Chapter 2

Penulis: Wheat Grain
Roxie wandered aimlessly through the streets.

She had no idea how long she had been walking when a car horn sounded beside her. A car pulled over in front of her, and Evan got out.

"Why can't I get through to you?"

Roxie glanced at her phone. "It's dead."

He didn't ask anything else. He opened the passenger door and helped her into the car.

"Did you wait long?

"Something really did come up today. I don't have any surgeries tomorrow morning, so I'll go to City Hall with you."

Roxie looked out at the streets passing beyond the window.

"Don't bother."

Evan seemed to remember something. "Right, tomorrow's Saturday. We'll go another time then. The wedding is still a while away anyway."

"You went to the amusement park?" Roxie finally asked, unable to let it go.

"You saw Sylvia's post?

"Then you should understand. She just got back, and raising Seven on her own isn't easy."

The moment he mentioned Sylvia, his expression softened with a tenderness Roxie had never seen before.

"You met her the day she came back, remember? She's sweet, kind, and a little scatterbrained. Once you get to know her better, you'll like her too."

Roxie found it almost laughable.

Sylvia was two years older than she was and already had a four-year-old son. Yet in Evan's eyes, she would always be some little girl who needed looking after.

Evan continued, lost in his memories.

"Back in college, Sylvia and I found an injured stray dog. She felt so bad for it that she started crying. She even gave it the chocolate she'd been saving for herself."

He shook his head.

"That silly girl didn't even know dogs can't eat chocolate.

"We ended up adopting the dog together, but it died less than a year later. Sylvia cried her eyes out and swore she'd never have another dog. I never thought she'd grow up to be such a good mother."

Listening to him recount every little detail about another woman, Roxie dug her nails deep into her palms.

"I don't want to hear this," she interrupted. "And I don't like hearing about her."

Evan glanced at her in surprise.

"Are you upset?"

"Yes. Let's cancel the wedding."

After a moment, Evan nodded.

"That's probably for the best. I never cared much for all that ceremony anyway.

"We could have a destination wedding instead. Maybe Pellerton. Sylvia said it looks like something out of a fairy tale."

Sylvia again.

Whatever warmth remained in Roxie's heart disappeared.

"Evan, let's break up. Then you and Sylvia can be together."

"Roxie." Evan's expression turned serious. "Don't make baseless assumptions about Sylvia. She's like a little sister to me. Can't you understand how hard it is for her to raise a child on her own?

"You know my principles. Once I've set a wedding date, you're the only woman I'm going to marry. You need to be more mature about this."

Then he glanced at her.

"Besides, we've been together for six years. Can you really live without me?"

A dull ache spread through Roxie's chest.

She had watched her mother fall apart after her father's betrayal, and it had left Roxie afraid of relationships.

Yet she had fallen hopelessly in love with Evan precisely because he seemed so principled.

She had been terrified of ending up like her mother, but in the end, she had done exactly what her mother had done. She had given everything for the man she loved.

For Evan, she had learned to cook. She took care of the house and handled every little detail of his daily life. She had even given up her own career prospects.

That was why he was so certain she would always be reasonable.

So certain she would always understand.

And most of all, so certain that after everything she had given him over the past six years, she could never leave.

Roxie had believed Evan was completely different from her father. She had thought a man like him would never betray her.

She had forgotten that betrayal did not have to be physical.

An emotional affair was still an affair.

...

Just then, Evan's phone rang.

He answered, and his voice softened instantly.

"Sylvia, what's wrong?"

"Evan, I'm at a bar. Want to come hang out?"

Evan had always hated loud, crowded bars.

But this time, he agreed without hesitation.

"Sure. I'll be right there."

He hung up, turned the wheel sharply, and pulled over.

"Roxie, take a cab home. That girl is at a bar, and I can't help worrying about her."

Roxie got out of the car.

Before she could say a word, Evan was already speeding away.

He was worried about Sylvia.

But he had forgotten that Roxie's phone was dead.

He had also forgotten that she was afraid of the dark.

A deafening crack of thunder split the sky.

Cold rain came pouring down, soaking her in seconds.

Soon, Roxie could no longer tell whether the water on her face was rain or tears.

She spent the entire night walking through the storm.

Her heart grew colder with every step.

By dawn, she finally dragged herself home, soaked to the bone.

The moment she opened the door, she saw Evan, a man who never cooked, wearing an apron and bustling around the kitchen.

He looked surprised when he saw the state she was in.

"How did you get this soaked? You were gone all night. Couldn't you at least call?"

Before she could answer, a little boy ran out of the master bedroom clutching one of her rare collectible figures.

He crashed straight into her.

"Seven!"

Sylvia hurried out of the bedroom after him.

"Why do you always have to run up to every filthy thing you see?"

Three years later, Roxie Foster had become a household name in the architectural design world. She had developed a distinctive style that drew on traditional hand-embroidery techniques and translated their intricate patterns into the light, shadow, and structural details of modern buildings. Her work was widely praised, and each new design drew attention. She had also finally earned enough money to buy back her mother's old house. The day the deed became hers again, Roxie sat in it, alone inside from morning until night.Finn didn't rush her. He simply waited outside until she finally opened the door, then stepped forward."Come on. Let's go home."He took her hand as naturally as if it belonged there.Over the past three years, their relationship had grown quietly and naturally. There had been no dramatic declarations or consuming passion. When Roxie stayed up all night working on a design, Finn made sure she had a late-night meal and a blanket nearby. Before an important court appear

The day of the hearing arrived quickly.Evan appeared in court wearing a suit that no longer fit him properly. His hair was unkempt, his eyes were sunken, and dark stubble covered his jaw. Sylvia, meanwhile, stood under the watch of court officers with her hands cuffed in front of her. There was no trace left of the delicate, helpless woman she had once pretended to be.The judge's voice carried through the solemn courtroom."With respect to the medical malpractice case, the court finds that the defendant, Evan Shaw, committed gross negligence in the course of providing medical care."His actions resulted in a critical delay in treatment and were a primary contributing cause of the patient's death."The judge continued reading from the judgment."The court therefore orders Evan Shaw to issue a public apology to the plaintiff, Roxie Foster, through a major local news outlet and to pay a total of approximately $250,000 in damages."His medical license is hereby revoked, and he is perman

Evan had no idea how he made it back to his apartment. He picked up his phone and hovered over Roxie's name in his contacts. After a long time, he finally typed out a message."We need to talk."A red "Not Delivered" alert appeared beneath the bubble. He stared at the screen as the seconds ticked by, then stubbornly sent another."Roxie, meet me. Please."Another "Not Delivered."Tears fell onto the screen, but Evan kept sending messages he knew would never reach her."Roxie, I was wrong. Please forgive me.""Please...""Roxie, I'm sorry.""Roxie, I love you..."...At that moment, Roxie was sitting at her computer, completely absorbed in her work.Winning the design competition had brought her an offer to collaborate with a major company. She worked late every night preparing for it, and although she was exhausted, she felt more fulfilled than she ever had before. After pulling another all-nighter, Roxie glanced at the time and suddenly remembered that she was supposed to meet Finn to

Evan didn't even try to defend himself. There was no defense left.In the end, he picked up a pen and signed his name on the notice suspending him pending investigation. That same afternoon, Roxie gave an exclusive interview to the media as the victim's daughter. On camera, she clearly recounted everything that had happened from the moment her mother fell ill to the moment she died. She laid the facts bare before the public, cutting straight through the false image of principle and integrity Evan had spent years building around himself."A doctor who bends hospital rules for a woman he calls his 'younger schoolmate,' walks away from a patient who needs him, and puts that patient's life at risk..."Roxie looked directly into the camera and said each word clearly."He doesn't deserve to wear that white coat."Back home, Evan sat in front of the television as the flickering light from the screen washed over his face.He stared at Roxie on the screen, unable to tell whether what consumed h

Shock slammed through Evan, wiping his mind clean.Back then, Sylvia had handed him a stack of documents and told him they were personal guaranty forms for the project. He had never imagined that the sweet, innocent girl he trusted would deceive him, so he hadn't bothered reading them carefully. He never expected that she had already been setting a trap for him even then, one designed to drag him down with her.Evan slowly raised his head. His once calm, steady eyes now blazed with fury, yet held a coldness that cut to the bone.He felt like the biggest tool in the world. For this woman, he had abandoned every principle he claimed to live by. He had hurt Roxie again and again and had indirectly caused her mother's death.Because of this woman, he had lost everything he treasured most in his life, only to discover that the woman he had sacrificed it all for was this vicious and calculating."Get out."Sylvia's smile stiffened for a moment, but she quickly recovered her smug composure."

Sylvia's crying only made Evan's headache worse. He pressed his fingers to his temple, his voice hoarse. "What exactly happened?""I don't know..." Sylvia sobbed, nearly falling apart. "The funding has completely dried up, and the project has been shut down. Now they want me to pay damages too! Evan, I need a huge amount of money to get my accounts unfrozen. If I can't, I'm finished. I could go to prison!"She looked at him desperately. "Can you help me?"As Evan listened to her cry, a deep sense of exhaustion and irritation rose inside him."Sylvia, I don't have any money left."I gave you everything I had. The house and car are already mortgaged. I don't have a cent left."He was already going to have to swallow his pride and borrow money from friends just to repay Roxie. Where was he supposed to find anything more?Sylvia's crying abruptly stopped. She stared at him as though she couldn't believe what she had heard. Then something seemed to occur to her."Wait, Evan.
