Chapter 1

The Groom Who Never Came

Chapter 1

I stood in my wedding dress while the guests whispered behind me.

My fiancé wasn’t late.

He had run away.

The church was full.

White roses lined the aisle. Soft music floated through the air as sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows, painting colors across the polished floor.

Everything was perfect.

Everything was exactly the way I had imagined it since I was a little girl.

Except for one thing.

The groom was missing.

I stood at the altar, my hands trembling slightly as I held my bouquet. My wedding dress suddenly felt heavier than it had a few minutes ago. The lace sleeves hugged my arms too tightly, and the room felt warmer with every passing second.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

Fifteen.

The whispers had already started.

I could hear them even if people tried to keep their voices low.

“Where’s the groom?”

“Did something happen?”

“Why hasn’t he arrived yet?”

My chest tightened as I glanced at the large wooden doors of the church again.

Any second now, I told myself.

Donn would walk in any second.

He had to.

Today was our wedding day.

Donn Montefalco wouldn’t just disappear.

Right?

My father shifted beside me. I could feel the tension in his posture, though he tried his best to remain calm.

“Maybe there’s traffic,” he murmured quietly.

But his voice didn’t sound convinced.

I swallowed hard.

Donn had always been late for things. It was part of his charm—his careless, easygoing personality.

But today?

Today was different.

Today was the day we were supposed to start the rest of our lives together.

Another ten minutes passed.

The church felt louder now.

Guests were no longer whispering—they were openly talking.

I could feel their eyes on me.

Pity.

Confusion.

Curiosity.

My maid of honor, Clara, stepped closer and leaned toward me.

“Avah… have you heard from him?” she whispered.

I slowly shook my head.

“No.”

Clara frowned, pulling out her phone quickly.

“I’ll call him again.”

She stepped away slightly as she dialed.

I watched her expression carefully.

One ring.

Two rings.

Three.

Then her face fell.

“He’s not answering,” she said softly.

My stomach dropped.

That was strange.

Donn always answered Clara’s calls.

I forced a small smile, trying to calm the growing panic inside me.

“Maybe he’s on the way,” I said, though my voice sounded weaker than I wanted.

The wedding coordinator approached us, her polite smile looking more strained than before.

“Miss Alfonso… should we delay the ceremony a little longer?” she asked gently.

Before I could answer, another voice spoke from behind us.

“Avah.”

I turned.

Donn’s best man, Luis, stood there. But instead of the confident smile he usually wore, his face looked pale.

Uneasy.

My heart began to pound.

“Luis?” I asked. “Have you talked to Donn?”

For a moment, he didn’t answer.

His eyes shifted toward the floor.

That was when fear truly started to crawl through my chest.

“Luis,” I repeated, my voice tightening.

He finally looked up.

“I… I can’t reach him.”

The words landed like a stone in my stomach.

“What do you mean you can’t reach him?” Clara asked quickly.

Luis rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

“He left the house early this morning,” he said. “But when I tried calling him on the way here… his phone was already off.”

Silence fell between us.

My heartbeat echoed loudly in my ears.

That didn’t make sense.

None of it did.

Donn would never turn off his phone on our wedding day.

Never.

Right?

I suddenly felt dizzy.

The walls of the church seemed to close in around me.

My father gently placed a hand on my arm.

“Avah,” he said carefully. “Maybe we should step outside for a moment.”

But I couldn’t move.

Because something inside me already knew.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Minutes passed again.

More whispers spread through the church.

Some guests had already begun to stand up.

Others looked at me with sympathy that burned worse than any insult.

Then the wedding coordinator slowly approached again.

Her voice was softer this time.

“Miss Alfonso… perhaps we should consider rescheduling the ceremony.”

Rescheduling.

The word stabbed into my chest.

Rescheduling meant one thing.

The groom wasn’t coming.

My fingers tightened around the bouquet until the stems nearly snapped.

No.

That couldn’t be true.

Donn loved me.

He had proposed to me himself.

He had promised.

“I’ll be there,” he told me the night before the wedding. “Nothing could stop me from marrying you.”

So where was he?

Why wasn’t he here?

Suddenly Clara gasped beside me.

“Avah…”

Her voice sounded strange.

Slowly, I turned toward her.

She was staring at her phone.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“What is it?” I asked.

She hesitated before slowly turning the phone toward me.

On the screen was a message.

A short message.

From Donn.

My hands began to shake as I read the words.

I’m sorry.

I can’t do this.

That was it.

No explanation.

No reason.

Just two sentences.

The church blurred in front of my eyes.

The whispers.

The music.

The hundreds of guests watching me.

Everything suddenly felt distant.

Like I was standing outside my own body.

He wasn’t coming.

Donn Montefalco had left me.

On my wedding day.

In front of everyone.

I didn’t remember dropping the bouquet.

I didn’t remember taking off the ring.

But I did remember one thing very clearly.

The moment the truth finally settled in my chest.

The man I loved had disappeared without a goodbye.

And I had just become the woman who was left at the altar.

I didn’t know it yet.

But that humiliation was only the beginning.

Because years later, when I finally tried to rebuild my life…

I would walk into an office and come face to face with the one man who might hate me even more than Donn did.

Sebastian Montefalco.

My new boss.

And the older brother of the man who ruined my life.
