Chapter 3

Autor: Miles Farrow
The sergeant pushed open the door and stepped inside.

“Captain, headquarters just issued a set of the latest high-grade explosive ordnance disposal suits. There’s only one set—how do you want to allocate it?”

Robert instinctively glanced at me, his lips twitching slightly.

I cut in before he could speak, two voices ringing out in the office simultaneously.

“Give it to Vivian.”

The sergeant froze, and a flash of clear embarrassment crossed Robert’s face.

Clearing his throat, he tried to cover it up:

“That’s right. Vivian is new, and her physical stamina and psychological resilience lag behind. Good gear can save a life.”

The sergeant hesitated:

“But Emily takes on almost all of the most dangerous missions. Don’t you think—”

Before he could finish, Robert cut him off.

“It’s fine. Emily is a veteran with a high stress tolerance. She can manage just fine with the old gear.”

At that, the sergeant simply nodded before stepping out.

The moment the door shut, the pressure inside the room plummeted.

Robert pressed his lips together and looked at me, seemingly wanting to say something to diffuse the tension.

The corners of my mouth twitched into a self-deprecating smile.

“No need to explain. I understand. Leave the best gear for the rookie, show how selfless our captain is—and to avoid gossip, of course.”

Robert’s brows furrowed tightly. He strode over, placed a hand on my shoulder, and softened his tone.

“Emily, you’ve just been working around the clock lately and taking on too much stress.

“How about this? For this afternoon’s routine psych evaluation, I’ll cancel my schedule and accompany you myself.”

Because bomb technicians operate under constant high pressure, psychological evaluations after major operations were standard procedure.

That afternoon, I changed into loose, comfortable clothes and walked toward the evaluation room alone.

Just outside the door, I caught Vivian’s sweet, delicate voice floating out from inside.

“Captain, this amulet ring on the inside of your jacket looks so unique.

“I’ve been seeing bomb countdowns every time I close my eyes of late. Could you give it to me to calm my nerves?”

I held my breath involuntarily, waiting for Robert’s reply.

The very next second, the crisp sound of scissors cutting fabric echoed from within.

“Here, take it. Next time you have a nightmare, call me. No matter how late, I’ll answer.”

A memory flashed violently in my mind—my first mission with Robert.

Having barely escaped death, I clung to him in horror, unable to calm my racing heart for a long while.

He had pushed me away without a second thought.

“What was that for? What if someone sees us? Emily, you’re being far too fragile.”

Holding back my tears, I shoved the door open.

Vivian was playing with the amulet my father had given Robert.

Catching the look on my face, Robert instinctively stepped sideways, shielding Vivian behind his body.

“Emily, why didn’t you knock before coming in?”

His protective stance cut straight to my core, shattering my restraint as tears streamed down my face.

“That’s the only thing I have left of my father! What right do you have to give it away?”

Seeing me out of control, Robert stepped forward and snapped in a hushed, furious voice:

“Are you crazy? It’s just a ring! I’ll buy you a bunch if you wish!

“Stop making a scene! Do you want the entire squad rushing over to watch this circus and discover our relationship?”

The wound on my wrist throbbed with excruciating pain under his grip, yet it paled in comparison to the agony ripping through my chest.

At his glare, I finally snapped.

Prying his fingers off me one by one, I spoke with absolute calm:

“I’m done having anything to do with you. Now give me back my father’s ring.”

Staring at the dead silence in my eyes, Robert froze.

The very next instant, a red alert siren blared throughout the hallway.

I had assumed Robert’s parting words were nothing more than a momentary flash of frustration, but he rented a small mud-brick house near our base to settle down.He cut off his ragged, long hair and went running every morning, trying desperately to regain the peak physique he once possessed. He kept himself immaculately clean and brought food containers to the base gates three times a day, rain or shine. As time passed, his face grew familiar around the perimeter, and his confidence swelled.Sometimes when he would catch a logistic staff member, pleading with an obsessive persistence:“This is for my girlfriend, Emily Stone. She works too hard and forgets her meals all the time. Please bring it to her, and tell her I’ll keep waiting.”His belated devotion didn’t move me in the slightest. Instead, it left me disgusted and irritated beyond measure.I issued strict orders to the gate guards, forbidding him from ever stepping within fifty feet of the entrance.Nothing he brought was to be

At the commendation ceremony the following day, Ethan personally pinned the Special Merit Medal upon my chest.Taking half a step back, his eyes shone with admiration.“Congratulations, you earned this. Your wish came true.”Lowering my head, I gently caressed the medal on my chest, a warm moisture welling in my eyes.Dad, I did it.This wasn’t given as charity by anyone, nor obtained by any dubious means.I fought for it, fair and square, risking my own life to earn it.Beyond my expectations, after the news coverage of the ceremony aired nationwide, Robert somehow managed to track me down. That day, as I walked toward the headquarters, a disheveled, haggard figure suddenly burst out from a corner, blocking my path.“Emily!”After a year apart, Robert had lost every trace of his former polished, handsome appearance.Bloodshot veins spiderwebbed through his eyes, his frame was emaciated, and his voice sounded raspy and unrecognizable.Seeing me standing before him in the flesh, the mus

Robert froze, bending down to pick up the band.It was a plain silver ring. The band was unrefined, clearly crafted and polished by hand.On the inside was an engraving in small characters:R&E.Robert and Emily.Robert stared dead at the ring in his palm, every last drop of blood in his veins freezing in that instant. He remembered now. How a while ago, my hands had been constantly wrapped in bandages. When he asked back then, I had claimed I’d cut myself during training. It turned out I had been secretly preparing a marriage proposal all along. With meticulous care, I had engraved my devotion and hope into the keepsake ring my father had left him.If he had cherished it even a tiny fraction, he would have discovered this.Shutting his eyes in agony, Robert remained kneeling before the wreckage, slamming his head against the ground in a self-punishing frenzy, letting blood stream across his face.Following the explosion that shook the entire city, he lay unconscious in the hospital fo

Looking at Robert’s blood-drenched hands, Vivian burst into tears of pure terror, stepping forward in an attempt to pull at his arm.“Your hands are bleeding—does it hurt? Please don’t be like this. Emily wouldn’t want to see you hurting yourself…”At the sound of her voice, Robert’s frame stiffened. He turned his head around by inches, his gaze locking dead onto the new blast suit Vivian was wearing. If only it had been me who was wearing it.If only he hadn’t played favorites earlier and had allocated the suit fairly. If only he hadn’t insisted on avoiding gossip.“Get lost.”Robert turned his head back, his voice low.Failing to catch his words, Vivian tried to step even closer, determined to display her empathetic nature.“There are ambulances outside. Let me help you dress your wounds—”“I said get the hell away from me!”Robert violently slapped her hand away, bursting into a ferocious roar that sent a shockwave of terror through everyone present.“Don’t touch me!”He pointed a t

Under the sheer force of the bomb, the high-rise shopping mall collapsed in an instant.Rolling clouds of dark smoke mixed with concrete dust filled the air.Robert stared at the scene in absolute paralysis, his mind a complete blank.I was still inside. Two seconds later, a blood-curdling scream erupted from his throat:“Emily!”Robert scrambled off the ground, using every last ounce of his strength to shove past the SWAT officers setting up the perimeter tape, and lunged headlong into the rubble where loose stones were still falling.“Watch out! Secondary collapses could happen at any moment—you can’t go in!”Two SWAT officers acted fast, tackling him around the waist and pulling him back with everything they had.“Get off me! Get the hell off me!”Robert’s eyes turned blood-red as he swung a fist into one of the men holding him, displaying terrifying strength.Breaking free by force, he stumbled and clawed his way toward the location where the first-floor atrium used to be.The once

“Emergency deployment! Dual-bomb crisis at the downtown Meridian Center! Assemble immediately!”Without giving Robert another glance, I turned on my heel and charged into the gear room.As I pulled on my blast suit, I caught Vivian out of the corner of my eye stepping into the newly issued top-grade gear. That suit was not only lightweight, but also lined with premium shock-absorption materials. My old suit, however, was heavy, stifling, and the comms inside the helmet hummed with frequent, ear-splitting static.I pulled my gaze away, silently grabbed my equipment kit, and was the first to sprint onto the truck. The floor plans sent from command center revealed two active bombs. One was structurally complex, strapped to the main pillar in the first-floor atrium. The other was simple, placed in the wide-open underground parking garage.Robert stared at the schematics, issuing orders without a second of hesitation:“Vivian, I’m heading to the garage with you. Handle this well, and I’ll p
