Chapter 3

Author: Liora
I moved back alone to the small apartment I had bought before I mated with Owen and settled myself in.

I did not own much. This apartment was the only thing of real value in my name.

I had actually planned to transfer the apartment to Leo. In my mind, that was the truest form of love I could give my son.

But I held back because of something Emma said.

"That shabby little place isn't worthy of Leo. He's going to be the future Gamma of the pack!"

Raised in luxury under Owen's wing, Leo immediately started whining too. "I don't want that shabby little place. I want to live in Dad's villa!"

My heart went cold as I watched him throw a tantrum.

Owen quickly rushed to soothe him. "Don't cry, sweetheart. I won't let you live in that dump."

Then, he glared at me coldly. "What's your deal, Seraphina? You want our son to live in a place like that?" he asked sharply. "Do you want him to end up being a failure like you?"

Though I was hurt, I didn't argue back. All I did was smile bitterly and shake my head.

At the time, I told myself not to take it to heart because Leo was still a young pup.

But would somebody who truly loved me say such things?

The signs were all there, I was just too blind to see them.

Suddenly freed from chores and obligations, I had time for myself for the very first time.

I cooked myself a spread and went to a concert in the evening.

These were the things I'd never let myself enjoy before.

Owen loved spicy food, while Leo was allergic to seafood. I hated spice and adored seafood.

I'd spent years compromising for them, never once asking myself what I truly liked.

Just then, my phone rang. It was Owen.

"Yes?" I said.

"Where did you put the shirt I ordered last month?" he demanded.

"The second last drawer in the wardrobe," I replied.

After he found it, his tone turned mocking. "If you weren't the only one who knew where everything is in the house, I wouldn't have bothered calling you."

I was just about to hang up when he added, "Look, enough drama. Come home already. My patience has its limits. Leo can barely eat without you around. Don't you feel sorry for him?"

I scoffed. "Owen, get your butler to keep track of where everything is. Don't call me again. Deal with Leo yourself. I don't care.

"When I said I wanted to dissolve the mate bond, it wasn't just talk. Our relationship is over."

Owen was looking up at the sky. His clothes were disheveled. It had only been a short while, yet both he and Leo had grown visibly thinner and wearier.I pretended not to see them."Seraphina, you're finally back," Owen said, his voice heavy with emotion.I didn't bother wasting my breath. "What do you want?" I asked bluntly.Owen's lips were curved into a bitter and sorrowful smile. "Is this really the end for us?"I looked away, my expression cold. "We reached the end a long time ago, Owen. There's nothing left between us now."This was the mate I had loved and defended for ten years. Now that I saw him for who he really was, I no longer harbored any feelings for him.Loving him felt like something from an alternate reality.A tear slipped from Owen's eye. Lips trembling, he choked out, "I'm sorry. I've wronged you all these years. I know I don't deserve your love, but I also know that no one else in this world will ever care for me the way you did. I really can't live with

Emma came rushing over, quickly placing herself between me and Owen in a protective stance. She looked at me with disdain and open hostility. "Seraphina, don't even think about bullying Owen with me here!"You're nothing but a parasite clinging to him for his status, refusing to dissolve your mate bond yet playing hard-to-get. We're both women, so don't think I don't know exactly what you're plotting!"I knew perfectly well she was just stirring the pot, trying to make herself out as the victim, so I raised my hand and said, "Shut up. I don't have time for your nonsense."With that, I turned to leave. However, Emma wasn't done. She lunged forward and tried to grab me, but I spun around and slapped her hard across the face, knocking her to the ground."If you've got a death wish, come at me," I spat.Emma, humiliated and furious, was just about to retaliate when suddenly a sharp crack echoed through the air—Owen had slapped her.He glared at Emma and shouted, "Fuck off! Who do you

During that time, my hard work at the hospital's research center finally paid off. I soon presented a new blood-healing technique at the pack symposium. My mentors hosted a celebratory banquet in my honor, and my colleagues even had a special banner made for the occasion. Everyone was in a joyous and festive mood.Emily and Ada had given me a bouquet of yellow primroses—the rarest and most precious flowers of our pack.I smiled, genuinely and freely. This was perhaps the happiest, most unburdened day I had experienced in years. After the banquet, I walked out of the hall surrounded by well-wishers. I felt light-hearted and at peace.Just as I stepped outside, I saw Owen standing there, carrying Leo in his arms and holding a bouquet of flowers. When he saw me, he quickly stepped forward, looking a little uneasy. "Seraphina, congratulations."Leo looked at me and bowed his head slightly as well. "Mom, you're amazing."Their words and expressions were as if we were still a happy

Leo stared at me pitifully, his lips trembling as he whispered, "Mom, I haven't eaten all day. My stomach hurts."I did not move a muscle. I just stared at him coldly."Mom, can you make me some soup?" he continued begging. "Maybe some roast beef?"I walked right past him, pulled out my key, and slid it into the lock. "No," I said, my voice ice-cold.Leo froze, realizing for the first time that I meant it—that I wasn't just brushing him off."Mom, you've always loved me the most. You can't just leave me like this!" he protested.I stopped and turned to him. "Why? Why should I care for you?"Leo, I'm no longer your mother. You're in Owen's custody now. You were the one who insisted on staying with him. You told me to get out of your house, remember?"Panicked, Leo scrambled up from the ground and grabbed my arm. "Mom, even if you dissolved your mate bond with Dad, you're still my mother. We're related by blood!"That was exactly why I had cherished him and loved him for ten yea

Leo stared at me, biting his lip. Strangely, there was a flicker of grievance in his eyes.I was confused. He had always hated it when I showed him concern in public, so what was all this for? Before I could say anything, Ada stepped in front of me protectively and shouted, "You're all mean! Stop bullying Sera!"Leo, still a child, let his emotions get the better of him and shouted back at her, "She's my mom, not yours!"This was the first time Leo had ever acknowledged me as his mother in front of others. But I knew he wasn't claiming me out of love, but rather out of possessiveness—to him, I was his possession that no one else was allowed to touch. When he lunged forward as if to shove Ada, I immediately stepped between them. Leo lost his footing and fell to the ground with a thud.I didn't react. I didn't even turn back to check on him."Come on, Ada. Let's go. Ignore them," I said, walking away with Ada without looking back.…For the next month, I was either buried in th

Behind me, Owen was fuming, clearly enraged by my calmness.I ignored him and instead scanned the crowd for Ada.When I saw her, I immediately pulled out the cookies I had made for her that morning.Ada ran toward me as soon as she saw me. "Sera! You're the best! These cookies are amazing. They're the best I've ever had!"She also shared the treats with her classmates between her munching and relentless praise. The other wolf pups quickly chimed in with praises of their own, too."Ada, is that your godmother? She's so nice. I'm so jealous of you!"Ada lifted her little chin proudly and declared, loud and clear, "Sera is the best. She's not just a great baker—she's also a healer! She can save lives. She's incredible!"Hearing the pride and joy in her voice, my heart warmed. Tears stung the back of my eyes.I had never felt such trust and love even from my own son.I could still remember the time Leo's teacher told me that he hadn't eaten well at lunch. I had rushed home and mad
