LOGINRonan.
Ten years. Ten years in Hell and the first words out of my mouth were: “Where is my wife?!” “God, Ronan, it’s been ten years and the first thing you request for is for some woman?” Elena scoffed. “I’m not going to say it again, Elena.” I snapped and I could have sworn I saw her flinch. “Now we’re on first name basis. I birthed you Ronan, and I will—“ “No!” I cut her off mid sentence, moving dangerously close to her, while the rest of the relatives with plastered smiles and a fake welcome moved a few steps away… visibly terrified. But she remained glued to the ground. Dr Elena Vaughn, my mother stood her ground as I spoke. “You will do nothing, I promise you.” And for the first time, she faltered. I knew that face, because I had worn it for ten freaking years. “I’ll tell you where she is but you have to hear me out, Ronan.” I lifted my left hand to check the time on my watch, “Five minutes.” The room emptied out within seconds, leaving just us in the rich leather smelling room. “She got into an accident and lost her memory, she’s in a haze now.” My expression instantly hardens, “You promised” I said quietly. “Well, she grew and is now an adult capable of making choices herself. Did you expect me to monitor her every move?” “If you had to!” I clenched my jaw tight as I paced around the room. Two, five, seven. Two, five, seven. I said the numbers in my head. And when I finally got control over my raging emotions. I walked back over to her. “I kept my promise, I was in that hole for ten years, and you promised.” “It didn’t mean anything. I did it for you!” She cried out. She walked over to her expensive mahogany desk and poured herself a glass of whiskey. My stomach turned immediately, the amber liquid pouring out from the decanter made my breath hitch. My vision blurred and for a brief moment, I saw a whip being held out in front of me with black timbers walking towards me. Two, five, seven. I said in my head as I shut my eyes, waiting for the stinging pain on my back. But this time, it didn’t come. Only the soft voice of my mother filled my ears. “Ronan, dear. Are you perhaps having a jet lag?” She murmurs, bringing her hand close to my face. “Don’t touch me.” I rasped, through clenched teeth. My pulse raced hard beneath my skin, she knew about the whiskey and whip. She knew every damn thing. “Now would you sit and listen to me darling?” I found myself walking over to the leather armchair in her office. “Now, we’re going to have a proper conversation, like a mother and son who hasn’t seen or spoken for a decade.” She sets the glass back on the table, not even taking a sip and walks over to me, her heels clicking on the polished marble floor. “Your wedding is being planned as we speak, in fact what do you think of this for Ivy’s dress. She opened her phone with a slide and showed me a series of white dresses, expensive designers—ones that Ivy would have hated. My breathing was finally calming, I swallowed the lump in my throat. “She can pick whatever she wants. I just want to see her.” I calmly said. “Todd would drive you, she’s in the estate.” The corners of her lips spread and it doesn’t touch her eyes. I wasn’t going to be fooled like those investors or my father. “Now, you just act right, act like the heir that you are and the whole Vaughn empire belongs to you once the wedding is finalized…” Her voice trailed off and all I could picture was Ivy, and the promise she made to me. And she didn’t stop, every first and last day of the year, the letters she sent—reminding me she was waiting. It gave me hope. So I endured, I persevered so I could get back to her. “Are you listening?” “I’ve heard you. Now can I meet her?” “Todd will take you back to the estate and show you things around, and when you meet her, you can wed her immediately and resume as the head of the Vaughn empire by tomorrow” she shifted in her seat as her phone pinged. “Oh look, Ivy is all ready for you.” She turns the screen at me. And there she was. It was a short video, Ivy was being glammed up, while a series of white dresses were lined up by her left, but it looked off, she didn’t seem like herself, it felt wrong but then, she turned towards the camera and smiled. I had longed for that. But now that I’m finally seeing her in that light, I felt nothing. Only desolation. It had clouded my mind heavily. I thought seeing her again would cure it but it seemed like I was irredeemable. “The wedding could be canceled if you don’t want to today,” Elena cuts in sharply, gesturing with both hands apart. “She would be a little sad…” “No, I’m ready.” “Good, I have a suit ready. Todd will hand it to you at the estate.” She smiles again. I got to my feet, and proceeded to walk out. “And lastly,” Elena said. Stopping me in my tracks. “I’m not your enemy, Ronan. I always want what’s best for you.” I didn’t bother to acknowledge her, I simply stepped out. As the elevators closed, my chest tightened… I would see her in a few minutes. The girl who promised to wait, but I feared, a lot has changed. Would she also see me as a monster?Cheyanne. At first, it was just two missed calls from a contact saved as Michael. I don’t remember saving it. But when I unlocked my phone, my jaw dropped. The notification on the screen read: You broke our deal. Now your friend is in danger.Directly below the text was a video. Even without pressing play, the thumbnail was clear enough: someone sitting in a chair, blindfolded and gagged. Gia. She looked completely helpless. Before I could process the sight, the phone buzzed in my hand again. Michael.I didn’t hesitate to answer, even with Ronan watching me, his dark eyes hardened with instant suspicion.I forced out a tiny, breathless laugh and held up a finger, silently asking him for a minute. My legs carried me quickly out of the shop before I pressed the phone to my ear. Sweat slicked the skin around my temple as I waited for the voice on the line. I already knew what he was going to say—I couldn't even bring myself to play the video.“What do you want?” My voice trembled.“From
Cheyanne.I walked straight out of the restroom toward the front desk, passing Maxim, who was holding the coffee I had originally wanted. The moment I reached the receptionist, I squeezed my hands into tight fists, the words “Can you call 911?” burning to escape my throat. Only that I didn’t. It wasn’t fear, or anger, but when my knuckles suddenly grazed the square outline of the device in my pocket, the tension in my hands eased for a second. And the hatred burning a pit inside my stomach stopped. It was replaced by hope. I had Gia and I would die for that girl just as she would for me. That time will come, I promised myself. All i had to do was wait. But still, I wasn't going to let him just have his way. “Can I get a matcha latte, please?” I asked. The lady nodded. “Coming right up. You can step over there to pay,” she said, pointing toward the register where Maxim stood leaning casually.Panic hit me. I realized I didn't have a single cent on me—and I’d left the card Ronan gave
CheyanneThe silence was eating me up. I hated how Maxim just sat by the corner of the dining table, his calculating eyes screening my every move. At some point, I left the living room to heat up the leftover pasta from the one we got earlier and he followed. He just wouldn’t leave my side. “Do you want some?” I asked, while dishing some food for myself. He only shook his head. Boring. “Are you just going to stand here and watch me all day?” This time, the annoyance in my tone was obvious. “I’m sorry, Ronan gave those orders.” He said curtly. Letting out a heavy, frustrated sigh, I turned to him—this time, we were back to the living room. Out of curiosity, I asked. “Are you also married?” The question completely caught him off guard, because he finally looked at me, arching a brow as he responded. “I’m not that type of person.” Finally interested, I shifted in my seat, picking a throw pillow and placing it on my lap; while my small pasta bowl sat in my hand. “What do you mean,
Ronan. “Hmm” I grunted. “How exactly do you intend to do that?” I shifted, assessing her as I crossed my legs then rubbed my fingers over the stubble on my chin. She pointed directly at my chest pocket, “I know you’re recording with that thing. But you don’t look like some freak. So I guess you’re here for business.” She shrugged, finally stopping the disgusting moves she had been doing with that pole. “You seem to know much about surveillance.” I said, narrowing my eyes. “Who are you?” “Forget about who I am, mister. Are you down or not?” Straight to the point. I liked that. Even though I wasn’t a very trusting man, and also shouldn’t be having conversations with naked or half-naked women who aren’t my wife, there was something about this lady before me that didn't seem ordinary. She didn’t carry herself like an actual stripper. I noticed how her eyes searched the room, subtly taking notes of the exits, and perimeter. It didn’t seem like anything to me at first,
Ronan.Apples. She had only apples all through the eight hours flight. And each time I took a look to my right, she’s either sleeping, or picking at her nails; which had already turned red and raw by the time we landed in New York. As usual, a car was waiting for me—us, ready to take us to my penthouse. I walked behind Ivy, while Maxim led us to where the car was parked. As Maxim drove us to the penthouse, I had him stop by to get Cheyanne dinner. With my eyes still focused on the iPad in my hand, I asked Ivy… “What would you like to eat?” She didn't speak for a minute, and just as I was about to speak again, she replied.“Chinese—uhm pasta.” Raising my head from the screen to lock eyes with her, I arched a brow. “Chinese pasta?” “No, just pasta.” She said.“You know you can have anything you want, right?” She nodded. “I’m not just hungry.” “I didn’t know you were aviophobic.” I muttered, finally turning my iPad screen down and fixing my attention on her. “You could have tol
Cheyanne.“I’ll ask the doctor to visit again,” he muttered, swiftly getting to his feet. “But for now, you need to pack a few things… We leave in an hour.”I slid the sheets off my body, rising up to meet his height. Though he towered over me, broader and stronger in every way, I didn’t care, he needed to start giving better explanations for the choices he kept making for both of us.“Why are we leaving today? I asked. Ronan stopped abruptly, before turning to face me. Staring up into his eyes, I asked…“What happened?” “Something urgent came up with work.” He answered, giving me the impression he had nothing more to tell me. “Uhm okay. What about tickets?” “We’re flying private.” He said. I nodded. Not like I expected less, but now that I think about it, how did I manage to get transported from one country to another? I hadn’t travelled internationally enough to know all the rules, but I knew one thing for certain, they would have needed my passport to get me here.“Okay...
