— Sophia’s POV

The beeping sounds of the machines didn’t seem like human, but they helped him breathe, they hummed for him, and ticked for him.

It was all cold, flat, metallic. There was nothing soft about it. It sounded nothing like my Irene.

But I still clung to those sounds anyway, because they were the only proof I had that my boy was still here with me.

I placed my hand on his chest, I didn't want to trust the wires, or trust the monitors either.

But just the rise and fall that I could feel under my palm, even though it seemed too shallow, and too fragile, it was evidence that his breath was there.

“Please don’t leave me baby,” I whispered again. I kissed his forehead and my lips brushed his dark curly hair.

He smelled like sterile and sweat and strong antiseptic. Not the usual warm, and messy smell of home.

Ethan sat in the chair on the other side of the bed.

His elbows was on his knees, and his face buried in his hands. He hadn’t moved or said anything in hours. H

—Sophia’s POVThe beeping had gotten inside my head. I couldn’t tell anymore if it was real or just the sound of my blood in my ears. Every second. Every beat. Reminding me he was still here. Or warning me he might not be.Ethan was slumped forward again, forehead pressed to the bed rail, his hand covering Irene’s tiny hand. His back rose and fell in sharp jerks. I don’t think he was asleep. I don’t think he even remembered how.I sat on the edge of the bed, numb from holding myself up. My spine ached. My eyes burned like sand. But I couldn’t close them. Not when Irene’s chest rose so unevenly. He stirred again. Not much. Just a twitch of fingers, a shiver in his lashes.“Baby?” My voice cracked. I leaned down.“…Mom.”The word was hoarse, broken. But it was there. His lips moved again, slow, like he had to fight for every syllable.“…cold.”I swallowed hard, grabbing the blanket higher around him, tucking it under his chin. My fingers rubbed his arms, his chest, trying to press m

—Sophia’s POVThe night folded into morning without permission. I didn’t even know when the sky shifted. The blinds bled gray light across the room, cutting sharp lines over Irene’s body, over Ethan’s shadowed face. Everything felt wrong. Too quiet. Too loud. My heart beat like it was trying to make up for his.Ethan hadn’t moved from the chair again. His hands were locked together, pressed against his mouth like prayer or punishment, I couldn’t tell which. His eyes stayed glued to Irene’s chest, rising, falling. Rising. Falling. Every breath sounded like gravel through water.Irene stirred, his lashes twitching, a soft sound scratching out of his throat. I leaned close, my body trembling from sitting in the same position for hours. “Baby?”His lips shaped something. I bent lower, ear pressed near his mouth.“…tired.”Just that. One word. Fragile. My chest collapsed. I kissed his hairline, his temple, his cheek. “I know. I know, sweetheart. You rest. We’re here.”Ethan shot forwar

—Sophia’s POVThe morning after his whisper didn’t feel like morning. It felt like someone had dragged the night across the floor and left scraps of light on the walls. I sat in the chair, my neck stiff, my body shaking in waves I couldn’t stop.Irene’s hand was in mine. Still warm. Not strong. But warm.Ethan hadn’t moved in hours. He was folded forward in that hospital chair like his body was a question with no answer. His beard shadow was thick, his shirt wrinkled so bad it looked like he’d slept on the floor. He hadn’t. He hadn’t slept at all.Irene’s lips parted again. No sound. Just air.I leaned down, my hair falling around his face. “Baby? Say it again. I’m here.”He swallowed, his throat working hard. His lashes fluttered.“…Mom.”The word was softer than a breath, but it cracked something inside me wide open. I kissed his temple, his damp hair, my tears soaking him. “I’m here, baby. Always. Always here.”Ethan’s hand clamped on the rail like he was bracing himself against

  • A Twist of Fate with the Callous Billionaire    Chapter 206 Borrowed Hours

—Sophia’s POVThe morning didn’t come so much as bleed in. Slow. Reluctant. Like it didn’t want to see us. Like even the sun couldn’t stand the weight in this room. The blinds leaked thin strips of light across Irene’s bed. Lines cutting across his face, pale and soft. His lips were parted, skin clammy but not gray. Still pink enough. Still alive enough. My hands hadn’t left him all night. One on his chest, counting, again and again. Rise. Fall. Proof. The other tangled with his fingers, though his grip was loose, almost nothing.Ethan was a wreck beside me. Head tipped against the rail, beard rough against his arm, his hand locked on Irene’s wrist like he was guarding a pulse that could vanish. His shirt was wrinkled, damp. I couldn’t tell if it was sweat or tears. Both. Probably both. The monitor beeped, steady. Not strong. Not weak. Just there. I hated that sound. I loved that sound. Every beat cut me open and stitched me back together in the same second.Irene stirred. Not muc

—Sophia’s POVThe first light hit his face soft. Pale gold through the blinds. Too gentle for what we’d been through. For what was happening in this room.I hated it.And I loved it.Because it showed me his skin was still warm.Irene’s lashes flickered. He didn’t open his eyes. Just small movements. Little reminders that there was still a fight in him, even if it was thin and fragile.Ethan hadn’t slept. I don’t think I had either. But he looked worse. His face gray, hollow, like he’d aged years in a night. His beard was patchy, uneven. His shirt clung to him like it had soaked up sweat and tears both.He leaned forward, elbows digging into his knees, both hands still locked around our son’s. His knuckles white, like if he loosened even a fraction, Irene would slip right out of the world.“You feel that?” Ethan’s voice cracked, almost too low to hear. He glanced at me, wild-eyed, whispering fast. “He’s warmer today. His hand’s warmer.”I reached across, slid my palm against Irene’

—Sophia’s POVThe word sat in the air like it didn’t belong to us.Love.Too fragile. Too heavy. Too much.My lips were still pressed against his hair. Ethan’s hands were still cupping his face like he was holding something that could vanish if he blinked.“…love you.”It replayed in my skull, looping, like I’d imagined it. Like maybe exhaustion had spun sound out of silence. But no. Ethan had heard it too. His whole body was trembling, like the sound itself had torn him apart.I couldn’t stop crying. Couldn’t even breathe right. My chest was raw, my throat scratched open, but none of it mattered because my son had just said it. He remembered. He knew. He loved.Ethan kissed his temple again, over and over, desperate. Whispering fast into his skin. “We love you more. More than anything, champ. Don’t forget it. Don’t ever forget it.” His tears were everywhere, sliding down Irene’s face, down his cheeks, soaking the pillow. And Irene, God, he blinked. Slow. Heavy. But his gaze tilted
