Chapter 5 The Old Me Is Gone

Author: Anonymous
Once we got home, I didn't ask any more questions.

The two of them got out of the car and walked ahead of me.

"Kelsey, what do you want for dinner tonight? I learned a new recipe recently. How about I make it for you?"

Kelsey gave him a mild scolding. "Your hand hasn't healed yet. So, don't even think about going into the kitchen and getting it wet."

Then, she turned to me. "Landon, what do you want to eat?"

I hadn't expected her to ask me at all. Just when I thought there might still be a shred of humanity left in her, her next words quickly brought me back to reality.

"Landon, you can make dinner later. You're the best at cooking."

I smiled without saying a word, simply watching them go about their merry way.

Alas, that wasn't the end of it.

Cameron acted like he owned the place as soon as we set foot inside the premises. He fetched a pair of slippers for me and kept telling me what to do, as if he were coming home to his own house.

"Landon, put these on."

"Landon, you can put that there."

"Landon, the kitchen's over there. Make dinner, will you? I'll help you put…"

I couldn't help finding the whole thing ridiculous as I watched him putter about as though he was the man of the house.

"Move."

I brushed past them and headed straight for the bedroom.

There were several men's clothes in my closet that hadn't been there before.

I didn't need to guess who had put them there.

"Do you need help packing?" Cameron asked, appearing in the doorway.

I ignored him.

He walked right in anyway. "Landon, you don't have to stand on ceremony with me. After all, I live right next door. We'll be helping each other out plenty from now on."

So, he'd come to declare war on me.

I continued packing, keeping my silence. I had no interest in talking to him.

…

A few minutes later, I carried my suitcase downstairs.

Kelsey was clearly unhappy. "Landon, what are you trying to pull?"

"What am I doing?" I asked as I swept my gaze across the living room for anything I'd left behind.

"I've already decided to let it slide that you pretended to have amnesia. What's this supposed to mean? Are you trying to threaten me?" she snapped waspishly.

I spotted a framed photo of Kelsey and me together. "Think whatever you want. I'm leaving either way."

I tore the photo in half and tossed her half back into the frame.

Cameron came downstairs looking hurt. "Landon, are you leaving because of me? I'll move out if I'm bothering you two."

He started to leave, but Kelsey stopped him. "Don't overthink it. Go back to your room and get some rest. I'll call you when dinner's ready."

He took her hand and put on an apologetic expression. "This is all my fault. Please don't get mad at Landon because of me."

I watched their little performance in silence. Eventually, I had enough. So, I got up to leave.

Kelsey grabbed me and glared at me in disbelief. "Are you still not done throwing a tantrum?"

I shrugged off her hand. "I'll have my lawyer send you the divorce papers tomorrow."

I walked out of the door without sparing her another glance right after that.

I heard her voice floating from behind me. "So, Cameron was right. You were pretending to have amnesia just to deceive me."

I stopped in my tracks, feeling indignant on behalf of the man I'd once been. "You believe everything he says, but have you ever believed your own husband, even once?"

I sighed in derision and shook my head before calmly walking away.

Everyone believed that I would never leave Kelsey, that I would never abandon her to fend for herself. So, no one looked at me oddly when I showed up at the company as usual the next day. There was just a little more whispering than usual.

I'd forgotten everything related to Kelsey. So, I remembered that the company was mine, but not why I'd founded it.

I spent the entire morning reviewing the company's business and operations.

My secretary knocked and came in, placing a document on my desk. "Mr. Emerson, Mr. Sheffield's performance contract is about to expire. When would you like us to prepare the renewal?"

"Let everyone know we're not renewing Cameron's contract. He can leave when it expires."

I answered without looking up. My secretary looked startled, as if she couldn't believe I'd just said that.

"You're not renewing it?" she blurted.

"That's right. We're never renewing his contract. Also, find a new artist to work with."

I heard a small commotion coming from outside my office not long after she left.

The old me really had obeyed Kelsey without question. Too bad the old me was dead and gone. Even better, he was never coming back.

I pushed her away, looked at her, and continued, "When I returned to the office that day… Everything came back to me when I saw the ring you'd made for me with your own hands and the letters you'd written to me yourself. "All of it, including you and all the pain you put me through."Those memories still hurt, even now. "I never dared to hope you'd love me as much as you cared for Cameron. All I wanted was for you to stay by my side. That alone would have been enough for me. That's why I treasured everything you gave me and every memory we shared."I gently cupped Kelsey's tear-soaked face. "But you never cared to know how much I loved you, did you? You were the one who pushed me away."Kelsey was sobbing so hard she could barely speak. I wiped her tears dry, saying, "Make your decision about the company as soon as possible. This is the last kindness I'll ever extend to you."I walked away without another word, no longer concerning myself with Kelsey, whom I'd left behind.I

The company had been operating at a loss for so long that it was now on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. However, I'd built it from the ground up. It represented everything I'd worked for, so I'd brought Samantha back. I needed funding to turn the company around."No. I won't agree to this." Kelsey's hostility was impossible to hide now. "Landon, I'm not divorcing you."Samantha smiled toothily. "As I understand it, Mr. Emerson has already given you two choices. Ms. Bennett, you can't be so greedy."Kelsey shot me a pleading look, hoping I'd speak up for her.I walked over to stand between them. "Since everyone's here, why don't we settle this today?"She stared at me in disbelief. She'd never imagined I could be so heartless."The company or Cameron," I said firmly. "Choose."Kelsey knew that the company would effectively lose its chance to go public if I ditched it. It wouldn't take long for it to disappear from the market altogether.Cameron sensed her hesitation. So, he s

The coffee was just right.I took a satisfied sip of the rich coffee in my hand before casually opening the files I'd left unfinished yesterday and continued reading, paying no attention to Cameron standing nearby. Finally, my secretary couldn't help speaking up. "Mr. Emerson, uhm… would you like me to prepare another cup of coffee?"I handed her the files I'd finished reviewing. "No, that'll be all. You can get back to work."Only then did I turn to Cameron and parted my lips, saying unhurriedly, "Mr. Sheffield, what exactly are you doing? Is there something you want?"My attitude seemed to set him off as he lunged forward and grabbed me by the collar.Unfortunately, I towered over him, and that alone was enough to put a damper on his aggression. The whole scene was so ridiculous that I couldn't help laughing at him. "Mr. Sheffield, I'll have no choice but to call security if you keep this up.""Cameron, let go."It was Kelsey. Judging by how she was still huffing and puffing

I called someone I hadn't been in touch with for a long time. "It's been a while."The voice on the other end sounded pleasantly surprised. "Landon? You actually reached out to me first?""Is it weird that I have? Have you been busy lately? What do you say I treat you to a grand meal?"…The next day, I hadn't been in the office for long when Kelsey stormed in."Landon, what do you think you're doing? Why are you refusing to renew Cameron's contract? I've always been the one who decides whether his contract gets renewed. Who gave you the right to refuse to renew it?" she demanded hotly.I could feel my patience fraying at the sound of her voice. So, I ignored her and kept my head down, reading the documents in front of me.I left her standing there while a steady stream of people passed by the doorway, stopping to watch the drama. It didn't take long for her to blow up, looking thoroughly embarrassed. She snatched the documents from in front of me and yelled, "Landon! Are you l

And so, Cameron was forcibly shoved down into a bow before me.Kelsey was just about to step in and stop me when he suddenly fell to the floor. He clutched his hand and curled up in pain. The sight clearly terrified Kelsey out of her wits."All I asked you to do was bow." I wondered aloud. "How'd you manage to fall and hurt yourself?"Oliver was quick to chime in as soon as those words fell from my lips, "My thoughts exactly! Anyone who didn't know better would think we were bullying him."Kelsey shot me a glare before carefully helping Cameron to his feet. She then called a nurse to help take him away."Landon, you did that on purpose! Cameron still needs his hands to play the piano. I swear I'll make you pay if his injury keeps him from performing onstage and ruins his music career!"She stormed out after delivering her threat.Oliver threw an arm around my shoulders and patted me with obvious relief. "Good Lord! You're finally not letting love blind you anymore. You're actua
