Chapter 2

Author: Good Time
The man who once loved me no longer existed.

Gary used to follow me to every fashion exhibition in the country, just to support my dreams. Even in small boutiques overseas, he held my hand and swore he would stand by every decision I made.

Because I loved him, I gave up my career after we married and stayed home to take care of him. My friends often invited me to fashion shows, but I always turned them down.

In my gray, colorless life, the only comfort I had left was the collection of clothes I once poured my heart into. They were locked away in my closet, carrying the weight of my abandoned dream.

He knew how much those things meant to me, yet he still allowed Lucy to trample all over me.

A week from now, I'd be starting a new life. His life, on the other hand, would come to an end. With that thought, my emotions finally settled.

However, the next day, one phone call from Lucy shattered my peace.

"Zoey, are you doing this on purpose? Not a single one of those dresses fits me! I know you hate me, but getting back at me like this is too cruel, don't you think? How could you be so heartless?"

Confused and furious, I hung up on her.

However, the look in Gary's eyes made my stomach drop. "Zoey, you need to apologize," he said.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How could he say something so absurd? "You two stole my designs, and I haven't even held her accountable. Why should I be the one to apologize?"

His face darkened instantly, irritation flickering in his eyes. "Zoey, can't you be more sensible? No matter what, you ruined Lucy's banquet. If you refuse to apologize, I'll have to reconsider Mr. Johnson's medical expenses this month."

The mention of my dad made my heart sink, followed by a wave of bitter despair.

Once, Gary had treated my dad with deep respect. On the day of our wedding, he had knelt before him, swearing to love me for life. Whenever my dad's illness flared up, Gary was always the first to rush to his side.

People used to praise him for being so devoted, saying I had married the right man. Even my dad often held his hand with tears of gratitude in his eyes.

It was said even the most devoted child grew weary after years at a sickbed, yet he, with no blood ties, cared for my dad tirelessly for ten years.

However, now, he was threatening my dad's life for Lucy's sake. The sorrow in my chest was overwhelming, but for my dad's sake, I had no choice but to give in.

I had no savings after years of being a housewife, so I borrowed money from a friend to transfer my dad to another hospital. By coincidence, it was right next to my new job in Pereem. That way, I could cut ties with Gary once and for all.

That afternoon, Gary dragged me to Lucy's place to apologize.

She loved cats, and her house was full of them. The moment I stepped inside, they lunged at me, their claws tearing bloody scratches down my legs.

Only then did Lucy appear, feigning surprise. "Oh my, I forgot Zoey is afraid of cats. Sorry about that. There are just too many. I can hardly keep them under control."

Gary's eyes were full of concern for Lucy. He shook his head and said, "It's nothing. It's just a few scratches. Zoey's not that delicate."

I used to be afraid of cats. Five years ago, a stray cat had pounced on me. The shock was so severe that I lost the baby I had been carrying for eight months.

"Zoey, I have nothing to explain. I'm just a worthless man. You must want revenge, right? I'll give you the chance to do it with your own hands. Kill her, and I'll take the blame for you. As long as I can atone, I'll do anything."Come on, Zoey," Gary said.I stepped back and said coldly, "There's no need for that. Once my hands are stained with blood like yours, they'll never be clean again. I want to win with dignity—clean and fair."With that, I pulled out my phone and spoke into it. "You can come in now."A loud crash followed as the basement door was forced open. A squad of policemen stormed in, and among them was Charles. The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened. He wrapped me tightly in his arms. "Zoey! You're safe! I was worried sick about you…"My heart warmed, and for the first time, I hugged him back. "I'm fine, Charles."I had already sent all the evidence to the police, but with so much destroyed, a conviction was impossible without a direct confession. That was why I

The shock hit me hard. Gary actually remembered. However, had I ever truly forgotten? We had once been so deeply in love. Back then, he was just a poor boy who stood in line for three hours just to buy me my favorite cake. We swore by the ocean that we would be together for life. However, this was already my thousandth lifetime. I no longer wanted to be with him.I closed my eyes, letting the heat of old love rise for a fleeting moment, then opened them again. My gaze was cold. "Fine. I'll go back with you. I hope this gift of yours is worth it."Charles caught the corner of my sleeve, his eyes clouded with worry and confusion. I held his hand, gave it a gentle pat, and told him with one look that I was fine. The way we moved in quiet harmony only stoked the jealousy burning in Gary's bloodshot eyes. He had no right to question it, so he lowered his head in pain.I returned to the country with him. Secretly, I switched on a livestream and descended into the basement. There, I

"Sorry, Zoey. I'm so sorry…" Gary's breakdown terrified Lucy. For the first time, she truly felt fear. Gary abandoned his company and work. He even stopped eating, drinking, or sleeping, and searched desperately for any trace of me.Eventually, he learned from my dad's nurse that I had once mentioned Pereem in conversation. He bought a ticket and flew there without hesitation. He wandered for seven days and nights in the foreign city. Exhaustion finally claimed him, and he collapsed on the streets. He thought of how I had endured 999 lifetimes just to save him. Even if it cost him his own life, he was determined to find me.At last, the moment he saw Charles, his strength gave out, and he fainted. That morning, after finishing my work, I noticed Charles looking restless, as though he had something to say. I caught his hesitation and asked, "What is it, Charles?"He sighed, pointed toward the room, and said, "You should see for yourself."Curious, I walked over before freezi

Gary had come to my dad's grave to make amends and apologize for failing to protect his daughter. However, the moment Gary arrived at the cemetery, fury burned through him at the sight before him. Lucy stood there, barking orders at people to pour filthy water over my dad's grave, covering it with various foul things. Even the portrait of my dad had been defiled.Lucy laughed triumphantly. "Zoey, so what if you disappeared? Mr. Johnson is still here, stuck in the ground! What an uncaring daughter. He died for you when he was alive, and even in death, he can't find peace because of you!"Gary's gaze turned to ice, and his voice was so cold that it could freeze a man where he stood. "Lucy, what the hell do you think you're doing?"The moment Gary appeared, Lucy panicked. However, when she saw the men obeying her orders at her side, she hardened her heart. If she was going to cross the line, she might as well go all the way. "Grab him!" she shouted. However, her plan fell apart

Gary's name was everywhere on social media, impossible to avoid even when I wasn't looking for it. The headlines all said the same thing—the once-celebrated young entrepreneur had lost his mind.Drunken binges, stomach bleeds, and whispers of DUIs. The board of directors was said to be furious and ready to explode. However, none of that had anything to do with me. Finally, after work hours, I finished sorting through the documents I had taken and mailed them back home. The day I left, Gary stumbled back from another night of indulgence, only to find the apartment stripped bare. On the dining table lay a single sheet of paper. He glanced at it and froze. It was a divorce agreement. It was already signed at the bottom with my calm and precise handwriting.A strange panic gripped him. For the first time, he opened the door to my room to find it empty. Not a trace of me was left behind. It was as if I had never lived there at all.He tore through the house like a madman, searching

That night, I couldn't even remember how I made it out of there. By the time I stumbled into the hospital, numb and hollow, the doctor's voice was already heavy with regret. "I'm sorry. Your dad's breathing stopped tonight. We've declared him dead."The sting on my face didn't matter anymore. I threw myself onto my dad's still body and broke down. All I could think about was how my mistake of loving the wrong man had dragged him into this pain. "Dad, I'm sorry. I swear I'll make them pay for this," I cried, choking on every word. After the funeral, I dialed a number I hadn't contacted in years. The next day, carrying nothing but a scar across my face, a small suitcase, and a few things that could destroy them, I boarded a plane. This wasn't goodbye forever. It was just temporary. Before takeoff, Gary called. "Zoey, where the hell are you? Why aren't you home?"My voice was calm. "Didn't you see the divorce papers on the table?"He snapped angrily, "I saw them! What are you
