Dante’s estate stood beyond the northern edge of the city, surrounded by stone walls, security cameras and enough armed men to defend a small country.

Alessia woke in a bedroom larger than her father’s study.

Charcoal linen covered the bed, and flames moved behind the glass of a modern fireplace. Someone had cleaned the blood from her skin, treated her bruises and dressed her in a black silk nightgown.

She sat upright.

Pain travelled through her ribs.

“You have extensive bruising, but nothing is broken.”

Dante occupied an armchair beside the window.

He had changed into a black shirt, though several buttons remained undone. A white bandage wrapped his ribs where the bullet had grazed him.

“You were shot,” she said.

“Grazed.”

“And you sat there all night?”

“Yes.”

“Watching me?”

“Yes.”

“That’s unsettling.”

“I’ve been called worse.”

Alessia pushed away the blankets. “Where are my clothes?”

“Destroyed.”

“Find me something else. I’m going home.”

“No.”

She looked at him. “Excuse me?”

Dante rose. “You were kidnapped from your father’s house using Romano security clearance. Until I identify everyone involved, you remain here.”

“You rescued me from one prison and brought me to another.”

“If you were my prisoner, the door would be locked.”

Alessia crossed the room and tried it.

The door opened.

Two armed guards stood in the hallway.

She closed it again.

Dante’s mouth twitched. “Satisfied?”

“Not remotely.”

A tray waited beside the bed with water, medication and fruit. Alessia swallowed two tablets before facing him again.

“What happened to Viktor?”

“He escaped during the transfer.”

“And Matteo?”

“In my cellar.”

“Have you tortured him?”

“Not yet.”

“He knows what happened to Gabriel.”

“So do I.”

The glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

Dante walked towards the fireplace, giving her his back.

“Gabriel contacted me five weeks before his death. He discovered your father was laundering money through companies controlled by Viktor Sokolov.”

“My father and Viktor were enemies.”

“In public.”

“What did Gabriel want from you?”

“Protection for you.”

The glass trembled in her hand.

“Why?”

“Because he intended to expose them.”

Alessia placed the glass down. “You killed him for the records.”

“No.”

“You met him that night.”

“He left our meeting alive.”

“Then who shot him?”

Dante turned.

“Matteo.”

The name struck like a blade.

“No.”

“Your father ordered it.”

Alessia crossed the room and slapped Dante.

The sound cracked through the bedroom.

His head turned with the blow.

The guards opened the door, weapons drawn.

“Out,” Dante ordered.

They immediately withdrew.

Alessia’s hand shook. “Don’t speak about my father as though you know him.”

“I know exactly who Luca Romano is.”

“You expect me to believe he murdered his son?”

“I expect you to examine the evidence.”

Dante removed an envelope from a nearby drawer. It contained bank transfers, surveillance photographs and several pages covered in Gabriel’s unmistakable handwriting.

Alessia read one sentence twice.

If anything happens to me, Luca knows.

Her knees weakened.

Dante caught her before she fell.

“Let go.”

He released her but remained close.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Would you have believed me?”

“No.”

“That’s why.”

“You let me hate you.”

“Your hatred protected you. As long as Luca believed you blamed the Morettis, he had no reason to consider you dangerous.”

Alessia pressed one hand to her mouth.

Every family dinner and comforting embrace became another possible lie.

“Why did Gabriel trust you?”

“He was my friend.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Our families weren’t always at war.”

She remembered Gabriel disappearing without explanation and the Moretti matchbook she once found inside his coat.

“He asked me to keep you safe,” Dante continued. “Marriage was the only permanent way to remove you from Luca’s control.”

“So this arrangement is merely protection?”

“No.”

The single word changed the air.

Dante approached and brushed his knuckles against her cheek.

“I chose you because I haven’t stopped thinking about you since the cemetery.”

“That sounds like obsession.”

“It is.”

“You don’t know me.”

“I know you read when you can’t sleep. You hate white roses because they were arranged at your mother’s funeral. You drink wine with your family but prefer whisky when you’re alone.”

“You had me followed.”

“I kept you alive.”

“You invaded my privacy.”

“Yes.”

“You’re not sorry.”

“No.”

Alessia should have struck him again.

Instead, she became aware of how little space remained between them.

“What happens now?”

“We marry in ten days.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Your father may attempt to silence you once he knows you’ve seen Gabriel’s evidence. As my wife, you’ll have my protection.”

“There must be another way.”

“There are several.”

“Choose one.”

“I don’t want another way.”

His honesty was more dangerous than manipulation.

“I won’t be owned,” she said.

Dante’s hand settled lightly against her neck.

“Then stand beside me. Keep your name, your money and every weapon you can hide. Challenge me whenever you believe I’m wrong.”

His thumb rested over her racing pulse.

“But when someone comes for you, they answer to me.”

Luca Romano sat behind reinforced glass inside Dante’s estate. His injured leg had been treated, and someone had provided clean clothes. Even imprisoned, he carried himself like a patriarch holding court. Alessia entered with Dante beside her. Luca noticed their joined hands. “So the performance became real.” Alessia released Dante—not because of her father’s observation, but because she wanted both hands free. “Did you kill my mother?” Luca’s faint smile disappeared. He looked at Dante. “Is that what he told you?” “Hale told me.” “And you believe a corrupt coward?” “I believe you’re capable of murdering your own children.” “You know nothing about Sofia.” “Then tell me.” Luca leaned back. “Your mother intended to destroy this family.” “She wanted to leave you.” “She was confused by her treatment.” “She wanted to take me with her.” “You were my daughter.” “I was hers too.” Luca’s expression hardened. “She planned to give the ledger to federal investigators. Jonathan Hale agreed to speak only with Alessia. He sat handcuffed to a hospital bed, one leg suspended in a metal frame. Two federal officers waited outside while Dante watched through reinforced glass. Hale appeared older without authority surrounding him. “You look well for a widow,” he said. “My husband is behind that glass.” “Yes. He appears unhappy.” “He usually does.” Hale studied her. “You released the footage.” “Matteo did.” “Then his death was unfortunate.” Alessia gave him no reaction. “What do you know about Viktor?” “He’s leaving the country tonight.” “From where?” “A private airfield north of the city.” “Why should I believe you?” “Viktor possesses the final unencrypted section of Sofia’s records. They contain more than financial transactions.” “What else?” “Recordings—including one concerning your mother.” Alessia’s heartbeat changed. “My mother died from cancer.” “Your mother was recovering.” The room seemed to shift. “What are you saying?” “Her

Gabriel was found six hours later. A collapsed service shaft had protected him and Jonathan Hale from the worst of the explosion. Enzo’s men reached them shortly before dawn. Hale was unconscious with a fractured leg. Gabriel had used his body to shield the man who had tried to kill them. When Alessia arrived at the hospital, her brother was sitting upright while a doctor stitched a wound across his forearm. She stopped in the doorway. Gabriel smiled. “You look disappointed.” Alessia crossed the room and struck his uninjured shoulder. He winced. “There she is.” Then she threw her arms around him. “You cannot keep returning from the dead. It’s becoming emotionally exhausting.” “I’ll try to be more considerate.” Dante spoke with Enzo near the window. Hale had been placed under guard in another wing, surrounded by federal officers from outside his network. Matteo’s delivery had worked. Evelyn Price released the body-camera recording across every major news platform. By morn

The courthouse collapsed seconds after Dante carried Alessia outside. He forced her behind an armoured vehicle as stone and glass rained across the street. Dust swallowed the building, turning midnight into suffocating grey. Alessia twisted free. “Gabriel!” She ran towards the wreckage. Dante caught her around the waist and pulled her back. “Let me go!” “The building is still collapsing.” “My brother is inside!” “And running into the fire won’t save him.” She struck his chest with both hands. “You promised we would reach him.” “We will.” “You don’t know that.” Dante held her face between his hands. “No. But I’ll tear those ruins apart stone by stone before I abandon him.” His certainty penetrated her panic. Enzo arrived with the remaining Moretti soldiers. Blood ran from a cut above his eye. “Emergency crews are coming,” he said. “Hale’s men have blocked the eastern streets.” “They don’t want anyone found alive,” Dante replied. Viktor emerged from the smoke with two

  • A Vow Written in Blood    17. The Courthouse

The city courthouse had been abandoned after a fire fifteen years earlier. Its stone walls remained blackened, and most of the windows were boarded over. The scales of justice hung crooked above the entrance. Alessia arrived beside Dante. Gabriel had insisted on accompanying them. Caterina remained close to him, carrying enough weapons beneath her coat to start a small war. Enzo waited inside a neighbouring building with Moretti soldiers positioned throughout the surrounding streets. Viktor stood inside the ruined courtroom. He had brought only four men. “You were instructed to exchange Gabriel,” he said. Dante stepped slightly in front of Alessia. “You don’t issue instructions to me.” Viktor looked at Gabriel. “You possess the second encryption key.” “And you possess the ledger,” Gabriel replied. “A copy. The original was taken from the warehouse.” “I released it,” Caterina said. Everyone looked at her. She smiled coldly. “Did you believe I protected Gabri

Matteo laughed when Alessia explained the plan. He sat behind reinforced glass in a secure interview room. His wrists were chained to the steel table, and two guards stood behind him. “You want me to save the Moretti family?” “I’m offering you a chance to save what remains of yourself.” “You’ll never trust me again.” “No.” “Then why give me the only evidence capable of destroying Hale?” “Because Viktor no longer needs you, my father will kill you to protect himself, and Dante intends to keep you inside this room until you die.” Matteo glanced towards the observation window. Dante stood on the other side. Alessia couldn’t see him through the darkened glass, but she felt him watching. “What do I receive?” Matteo asked. “Freedom.” “Dante agreed?” “He will.” “You sound certain.” “He promised not to treat me as property. He said nothing about his prisoners.” Matteo almost smiled. “You’ve changed.” “I know the truth now.” “And you love him.” Alessia i
