"I can't believe you came home in this state! You're insane, Nina, you're going to get yourself killed." I glanced over at Katy, trying not to wince as I shifted upright. "If you're done with the lecture, could you help me up?" She rolled her brilliant blue eyes but stepped forward, bracing an arm around me as I eased out of bed. "For the record, I'm not supporting this. Does your chief even know you checked yourself out after one day?" "I couldn't stay there." I hissed as pain shot through my side. "Whoever tried to kill me walked into my hospital room and left those flowers. They could've come back to finish the job." Katy froze, eyes wide. "Wait... whoever? As in, Rafael Santiago is no longer your prime suspect?" I sank onto the couch with a sigh. "I don't know anymore. It's all too convenient. He just happens to be at the restaurant when the gang attacks at the docks, and then magically shows up to rush me to the hospital. Plus, how was he in my hospital room when someone slipped in and left that bouquet?" Katy joined me, running a hand through her short blonde bob. "Have you tried reaching your informant?" That question twisted something in my gut. Every attempt to contact him had failed. Calls unanswered. Messages left on read. Something was wrong-I could feel it. "I-" My words died as my phone rang. Katy darted up to grab it from the table. "It's the Chief," she said, wincing. "Guess he found out you skipped the hospital." So much for hoping it would take him a few more days. I pressed the phone to my ear. "Chief?" "You must have a death wish, Agent Torres!" he snapped. "For someone supposedly sensible, you are the most reckless damn person I've ever met." Here we go. "You're going to tear open your stitches and bleed out alone in that house," he barked on. "My location was compromised, sir," I cut in quickly. "It wasn't a random robbery-it was a targeted attack. The flowers left in my room had a note." A pause. "What did it say?" "'We're watching you,'" I said quietly. "I think it's from the Black Smoke Gang." He cursed under his breath. "This is exactly why I told you to leave the case alone. Richard and Matthew know how to follow leads without lighting up every red flag in the damn system. Which you've just done." My hands curled into fists. "So what now? I can't just sit back and-" "That's exactly what you're going to do!" he snapped. "Chief, please. Give me something to do. Anything. I can't just lie here like some helpless victim." Silence stretched for a moment. Then he exhaled sharply. "Fine. You want something to do? I'm sending you to Vegas on Friday. There's a witness who fled there-claims to know the gang's meeting spots and key members. But he won't talk on the phone, says he's being listened to." My pulse quickened. "I'm in." "I'm not finished." His tone sharpened. "You're bringing this witness back to Chicago in one piece so he can testify once we have a case built." Excitement surged through me. A witness. Finally-something concrete. "Oh, and one more thing," he added. "You'll be working with a new partner. One of the Vegas agents transferring to Chicago. You'll meet him there." My heart dipped. "Who?" "Paul Simmers." The name hit like a punch to the gut. My stomach dropped, and my chest clenched tight enough to crush my ribs. No. Not him. "Sir, is there anyone else I could possibly-" "That's all, Agent." The line went dead. "Fuck," I groaned, smacking my palm against my forehead. "What happened?" Katy asked, dragging me back from my spiraling thoughts. "Well, the good news is I'm officially back on the case in three days. There's a witness who can help us take down Rafael Santiago." "That's great news," Katy said, brow furrowing. "So... what's the bad?" I groaned. "I'm going to be partnered with Paul Simmers." Her jaw dropped. "Holy shit. Paul Simmers-as in FBI Academy Paul? The one you dated?" I nodded grimly. "Damn," she breathed. "That's going to be awkward as hell. What are you going to do?" "I don't know." I rubbed a hand over my face. "I can't refuse the assignment. And to make things worse, he's being reassigned here-to Chicago. Which means I'll be seeing a lot of him." Katy's lips twisted. "Hey, forget him. Focus on Santiago. If you can pin him down, Paul won't even matter. He's the jerk who broke your heart anyway. Let him rot." I forced a smile, though the truth burned in my chest. Because Paul hadn't been the one who broke my heart. I had been the one to break his. And something told me he hadn't forgiven me for it. For the first time since leaving the hospital, I wished I'd stayed in that bed.Nina"Compromised?" I mouthed into the comm."Yeah." Paul's voice was flat. "I'm picking up suspicious movement. Black Smoke gang might be here, and I think they're going to try to take our witness.""Noted." I killed the feed and clipped the device off my collar."Santiago, are you behind this?" I hissed."Put your claws away." He drawled. "I'm here alone, and not for any nefarious reason.""Why don't I believe that?" I narrowed my eyes at him."You clean up nice, Agent Torres." His hand found bare skin on my thigh. His touch and the way his eyes took me in, like I was a buffet, had electricity shooting up my spine. "What are you doing here?" I spat. "You didn't just happen to wander into Vegas and this exact event. Cut the bullshit."He chuckled instead of answering. Before I could pull away he spun me, wrapped an arm around my waist, and dragged me deeper into shadow until the party's noise became a muted, distant roar."You're being watched, Nina." He breathed. My heart pounded a
Nina "Torres." Paul's voice was as cold as ice and my reply was just as cold. "Simmers." I nodded coolly. "Let's get this show on the road shall we?" I had arrived in Vegas a few hours earlier and settled into the safe house the bureau had appointed for me. An hour ago, I had gotten a package for Simmers which included a dress, shoes and instructions of where to meet him. I'd have thought the outfit was him punishing me if Chief Keef hadn't already briefed me about the witness demanding to meet at a public gathering. Now, I had on the black slinky dress with the too high slit running up one side, four inch designer heels and a diamond choker around my throat. I couldn't remember when last I had gotten this dressed up. I couldn't wait to get back into my combat ready clothes. "Act natural." Paul instructed me. "The witness already knows what we will be wearing, and should be able to identify us in the crowd. He will make first contact and as soon as he does, our priority is to ge
Rafael"Mr. Santiago, we have him." "Good." I said, walking down the short metal stairs into the dimly lit basement. There, a tattooed man was chained to the wall, blood running down his face and covering his body. My men had already done a good job roughing him up, but it didn't feel half enough to me. My fingers itched to pull out my gun and put a bullet in his skull. The image of Nina bleeding out on the sidewalk with tears running down her face replayed in my head, fanning the flames of my fury. "Has he talked yet?" I asked one of my men while I undid the button of my suit jacket and pulled it off. Next, I rolled up the sleeves of my white shirt, not wanting to get blood on it. "Nothing important." Antonio replied. I stepped up close to the bastard who had stabbed Nina. "Who sent you?" "None of your business!" He spat. "It is my business." I drawled. "You know why? Because you and whoever the fuck is employing you is giving me a bad name." The man's mouth spread into a sm

Nina"Nina, no! Nina! Help me-please, Nina!"My eyes flew open, heart hammering against my ribs. Rosa's voice still echoed in my ears, desperate and raw. The same nightmare again. The same helplessness that had haunted me since the day she was taken from Ortega's.I tried to sit up, but a bolt of white-hot pain ripped through my side. "Fuck!" I gasped, collapsing back onto the bed."Take it easy. You almost died," a familiar voice said.My head snapped toward the sound. Rafael Santiago. The sterile white walls, the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor, and the faint antiseptic smell told me I was in a hospital. My mind raced, trying to piece together how I'd gotten here-and then it hit me. The alley, the knife, the blood."You bastard!" I spat. "Are you here to finish the job?"He pushed off the wall he'd been leaning against, one brow arching. "Finish you off?""You sent someone after me! You had me stabbed and-""Why would I do that?""Because I'm this close to digging up enough dirt
Nina“So anyway, after I win the case, I’m going to get promoted and start earning some real money,” Bryan said.I nodded, a polite smile plastered on my face. Lifting my glass, I hid a yawn behind it and silently prayed for a meteor to hit the restaurant. I’d rather be dead than listen to another one of my date’s stories. He’d spent the entire evening talking about himself and hadn’t asked me a single question.I had never been this bored in my entire life. Why the hell had I even agreed to this?Oh, right—because I’d blurted out to a gang leader that I had a date and was too embarrassed not to follow through.“There’s this apartment on Eleventh,” Bryan continued. “Pretty sweet place. I’ll be able to afford the rent after my promotion. It’s got a nice kitchen. Do you like to cook, Nina?”“Nope.”“But you’re Italian,” he laughed. “That’s impossible. Italians are known for their cuisine.”I barely stopped myself from rolling my eyes. God, he was such an ass. I opened my mouth to tell h
