Chapter 3

Author: Margot
I woke up in the middle of the night. The room was pitch black except for the faint blue glow of the flame lamp on the wall.

Lily had fallen asleep, slumped against the edge of my bed. Her lashes were still wet with tears, her face tired but unyielding.

I stayed perfectly still, careful not to wake her, but my thoughts kept spinning. Everything that had happened lately played over and over in my mind.

Clearly, werewolves were way too tough, so killing them was next to impossible. If I wanted to get back to the human world, ordinary suicide methods wouldn't cut it.

And Lily? She always found me at the worst possible moment, throwing herself into saving me like her life depended on it.

Not only did I fail to die, but I also ended up suffering, only to wake up and face Ryan and Eleanor all over again.

This wasn't working. I needed another way out.

Lost in thought, I barely noticed as Lily rolled over and sleepily tucked the blanket around me.

A moment later, her voice brightened with excitement. "Luna, you're awake?"

I gave a small nod, my voice rough as I said, "Lily, if I ever disappear one day, don't be sad. It just means I've finally gone home. Make sure to check the hidden compartment at the bottom of my jewelry box. There's something there for you."

"Luna, what are you saying?" Lily rubbed her eyes, staring at me in confusion. "If you're going home, why wouldn't you take me? You must still be half-asleep. There's no way you'd just vanish, not with me here."

I smiled but didn't argue.

"Maybe I am," I said.

At dawn the next day, I changed into a practical fur outfit and slipped out secretly. Of course, Lily stuck to me like a shadow, even though she had no idea what I was really up to.

We ventured deep into the dense forest.

After offering a hefty tribute of gold, fragrant herbs, and moonstones, I finally earned an audience with the legendary oracle priest.

This was my new plan.

It was too bad the oracle priest couldn't see through my origins. He just kept droning on with his prayers.

"Luna, how could you not belong to this world?"

His voice was gentle but firm.

I felt my heart sink, but I clung to one last hope and pressed further. "Do you sense anything extraordinary about me?"

The priest murmured a quiet prayer and smiled kindly. "Luna, you carry yourself with noble grace. Of course, you're extraordinary."

Once again, my hopeful heart plummeted.

On the way back, Lily noticed my gloom and thought I was upset about Ryan. She babbled ridiculous stories, trying to cheer me up. Still, I couldn't muster a laugh.

As we reached the edge of the dense forest, a sudden burst of laughter cut through the air. Lily and I tensed up, our heads snapping toward the sound.

Perched on a high tree branch was an old, bearded sorcerer, tipping back a flask. His tattered felt hat shaded his eyes, but his gaze was clouded yet strangely sharp.

"Who are you?" Lily stepped in front of me, her voice edged with protective fury. "What are you staring at? Show the Luna some respect!"

The old man only laughed harder, ignoring Lily completely as his eyes stayed fixed on me.

"You're walking a path that wasn't meant for you. The chains you're carrying were never yours to bear. You've been here five to six years now, haven't you?"

"Bullshit! We just got here!" Lily snapped back without thinking.

However, my heart was hammering so hard I thought it might explode.

He knew. He could tell.

I fought back a tremble and nodded slowly. "Can you take me home?"

The old man stroked his chin, then hopped down from the tree. "There might be a way."

I caught his meaning right away. "Money isn't a problem."

He laughed. "What kind of man do you think I am?"

He pulled out seven small paper sachets, each filled with silvery powder.

"Seven doses of magic powder. Take one each day. Dissolve it in water and boil it over high heat. By the seventh day, it'll be the full moon. If your heart's truly set on leaving, that's when you'll find the door home."

My hands and feet went weak with excitement, and I nearly dropped the sachets as he handed them to me.

While climbing into the carriage, I slipped more than once. I would've fallen flat on my face if Lily hadn't caught me in time.

Back at the estate, I called for the maid at once and had her bring the small brazier to my room. Not wanting Lily to grow suspicious, I made up an excuse to send her away.

Alone at last, I sat in front of the brazier, gazing into the bowl of water. My heart pounded so hard I could barely catch my breath.

I was finally going home. After all this time, I was finally going home!

Hands trembling, I carefully pulled out the first sachet of magic powder, clenched my teeth, and poured it into the water.

Ryan began spending entire days and nights in my room. He seemed to have lost his mind, muttering endlessly about memories from the past, laughing one moment and crying the next.At first, Lily just watched blankly, but her disgust grew with each passing day."Who the hell are you putting on this show for?" she snapped. "Where were you when the Luna actually needed you? Now you regret it? Well, it's too late!"Ryan acted like he didn't hear her and continued rambling, "Her favorite flowers were Nightshade Vine. She said she wanted to plant them beneath the window back then. I even won the seeds at an auction, but never gave them to her. She wasn't a freak. She was my true mate…"My head throbbed from listening, but I couldn't bring myself to leave. Every day, I waited for Lily to open that jewelry box. Inside were things I'd meant for her, yet she never even touched the box.I let out a sigh. Why couldn't I reach her in her dreams?A few days later, the Royal Court sent an enforc

The old man kneeled on the ground, pleading for mercy without pause, but Ryan paid no attention. He sat in the chair, gaze fixed downward, spinning the ring from our mate-bonding ceremony around his finger.I couldn't tell what he was thinking, but he seemed down.A long moment passed before he finally rose to his feet."Lily, what did you just say about the Luna?" he asked, his voice quiet and strained.Lily had been so caught up in yelling at the fake sorcerer that she'd forgotten why she came. But now, at his question, it all came flooding back.Fear and confusion twisted her face. "I can't explain it. Alpha, you'd better see for yourself."Ryan's chest tightened instantly, his pace quickening. He stayed close behind Lily as they reached my room—a place he hadn't stepped into in far too long.Lily's steps were uneven. "I only meant to clean the Luna's face this morning, but then I saw she looked different.""Different?"Ryan frowned as he pushed the door open with a sharp s

I didn't care about anything anymore and lunged for that glowing white light. But every time I was about to touch it, it flickered away—like it was taunting me—only to reappear a few feet away moments later. After a few tries, I was too exhausted to keep going. Was it messing with me? Who would've thought this light only showed up when I was in an accident, not when I actually wanted to die?I finally got my chance, and now it was just out of reach.Suddenly, a voice whispered in my ear, "Susan."I flinched. "Who's there?"The voice continued as if I hadn't spoken. "You're a decent person, and I'm willing to help you get home. But are you satisfied with leaving just like that? Don't you want to see how Ryan and Eleanor react first? Just hold on a little longer. You'll be home soon."Then, the voice disappeared. No matter how much I called out, there was no answer. My heart nearly jumped into my throat as I realized the Moon Goddess might actually be real in this world! With no

After that incident, my hope of returning home faded even more. I spent nights lying awake, staring into the darkness until morning.Lily, worried I might do something reckless, barely left my side, keeping an even closer eye on me. And just like that, another month slipped by.I spent my days listless, barely mustering the energy to leave my room. Then one day, the Lycan King, Dominic Darcy, arrived to inspect the Bloodmoon pack.As Alpha of the Bloodmoon pack, Ryan had no choice but to host a family dinner in his honor. I felt like I'd been dreaming for ages. I was so close to a white light in the dream, just within reach. But the moment I stretched out desperately to touch it, it hurled me back violently. My eyes fluttered open slowly, only to hear shouting."Get out! The Luna doesn't want to see you!""How dare you! You're just a maid. How dare you use that tone with me? Someone! Drag Lily out and whip her hard!""Stop!" My hand lifted weakly, my voice barely a whisper. "Ryan, you promised me you wouldn't hurt Lily.""Look what your coddling has done to her!" He let out a furious laugh. "I'll have her tongue ripped out one of these days!"Lily ignored him, hurrying to my bedside and clutching my cold hands in hers as if she'd never let go. "Luna, you're finally awake!"I gave a nod, then stiffened. "How long was I out?""You've been unconscious for over a day. I was going out of my mind!""Over a day?"I tried to push myself up, but my body wouldn't listen, and I fell back against the bed.

By the time Lily got home, I'd already put away the tools for brewing the magic powder.Over the next few days, I kept making excuses to send Lily out so I could secretly simmer those shimmering silver powders on the small brazier in my room.I was supposed to take one sachet of magic powder each day for seven days. Tonight, the seventh night, was also the night of the full moon.I had just finished drinking the last sachet when the door suddenly swung open."Luna, something terrible's happened! You need to come—"Lily's voice cut off the next second. She saw the steaming bowl in front of me, and her face went pale."Luna, what are you doing?" Her voice held a note of alarm. "What are you drinking? You're not doing something stupid behind my back again, are you?"I set the bowl down calmly. "Relax, it's just herbs to ward off the cold. The temperature dropped last night, and my throat's been scratchy."She still looked doubtful, so I quickly shifted the subject. "You barged in
