Dante stood in Alessia’s ruined bedroom with another man’s blood drying across his hands.

One attacker had escaped. Two were dead. A fourth lay downstairs with a bullet in his thigh and Moretti soldiers surrounding him.

The prisoner had lasted seven minutes.

Longer than most.

“Russian weapons,” Enzo said. “Unregistered vehicles. The survivor claims Sokolov hired them.”

“He’s lying.”

“Why?”

Dante crouched beside the shattered balcony door and lifted a security card from beneath the glass.

Romano clearance.

“Someone let them inside.”

Enzo accepted the card. “Luca?”

“He needs the marriage too badly.”

“Then one of his men.”

Dante remembered Matteo’s hand around Alessia’s wrist and the unfinished warning about Gabriel’s death.

“DeLuca.”

Enzo nodded. “He disappeared during the attack.”

Dante rose. Blood soaked the shirt beneath his jacket where a bullet had grazed his ribs. The wound meant nothing compared with the absence of Alessia’s body beneath his.

He had held her.

Someone had taken her.

“Close every port, airfield and railway station,” he ordered. “Nobody leaves the city.”

“That could start a war.”

“The war began when they touched her.”

Viktor Sokolov arrived in Alessia’s basement prison shortly after the second recording attempt.

His silver hair and immaculate grey suit made him look more like a statesman than a criminal. Everyone in the room became still when he entered.

He examined Alessia’s bruised face.

“I specifically instructed you not to mark her.”

“She wouldn’t cooperate,” the largest captor replied.

Viktor accepted the man’s knife and drove it through his hand into the table.

The scream filled the basement.

“When I give an instruction,” Viktor said calmly, “I expect it to be followed.”

After the injured man was removed, Viktor sat opposite Alessia.

“I apologise for the discourtesy.”

“You’ll forgive me if I don’t accept.”

“You have your mother’s spirit.”

Alessia’s blood cooled. “You knew her?”

“Everyone knew Sofia Romano.”

“What do you want?”

“Dante possesses evidence capable of destroying every powerful family in this city—including mine.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Your mother kept financial records for the Romanos. After she died, Gabriel discovered them.”

“And Dante killed him.”

“Is that what Luca told you?”

Alessia said nothing.

“Dante met Gabriel on the night of his death,” Viktor continued, “but your brother left that meeting alive.”

“You’re lying.”

“Ask Matteo who followed him.”

Rage surged through Alessia.

“Where are the records?”

“Dante concealed them.”

“Then why kidnap me?”

Viktor leaned forward. “Because Dante Moretti has watched you for four years.”

“He doesn’t care about me.”

“You truly don’t know.”

An explosion shook dust from the ceiling.

Gunfire erupted above them.

Men shouted in Russian, and boots thundered across the floor.

Viktor drew a pistol.

The basement door opened and Matteo stumbled inside.

“Moretti.”

The gunfire moved closer.

Then silence.

The handle slowly turned.

Dante entered alone.

Blood streaked his face. His sleeves had been rolled to his elbows, revealing scarred forearms. He held a pistol at his side.

His eyes found Alessia.

The murderous cold in his expression broke for one instant.

Viktor seized her chair and pressed his gun against her temple.

“If you pull that trigger,” Dante said, “you’ll be dead before she reaches the floor.”

“Put down your weapon.”

Dante obeyed.

Alessia stared at him. “What are you doing?”

“Taking you home.”

“I’m not worth your life.”

“That isn’t your decision.”

Matteo moved behind Dante and placed a pistol against his spine.

Viktor smiled. “The great Moretti brought to his knees by a woman.”

“I know the safety on your gun is engaged, Matteo,” Alessia said.

Dante dropped.

Matteo pulled the trigger.

Nothing happened.

Dante spun, seized the weapon and drove Matteo to the floor. Alessia threw her weight sideways, knocking Viktor’s pistol away.

Moretti soldiers stormed the room.

Within seconds, it was over.

Dante cut Alessia’s restraints and examined her injuries. His thumb brushed her swollen cheek.

“Who did this?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

He lifted her into his arms.

“I can walk.”

“I know.”

“Then put me down.”

“No.”

As Dante carried her upstairs, Alessia looked back at Matteo.

The man she had trusted had delivered her to Viktor.

The monster she had hated had surrendered his weapon to save her.

For the first time, she wondered whether she had chosen the wrong enemy.

Smoke filled the orphanage corridor. Dante wrapped his jacket around Alessia’s shoulders and covered her mouth with the collar. “There must be another exit,” he told Salvatore. “The eastern dormitory has a loading door.” They moved through the hallway as flames consumed the children’s drawings. Burning pieces of ceiling collapsed around them. A beam fell behind Isabella, separating her from the others. “Mother!” Dante turned back. “I’m fine,” she shouted through the fire. “Keep Alessia moving.” Salvatore seized a metal chair and struck the burning timber until it shifted. Isabella crawled through the opening. For one brief moment, their eyes met. The man she had betrayed had just saved her life. They continued into the eastern dormitory. The loading door had been chained from outside. Dante fired the guard’s stolen weapon into the lock. The bullet ricocheted, forcing everyone back. “Stand aside,” Salvatore said. He removed a wooden panel near the floor, exposing the cha

Flames climbed the cathedral walls. Dante fired towards the gallery while Salvatore dragged aside the carpet beneath the altar. A rusted iron ring appeared in the stone floor. “Help me,” Salvatore ordered. Dante ignored him until Alessia joined the effort. Together, they lifted the heavy panel and revealed a narrow staircase. Smoke rolled across the ceiling. “Isabella first,” Alessia said. “No,” Isabella replied. “You’re pregnant.” “This isn’t the time.” “It’s precisely the time.” Dante lifted Alessia into his arms. She stared at him. “Put me down.” “No.” “The staircase is narrow.” “Then arguing wastes oxygen.” He carried her below while Isabella and Salvatore followed. The stone panel closed above them, leaving the passage in darkness. Dante produced a small torch. “You surrendered all your weapons,” Alessia said. “A torch isn’t a weapon.” “In your hands, anything could be.” Salvatore moved past them. “This way.” The tunnel smelled of wet soil and smoke. It extend

The Cathedral of Saint Michael had been abandoned for twenty years. Its bell tower leaned towards the adjoining buildings, and dark vines covered the weathered stone. Most of the stained-glass windows had been broken, leaving empty frames like sightless eyes. Alessia arrived at eleven fifty-five with Dante and Isabella. Gabriel, Caterina and Enzo waited in nearby buildings along with federal officers Evelyn Price had provided. Dante had objected to involving authorities until Alessia reminded him that he no longer commanded an illegal army. He had disliked the reminder. The cathedral doors opened before them. A young man in a black suit waited inside. The serpent-and-cross symbol was tattooed across his hand. “No weapons,” he said. Dante’s expression was almost amused. “Then your employer should have invited different people.” The man searched Isabella first. He recovered a pistol and two knives. Alessia surrendered her weapon but kept a thin blade sewn into her coat. The

Alessia stared at Isabella. For several seconds, the words carried no meaning. “Luca is my father.” “No,” Isabella said. “He raised you.” “That is not what I said.” Dante reached for Alessia, but she stepped away. She needed space from every person who had ever claimed secrecy was protection. “Tell me everything.” Isabella looked towards the guards surrounding them. “Not here.” “You don’t get to decide where.” Alessia entered the house without waiting. The family followed her into Dante’s war room. Enzo locked the door while Gabriel placed the photograph on the table. Isabella remained standing. “Sofia met Salvatore before she married Luca,” she began. “They loved one another, but your grandfather forbade the relationship. He had already arranged Sofia’s marriage to Luca as part of an alliance.” “Another arranged marriage,” Alessia said bitterly. “Yes.” “And Sofia was pregnant?” “Not when she married Luca. You were born years later.” Alessia folded her arms. “Then ho

Gunfire struck the western wall. Dante led Alessia across the lawn while Moretti guards fired from behind stone barriers. Emergency lights swept over the estate, illuminating masked attackers advancing through the gardens. Each wore the serpent-and-cross symbol. “Three near the fountain,” Enzo said through the radio. “Two moving towards the chapel.” “They want the cemetery entrance,” Alessia replied. Dante looked at her. “The package.” “It wasn’t only a threat. It marked their entry point.” He ordered additional guards towards the cemetery. An attacker emerged between the hedges. Dante fired first. The man collapsed, but another appeared behind him and aimed at Alessia. She dropped behind a stone planter and returned fire. Her bullet struck his leg. Dante crossed the distance and knocked the weapon from his hand. “Who sent you?” he demanded. The attacker smiled through blood. “The true Romano.” A sharp crack sounded from beyond the wall. The attacker’s head snapped back

Dante Moretti had faced bullets without flinching. He had surrendered to federal officers, entered court without knowing whether he would return home and placed his life in the hands of enemies who wanted him buried. Nothing frightened him like the thought of becoming a father. Alessia watched the realisation move across his face as his palm rested against her stomach. She was only six weeks pregnant. There was no visible change, no movement for him to feel, yet Dante stared at the place beneath his hand as though the entire world had shifted. “Say something,” she whispered. His eyes lifted to hers. “Are you certain?” “I took three tests.” “You should see a doctor.” “I have an appointment tomorrow.” “I’m coming.” “That sounded like an order.” “It was panic expressed with confidence.” Alessia smiled. “You’re learning.” The balcony doors remained open behind them. Music and laughter drifted from downstairs, where their families were still celebrating Gabriel and Caterina’s
