Cheyanne.

Choosing between Chinese takeout or pizza and coke had always been one of my biggest indecisive choices.

My phone pings.

Gia: why not just order something aside from those two. Something more fancy.

Just as I began to type in a response to her, an email notification pops up on the top screen of my phone.

I rolled my eyes realizing it’s from work before tapping on it.

I jumped out from my lazy couch as I read the message over and over again to be sure I wasn’t seeing things.

I immediately dialed Gia, who picked up before the first ring finished.

“Code red, babe. You need to be here ASAP!!” She responds almost immediately, “on my way!”.

In less than twenty minutes, a knock sounded behind my door. I sucked in a deep breath and walked over to open up for my best friend.

“What happened? Are you okay?” She asked, looking pretty concerned with her jacket worn inside out.

“I got it.” I muttered with a half-cry, half-smile face.

“What do you mean you got it, omg you have an STD?”

“Uhh, no.” I squeezed my forehead. “You’re looking at the new manager of the creative and innovative department!” I say spinning around.

“What!!”

“Girl, don’t joke with me!” She barked.

I whipped out my phone and turned the screen of the email towards her. She clapped both hands over her mouth as her eyes scanned the email. The Gia I know would have screamed immediately but I was surprised when she wrapped her arms around me pulling me into a warm embrace.

“You finally got it babe. I’m so happy for you.”

Funny of me to think I wasn’t going to shed a tear. I bawled out my eyes into Gia’s shoulders.

“Yes, I finally did it.”

She pulls herself away, “ you know what?” She nodded. “We’re having steak.”

“Absofuckinglutely!” I chimed in.

“With some expensive red wine. On me.” She smiles.

The weekend had ended and I finally pulled up to the tall glass building of my work company. About to step in with my newly acquired position.

“Shit, my coffee. I ran back to my Mazda to pick up my drink but as I turned to lock the door of my car, a black van pulled up right in front of me and two masked men pulled me into the van, one of the men clamped his palm over my mouth before I could scream, my coffee hit the ground, the hot liquid splashing across my shoes. I kicked, scratched, tried to bite. But I only earned a curse. A rough cloth covered my eyes, leaving me only with the chance of breathing.

By the time I woke up, I was in a freaking huge room, I mean, king sized bed, huge vanity,

Soft rays of sunlight through the cracked opening of the window—the rich CEO’s daughter’s type of bedroom. Then it dawned on me, I fell into a sullen state of mind and my mouth turned sour. I crawled out of the bed, almost tripping as I ran over to the door.

“Somebody!! I promise you have the wrong person,” I screamed as I banged on it.

“Please, let me out.”

After much pleading and crying with no answer, I sat on the cold tiles, bawling my eyes into my knees. Then the door finally opened, revealing an older woman looking around her early fifties.

My throat hurt from all the screaming, so I just waited for her to speak first.

“Wow, you look just like her. No difference.” She stated with a slight smile that didn't reach her eyes.

“Let me out of here, you have the wrong person. I’ve not done anything wrong.” I cried, fumbling over my words.

“You can’t just keep me here, I have work, my friends— “

“Oh about that…” She picks up the remote from the nearby table and turns the TV screen on. It had been paired to my phone and a series of messages from Gia asking where I was popped up on the screen but the response horrified me. They had impersonated me and sent her a response saying, I wanted to leave the country for a while, saying I’m tired of living and needed space.

Gia had responded with all sorts of messages and the only one I read was ‘you’re being weird Cheyanne, please call me’

Then she opened my emails, there was a well written email— a resignation letter, saying I wasn’t cut out for the job. It went on and on, even one to my landlord telling him I had moved out.

They just deleted my life and whole existence in a day. Something I had taken years to build.

It felt like something out of a horror movie. A nightmare of perhaps me in another universe where everything seemed to go wrong about me.

“Why?” I only managed to say. I thought I was out of tears but hot fresh ones streamed out this time.

“I don’t deserve any of this.”

“I worked hard to build that, all for what?”

Even if I managed to escape, where do I start from?

“I’m Dr Elena Vaughn, and I’m sorry all these had to happen but you kind of have a long history with this family. But I’ll see to it that you’re properly cared for.”

“W—w—hat family?” I stammered. “I don’t even know you.” I snapped.

“Yes darling, I know.” She smiled again.

I’ve always heard of the devil, but I never knew I would come face to face with it one day.

“And if you think you’re not going to comply,” she mutters coldly, her face rid of any emotion. She turned the screen to what seemed like a real time video of Gia in a bar.

Dr Elena sighed. “Look, I would hate it if something happened to your friend.”

Fear enveloped me. “Don’t hurt her, I’ll do whatever you want but leave her out of this!”

“I’m not a monster, I know you’d comply. All you have to do is answer to the name; Ivy.”

I nodded. Forcing my lips shut. I didn’t have the power here.

“God, you look just like her, same eyes, same hair… It's almost frightening.”

She turns to walk out, “And lastly, Ivy darling. You need to eat.”

Cheyanne. At first, it was just two missed calls from a contact saved as Michael. I don’t remember saving it. But when I unlocked my phone, my jaw dropped. The notification on the screen read: You broke our deal. Now your friend is in danger.Directly below the text was a video. Even without pressing play, the thumbnail was clear enough: someone sitting in a chair, blindfolded and gagged. Gia. She looked completely helpless. Before I could process the sight, the phone buzzed in my hand again. Michael.I didn’t hesitate to answer, even with Ronan watching me, his dark eyes hardened with instant suspicion.I forced out a tiny, breathless laugh and held up a finger, silently asking him for a minute. My legs carried me quickly out of the shop before I pressed the phone to my ear. Sweat slicked the skin around my temple as I waited for the voice on the line. I already knew what he was going to say—I couldn't even bring myself to play the video.“What do you want?” My voice trembled.“From

Cheyanne.I walked straight out of the restroom toward the front desk, passing Maxim, who was holding the coffee I had originally wanted. The moment I reached the receptionist, I squeezed my hands into tight fists, the words “Can you call 911?” burning to escape my throat. Only that I didn’t. It wasn’t fear, or anger, but when my knuckles suddenly grazed the square outline of the device in my pocket, the tension in my hands eased for a second. And the hatred burning a pit inside my stomach stopped. It was replaced by hope. I had Gia and I would die for that girl just as she would for me. That time will come, I promised myself. All i had to do was wait. But still, I wasn't going to let him just have his way. “Can I get a matcha latte, please?” I asked. The lady nodded. “Coming right up. You can step over there to pay,” she said, pointing toward the register where Maxim stood leaning casually.Panic hit me. I realized I didn't have a single cent on me—and I’d left the card Ronan gave

CheyanneThe silence was eating me up. I hated how Maxim just sat by the corner of the dining table, his calculating eyes screening my every move. At some point, I left the living room to heat up the leftover pasta from the one we got earlier and he followed. He just wouldn’t leave my side. “Do you want some?” I asked, while dishing some food for myself. He only shook his head. Boring. “Are you just going to stand here and watch me all day?” This time, the annoyance in my tone was obvious. “I’m sorry, Ronan gave those orders.” He said curtly. Letting out a heavy, frustrated sigh, I turned to him—this time, we were back to the living room. Out of curiosity, I asked. “Are you also married?” The question completely caught him off guard, because he finally looked at me, arching a brow as he responded. “I’m not that type of person.” Finally interested, I shifted in my seat, picking a throw pillow and placing it on my lap; while my small pasta bowl sat in my hand. “What do you mean,

Ronan. “Hmm” I grunted. “How exactly do you intend to do that?” I shifted, assessing her as I crossed my legs then rubbed my fingers over the stubble on my chin. She pointed directly at my chest pocket, “I know you’re recording with that thing. But you don’t look like some freak. So I guess you’re here for business.” She shrugged, finally stopping the disgusting moves she had been doing with that pole. “You seem to know much about surveillance.” I said, narrowing my eyes. “Who are you?” “Forget about who I am, mister. Are you down or not?” Straight to the point. I liked that. Even though I wasn’t a very trusting man, and also shouldn’t be having conversations with naked or half-naked women who aren’t my wife, there was something about this lady before me that didn't seem ordinary. She didn’t carry herself like an actual stripper. I noticed how her eyes searched the room, subtly taking notes of the exits, and perimeter. It didn’t seem like anything to me at first,

Ronan.Apples. She had only apples all through the eight hours flight. And each time I took a look to my right, she’s either sleeping, or picking at her nails; which had already turned red and raw by the time we landed in New York. As usual, a car was waiting for me—us, ready to take us to my penthouse. I walked behind Ivy, while Maxim led us to where the car was parked. As Maxim drove us to the penthouse, I had him stop by to get Cheyanne dinner. With my eyes still focused on the iPad in my hand, I asked Ivy… “What would you like to eat?” She didn't speak for a minute, and just as I was about to speak again, she replied.“Chinese—uhm pasta.” Raising my head from the screen to lock eyes with her, I arched a brow. “Chinese pasta?” “No, just pasta.” She said.“You know you can have anything you want, right?” She nodded. “I’m not just hungry.” “I didn’t know you were aviophobic.” I muttered, finally turning my iPad screen down and fixing my attention on her. “You could have tol

Cheyanne.“I’ll ask the doctor to visit again,” he muttered, swiftly getting to his feet. “But for now, you need to pack a few things… We leave in an hour.”I slid the sheets off my body, rising up to meet his height. Though he towered over me, broader and stronger in every way, I didn’t care, he needed to start giving better explanations for the choices he kept making for both of us.“Why are we leaving today? I asked. Ronan stopped abruptly, before turning to face me. Staring up into his eyes, I asked…“What happened?” “Something urgent came up with work.” He answered, giving me the impression he had nothing more to tell me. “Uhm okay. What about tickets?” “We’re flying private.” He said. I nodded. Not like I expected less, but now that I think about it, how did I manage to get transported from one country to another? I hadn’t travelled internationally enough to know all the rules, but I knew one thing for certain, they would have needed my passport to get me here.“Okay...
