—Sophia's POV—

"The experiment isn’t over. It’s only just begun."

Ethan's words hung in the air, a chilling echo that refused to fade . I stared at the photo once more—Clarissa's face, the girl beside her, their eyes hauntingly familiar. A mirror of mine. A mirror of Ethan's.

"Bring her in," Ethan commanded, his voice reverting to its usual cold precision.

Andre nodded and exited the room.

I held onto the envelope tighter, the keycard inside it kept pressing hard against my palm. I had a lot of questions swirling in my mind, each one of them needed an answer.

"What is the plan when she begins to speak up?" I whispered.

Ethan's gaze met mine. "We listen. But we trust nothing until we see proof."

The door creaked open. Clarissa entered, her posture poised, eyes scanning the room with calculated calm. She wore a tailored white coat, reminiscent of a lab uniform.

Behind her, the girl from the surveillance footage followed. She appeared younger than expected, perhaps nine years old, cl

—Sophia’s POVEthan didn’t speak for a long time.He just stood there… still as stone, his eyes locked on the charred piece of paper Andre had handed him. His fingers slowly crumpled the edges as if trying to squeeze the meaning out of it. “You can’t outrun your own blood.”I watched him. I watched how still his body was, but his chest… it rose and fell differently now. Shallow. Erratic. And I knew. He was afraid. And that terrified me more than anything.“Ethan…” I whispered, but my voice came out like a broken thread. He didn’t answer. He just stared.Elara shifted in my lap, her small hand tightening around my finger even in her sleep. That fragile grip pulled me back to the present.“We need to go somewhere safe,” I said. “We can’t land in upstate anymore. Not if Wolfe already got there first.”Ethan finally turned his head. His voice was gravel when it came. “There is one place left.”Andre raised a brow. “You mean that house?”Ethan nodded once. “The one nobody knows about.”A p

—Sophia's POVExperiment A.J. // Subject 03.The words echoed like a drumbeat inside my head. Louder. Louder. Like they were carving into bone.Ethan held me upright, but I could feel the tremble in his arms. He wouldn’t show it on his face—never—but I could feel the fear in his pulse."Andre," I whispered, my throat like sand. "Where did these come from?"He hesitated. Just for a second. But it was enough."The basement," he said. "There’s a room. Sealed. We cracked it open this morning. Found the files, the surveillance footage, the experiments... everything."I turned to Ethan. His face had gone blank. Like someone had pulled the color from his skin."This was your house," I said. "You lived here. And this was underneath it the whole time?"He didn’t answer. He didn't need to.Because silence was the answer. The basement door creaked like something ancient and wrong.Andre led the way, flashlight in hand, but the flickering bulb overhead cast long shadows against the narrow walls.

—Ethan’s Pov —Her smile was venom wrapped in silk.“To help,” Ivory had said. And then: “To destroy everything.”I didn’t flinch. I couldn’t afford to. My grip tightened around Sophia’s hand, not to comfort her—but to remind myself she was still real. Still here.Ivory stepped forward. Heels clicking against rusted concrete like the ticking of a goddamn bomb.“Why do you look so surprised? ,” she said. “I guess you were thinking you could hide from the truth right?, Julian?”That name. Like nails down my spine.Sophia stiffened beside me.“Stop calling me that name, Ivory,” I growled with annoyance.“Why not?” Her smile curved crueler. “That’s who you are underneath all this... billionaire armor. The orphan boy who ran. The liar. The coward.”I stepped forward. She didn’t flinch. She wanted a reaction. A crack. She wouldn’t get it.“What do you know about the video?” Sophia asked, voice tight, raw.Ivory tilted her head. “Oh, darling. So polite.” Her eyes dropped to Sophia’s stomach.

ETHAN’S POV —The silence that followed the call felt like the calm before a storm that would rip everything apart. My fingers still trembled, clutching the cracked phone as if it might bite me back.“We know what you have.”The words echoed, sharp and accusing. What did they know? How much?Sophia’s eyes searched mine—fear flickering beneath the surface—but I couldn’t let her see the full fracture inside me.“Who was it?” she asked, voice barely steady.“No idea.”I should have felt something.Anger. Rage. A need to fight back. But all I felt was cold. Empty.Like a man who had run out of arrows but still had to stand at the edge of the battlefield.Sophia reached out and rested her hand on mine. The touch was small, but it anchored me to something I hadn’t dared hold on to.“Whatever this is, we face it. Together.”I nodded, but the lie tasted bitter.Together.I wasn’t sure I still knew what that meant anymore.---Hours later, I sat in the darkened room, the black feather still o

    — Ethan’s POV —The black feather burned in my palm. I stared at it like it was a brand searing my skin. But the pain wasn’t physical. No. It was something deeper—an ache I couldn’t swallow down, no matter how tightly I clenched my fists. The way it fell from that man’s hand—like a silent warning carved out of shadow and spite.I wanted to tear it to pieces, crush it beneath my heel. But I didn’t.Because it meant something.Something dark. Something real.Something I still didn’t understand.Sophia was watching me, her eyes wide and unblinking. The faint tremble in her fingers gripped mine as we sat in the car, parked too far from safety but close enough to the past that haunted us both.“Ethan… what now?” Her voice was barely more than a whisper.I swallowed. The words wouldn’t come easy. How do I tell her that this black feather wasn’t just a symbol—it was a promise? A threat wrapped in a riddle. That whatever game was playing out wasn’t just about us. It was about everything we t
