Jafer's POV

I watched her turn to me, confusion and shock clouding her face. I reached into my pocket, pulled out the marriage certificate, and handed it to her along with a pen.

She stared down at the paper in her hands and the pen resting on top of it, then back up at me.

“What? I mean, why?" the words sounded as if they had been dragged out of her.

I stood beside the bed. "I gave your father a chance to save your life. He chose the ledger instead."

I watched her expression change.

"Since he has made his decision, I have to make mine. I need a way into a Circle and your family name can get me closer than a dozen men with guns ever could. So, Nadya Kuzmin, since your family has decided you are worth less than a book, you will become my wife. And in return for the life I spared, you will help me get what I want.”

I explained it as quickly as I could, but it still did not help. Her eyes only grew wider. Then she shook her head, her tangled curls moving against the pillow.

“I-I don't think… my grandfather is already dead. He..."

"How about I just kill you?" I cut her off mostly to make her stop talking.

I needed her signature on that paper as soon as possible so I could return to my revenge, and every minute I spent standing in a hospital room was a minute wasted.

Her face changed.

"I was not expecting to open my eyes after I passed out. I was disappointed to see that I am still alive." she said plainly without a tremor, and I could not believe what I had just heard.

"You want to die?" I stared at her.

She lifted her eyes to mine. "Is that not what you wanted?"

"I wanted that ledger." I emphasized. "Now that I see your father is going to be a pain in the ass, killing you will not make him cough up what I need. So I have to find another route."

I watched the words land.

Her eyes began to fill and the tears gathered along the rims until they were ready to fall. My jaw tightened and my patience went thin. Why does she cry every time?

She looked down at her hands. "I-I cannot just sign my name to being married to you when..."

"You have two choices." I did not raise my voice. "Die for a family that does not give a damn about you, or marry me and become the wife of the Mafia King of Russia, powerful enough to fight them.”

"Fight my family?" Her head came up as if that was the only thing she heard from what I said. "They may have rejected me, but I will not..."

"Now, you listen to me, little doctor." I leaned in and held her jaw, turning her face so that she could not look anywhere but at me.

"Your family wanted you dead. You'll make them wish they had. An eye for an eye. A tooth, for another. A taste of their own poison. Got it?”

She bit down on her lip and her fist tightened in the bedspread, knuckles pale against the white sheet. My eyes followed the movement of her mouth before they settled on her blue eyes.

"Please," she whispered. "I want to think about it.”

How cocky. She was lying in a hospital bed I paid for and she was demanding that I wait.

A smirk pulled at my mouth.

I let go of her jaw and my thumb brushed the side of her face before I could think about it. She looked thin. Her curly hair was a mess of tangles, and her skin had a gray cast to it.

"Whatever. The wedding is tomorrow. One of my men will bring you to my house so you can prepare."

Her eyes widened at that. "Wait, tomorrow? No, you cannot do this. I do not..."

"I can. And I already did."

I set the marriage certificate on the table beside her bed and stepped back.

This had to work.

Her father was still a made man, even if he no longer held a seat in the Golden Circle. His family had a representative inside the organization, and that was my way in.

The representative stood between me and the people I had spent fifteen years hunting. As long as he remained in place, every move I make and every question I asked would reach the wrong ears.

His death would change that.

As Nadya's husband, the organization would be forced to make me the new representative while I get a window to represent my family as well.

I walked out of the room without saying anything else. In the corridor, I took out my phone and dialed Aleks, my right-hand man. He picked up on the second ring.

"I am heading to the quarters. Come with me, and have someone take care of my office work. I need to announce my wedding.”

I ended the call and marched toward my car.

Later that day, I was taken to his house and this time I was shown to a bigger bedroom. The guard told me it was mine. I nodded, and as he turned to leave, I called him back. I could not have said why. Maybe it was because I was about to be shut inside a house full of strangers, and I wanted at least to know someone."What is your name, please?"He looked at me for a second as if the question made no sense. "Viktor.""Thank you, Viktor."He gave me a short, stiff nod and walked away. His footsteps faded down the hallway, and the quiet that came after was so heavy that I felt it press on my ears.I stepped inside and let my eyes travel around the room. It was wide and clean, with a curved sitting area tucked into one corner and a large TV mounted on the wall. A floor-to-ceiling window ran along one side, and when I walked up to it, it looked out on the garage. I pressed my fingertips to the cold glass and stood there for a moment, my eyes moving from one car to another. Finally, I wen

"Do not move, Naddy. Let me see it."Fillip crouched in front of me on the garden path, and I held my leg out stiffly, my lip trembling. The scrape ran from my knee halfway down my shin, red and angry, with tiny pieces of gravel stuck in it."It hurts," I whimpered."I know. I know it does. Stay still. I am almost done.” He pulled a clean handkerchief from his pocket and dabbed at the edge of the scrape so carefully that it hardly touched me.I sniffled hard, and a tear rolled off my chin and landed on my knee. "I am sorry."His hands paused as he looked up. "For what?""You told me not to climb it." My voice broke, and I wiped my nose with the back of my hand. "You said the branch was too thin, and I did not listen. I wanted to see the birds' nest, and now I am hurt, and you are cleaning my leg instead of playing. It is my fault.""Naddy, look at me."I did not want to. I kept staring at the gravel until his fingers tipped my chin up, and then I had no choice. His eyes were shining,

"Miss Nadya, your parents are not here. They went to the hospital,” the security man said when I stepped back into the house. "The hospital?" My voice came out thin. "All of them?" "Yes, Miss. They left a while ago." I did not ask him anything else aside from some cash. After handing me some, I turned around and walked back out the front door, and flagged down a taxi to the hospital. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my ears. The tears had started on their own, and they would not stop. I pressed my sleeve against my face the whole ride and could not explain to myself why I was so sure they would be furious with me. I had not done anything. But my hands would not stop shaking, and my stomach kept tightening as if it already knew. When I reached the hospital hallway and saw them, Katya was the first to move. Her palm struck my cheek before I could say a word. The crack of it rang down the corridor, and my head snapped to the side. Her eyes were red and swollen, sign

Jafer's POV "Please." The man's voice broke on the word. "Please, I told you, I do not know anything."I turned the knife in my fingers so the light slid down the blade. "I will not ask again.”He shook his head hard, and sweat dripped from his chin onto his shirt. "Please, I cannot. I say them, they will find me. They will find my family.""They are not in this room." I stepped closer. "I am."His eyes followed the blade and would not leave it. His lips were trembling, and his breath came in short, wet bursts. "Names," I demanded."I... I do not..."I drove the knife through the back of his left hand and into the wooden arm of the chair. His wail filled the basement and went on far longer, much to my delight. He bucked against the ropes, his whole body shaking, tears running down his face and mixing with the blood on his chin."Names," I said again, in exactly the same voice."I do not know all of them! I swear to God, I do not!""Then give me the ones you know." I gripped the han

Katya was right. I was bad luck. The irony was almost funny. I had escaped one prison only to land in another, and this time my life was on the line. They had thrown me into a room that was more of a bedroom, though there was nothing in it except a large bed and a set of empty drawers. I screamed and begged to be let out until my voice cracked and exhaustion finally claimed me.The pills I had swallowed at the Penitentiary finally took over, and I fell asleep. But my mind was far too disturbed to rest, and my sleep was restless and full of nightmares.I woke up to the sound of a voice in the room."What an impressive talent to be dragged out of her home at gunpoint and still sleep for six hours.”I opened my eyes, but everything in front of me was a gray blur. My head felt foggy, and my limbs were heavy, and for a moment I could not tell where I was. Then my disturbed mind caught up, and it registered one thing at once: there was someone in the room.I scrambled upright and tried to r
