as she looked into the blinding sun.

Her legs buckled, and she crashed down on the stone steps.

Hearing the commotion, Anthony burst from the house, swept her up, and carried her back inside.

He laid Jessica down on the couch with a gentleness like she was made of the most delicate crystal.

"Jess, is something wrong?"

Jessica raised her head and peered into his eyes brimming with love. She tried to gauge the truth behind them. Was it all real, or was there deceit lurking beneath?

However, she could not unravel the mystery.

Anthony's composure slipped when she did not respond.

"Jess, did you catch wind of something..."

She shook her head. "I think the heat's got to me. I'm all dizzy and sick to my stomach."

Relief washed over Anthony. He stood and turned his ire on Jessica's driver.

"How could you neglect her like this? Go get your pay for the month, and then you're out of here."

Jessica waved him off. "It's such a beautiful day, and I wanted to walk. It's not on him."

Anthony crouched beside her, gently blowing on her scraped knee.

"Your heart is just too big, Jess, too kind."

For five long years, she had been duped, lost in the fantasy Anthony had woven around her.

Jessica's grip tightened on his hand, her heart refusing to believe that Anthony, who loved her so deeply, could lie to her.

Maybe the County Clerk's Office had made a mistake. Maybe Anthony was in the dark too.

Clinging to a final hope, she asked, "Our marriage certificate has been ruined. Should we get it replaced?"

Panic flickered in Anthony's eyes before he regained his cool.

He looked away, avoiding her gaze. "Let the lawyer handle that. You just focus on getting better."

With a sense of despair, Jessica closed her eyes.

"And now, let's welcome today's bride—Jessica!"The banquet hall doors parted slowly, a spotlight illuminating her path.To the grand strains of the wedding march, Jessica, bouquet in hand, made her way to Simon.Jessica was all dolled up for the second time in her life for a big event. The last time she had done that, she had ended up utterly humiliated. This time around, she was not exactly brimming with confidence about her chances for happiness either.Right then, she was seriously considering just turning tail and running.Up on the stage, Simon's hands were a bundle of nerves, his fingers twitching."Jess!"Down below, at her family's table, her parents were looking up at her, their eyes glistening with tears. Sharing the table were the Sullivans, her classmates, and her closest friends. They were all waving and calling out their congratulations, their voices a warm chorus.Jessica was rooted to the spot, overwhelmed, as tears streamed down her face. The emcee was abou

Anthony gestured with pride for silence. "I've come uninvited today to extend my personal congratulations to Mr. Canfield on his joyous wedding."Simon kept his cool, ignoring Anthony's antics."I've got a few photos here I'd like to share with the bride's family and friends."He whipped out his phone, showing off a cozy picture of Simon and Jessica.Simon, ever so considerate, offered, "Mr. Harris, your phone screen seems a bit small. How about we put it up on the big screen?"Anthony smirked. "That would be just great."The tech crew got to work, and soon Anthony's phone was casting to the massive electronic screen behind him.Anthony could not hide his smugness. "Mr. Canfield, the lady in the photo, could she be the secret lover you've been seeing behind your fiancée's back? I'm curious, what's your excuse?"Simon let out a dismissive snort. "The lady in the photo, Mr. Harris—recognize her?""Absolutely! She's my wife."Simon burst into laughter. "But the wife I've heard a

On the eve of their wedding, Jessica played the 'bride and groom can't see each other before the big day' card to shoo Simon away.Simon pleaded from the other side of the door, "Come on, we're going to be together tomorrow night anyway, let me in."Jessica clicked the lock shut. "Nope, it's bad luck. Besides, it's tradition."The moment Simon heard 'bad luck', he immediately agreed."But I miss you so much already. What am I supposed to do?"With a playful roll of her eyes, Jessica teased, "Simon, it's been less than five minutes since we said goodbye."Little did Jessica know, Simon was the ultimate romantic, hopelessly attached at the hip.Left alone after Simon's reluctant departure, Jessica tossed and turned in bed, sleeping just out of reach. She would become Mrs. Simon Canfield by morning light. Their courtship had been a joy, but she knew well that marriage was a whole new ballgame, and it left her feeling uneasy. With the sting of Anthony's betrayal still fresh, she c

Jessica knew Simon's career was leagues beyond Anthony's, his social calendar a testament to his success. She had zero expectations for him or their fast-approaching wedding."It's just a loveless arranged marriage," she confided in her best friend. To her surprise, Simon was hands-on with the wedding plans. He picked out the venue himself and personally approved every decorative detail. The guy had some serious credentials, holding dual doctorates from the prestigious St. Lonsdale University of Arts.He even had a hand in designing her unique wedding ring. When it came to her dress, he made sure she felt valued and involved. The mermaid-style gown she was trying on? A Simon original from his grad school days.Simon lounged on a low sofa, his long legs sprawling awkwardly. His gaze was intense, almost predatory, as he eyed her up and down.Feeling the heat of his stare, Jessica tugged at her dress. "Don't you like it?"Simon rose and closed the distance between them, his hand

Linda smoothed her dress and flashed her sweetest, practiced smile. She sidled up, her neckline daringly low."Mr. Canfield, my hero, do I owe you my hand for saving me?"Before she could bat an eyelash, Simon's secretary whisked her away by the collar.Simon slouched in his chair, his voice dripping with boredom. "You think you're in my league?"Linda's face soured. She was not a knockout like Jessica, but she was no slouch in the looks department. How could Simon dismiss her so easily? She settled back into her chair at the dining table. "Alright, what do you need me to do?"Simon had dangled a carrot in front of her: 750 thousand dollars. With that money, she could whisk Tracy away from the orphanage and they could vanish into the horizon, just the two of them."And who's Tracy's real dad?"Simon planned to play Linda like a chess piece against Anthony, but he needed something to hold over her head.He never knew what Linda might do when she snapped—she was a ticking time

Anthony woke up to some delightful news first thing in the morning.Simon's wedding invitation had arrived.Anthony thumbed through the heavy, gold-embossed invitation, its centerpiece a dazzling sapphire."Snagging a wedding invite was a breeze. So much for the Canfield family's big, mysterious rep," he mused."Odd though, the invite lists only the groom's name. No bride. How peculiar."However, Anthony could not care less about the bride's identity, she was just another heiress from some highfalutin family. He glanced at his assistant. "Are we all set?"His assistant gave a firm nod.Jessica had once boldly faced down her own family, the Sullivans, calling off an arranged marriage to be with Anthony. Then, he was her world, her everything. If anyone was going to step into the picture then, it would be Simon."Ha, the Hudson City golden boy's big day will be crawling with the press. Can't wait to see Simon squirm when the dirt hits the fan.""And when Jess is left with nowh

  • A Song of Longing   Chapter 20

Simon had been a model of restraint for the past five years. He had shown zero interest in the parade of women who had tried to catch his eye, sparking rumors among his family and friends about his preferences. His grandfather had even dropped not-so-subtle hints, saying he did not care if Simon's partner was male or female, as long as he brought someone home.He had tried to move on, even went on dates with other women. However, when things started to get serious, he just could not go through with it.Their surprised looks when he backed off stung every time.He had even sought medical advice."Mr. Canfield, there's nothing physically wrong with you. Maybe you should talk to a therapist," the doctor had suggested. To save himself from further awkwardness, Simon had embraced a life of solitude. He figured he was destined to be alone—until Jessica's name lit up his phone screen again. His heart skipped a beat as he stared at the number. He had to lean against the wall and take

The assistant attempted to reason with him, "What if this is a scam..."However, Anthony had made up his mind. "The company can go to hell. If it brings Jess back, I'll pay any price."The transfer was made in a heartbeat.Minutes later, Anthony's phone lit up with a crisp photo. It was Jessica, sharing a meal with some guy.Jealousy seared through Anthony as he balled his fists. "I want to know who that man is with Mrs. Harris, now!"Anthony's assistant hung up the last call and swiveled around with news that made Anthony's heart skip a beat."Mr. Harris, we've tracked down Mrs. Harris. She's with her ex, Simon."Simon? That Simon? From the high-powered Canfield family?Rumor had it that Simon's family were military bigwigs for ages before they jumped into the cutthroat world of business. There was little information online about Simon and the Canfield family, adding to their air of mystery.Anthony had it pegged—Jessica and Simon were childhood sweethearts, practically pro

  • A Song of Longing   Chapter 18

Anthony kept Linda in the basement for an excruciating three days, without a morsel of food or a sip of water.Come the dawn of the fourth day, he ordered the basement door swung open. The air was thick with the stench of neglect.Anthony held his hand over his nose and mouth. "Ready to make that trip to the courthouse for a divorce?"Linda, her appearance a mess and her body frail, struggled to her feet, her eyes wide with terror. "Anthony, just let me out, I'll do whatever you say."Anthony grabbed a bag of dog food from his assistant and tossed it onto the floor. "Finish this, and you're free."Desperate, Linda scrambled on the floor, shoving the kibble into her mouth. The assistant, phone in hand, captured every moment."Make sure that's saved. I'm gonna show Jess exactly how I dealt with her little friend."He stamped on Linda's hand, and she winced in pain."Animals don't use their hands to eat, do they? No hands allowed!"Linda collapsed, crying uncontrollably, the un
