Monday, 9am. London Publishing House.

Amelia learned three things in the first hour.

One — smart casual meant everyone else owned four blazers, not one.

Two — her boss was Mrs. Eleanor Finch, 58, who drank black tea and said "darling" when she liked you and "dear" when she was about to fire you.

Three — Mrs. Hart had friends everywhere.

"Amelia Johnson? The one from Kentucky" A woman with sharp glasses smiled too wide at the coffee machine. "I heard you got the Hart recommendation."

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 22:The box under the bed

Daniel didn't go back to Hart House alone. He tried to. He said, "Stay here, both of you, it's safer."Amelia looked at him like he had lost his mind."Daniel Hart, you think after I quit my job for you, after I published a book that destroyed your father's company, after I slept on your floor for a week — you think I'm going to let you walk back into that house alone?" She was already putting on her one blazer. Her hands were shaking, but her voice wasn't. "No. I'm coming."Mrs. Hart was already at the door with her coat. The grey coat. The one she arrived in. She hadn't taken it off since Monday, like if she took it off she would disappear."I'm coming too," she said. "It's still my house. For two more days. Bennett's men come on Monday to clear it."Three people. One shoebox. One bus ticket each. The bus to Hart House took 47 minutes. Daniel counted every stop.Amelia held his hand the whole way. She didn't talk. She just held it, tight, like if she let go he would float away. Her

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 22:The Thursday Meeting

Thursday came too fast.Amelia knew it was Thursday because the alarm didn't go off. The heater was still dead. The cold woke them up at 5am, all three of them, breathing white air in the shoebox.Daniel was already up. He was sitting on the floor, in his barista uniform, tying his shoes like his hands didn't belong to him.Mrs. Hart was in the tiny kitchen, making tea with the wrong tea bags. She had been there since Monday, sleeping on the bed while Daniel and Amelia took the floor. She said she didn't mind. She lied. Her back hurt every morning. But she never complained.Amelia stood in the doorway in her one blazer. She hadn't slept."Today," she said.Daniel looked up. His eyes were red. "Today."He had a shift at 6am. The meeting was at 10am. He was going to make lattes for strangers, then walk into a glass building to be told he owed £2M he didn't have."I will come with you," Amelia said."No," Daniel said, too fast. Then softer. "No, love. If you come, they will look at you l

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 21: Paying Back £2M with Lattes

Building from ZeroThe morning after Hart Group fell, Daniel woke up to the sound of the heater dying. Not the sick-cat noise anymore. A worse noise. A choking noise. Then silence. Then cold.He sat up on the blanket on the floor. His back hurt. His neck hurt. His apron from yesterday was still on the chair, smelling like burnt milk and coffee. The shoebox was freezing.Amelia was already awake. She was sitting at the tiny desk, one blazer over her pyjamas, staring at her phone. The light from the screen made her face look pale."How bad is it?" Daniel asked. His voice was rough from sleep. She didn't look up. "The article has 48,000 reads. Bennett Shipping released a statement. They said they will pursue repayment of the £2M loan."Daniel rubbed his face with both hands. "£2M. Two million pounds. For a boy who makes lattes at £12.50 an hour.""If you work every hour of every day for the next eighteen years," Amelia said, trying to joke, but her voice cracked, "you could pay it. If yo

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 20: The morning After

Hart Group fell at 9:03am.Not with a crash. With an email.Amelia saw it first on Mrs. Finch's computer, because London Publishing House's morning list showed all industry news.*SUBJECT: Hart Group Files for Administration - £2M Bennett Loan Exposed in New Bennett Book*The article had a photo. Page 47. The truth, printed in black ink, now on the internet.Daniel was making lattes at 6am when his phone started ringing. Not his father. Not his mother. Former employees. Friends who weren't friends. The barista manager who said, "Mr. CEO, you might want to take the day off."He didn't. He stayed and made bad foam until 9am.At 9:15, Amelia found him on the floor of their shoebox, apron still on, phone face-down."It's done," she said quietly."I know," he said. "My father called. He said... he said 'You printed us.' Not 'You ruined us.' 'You printed us.' Like we finally told the truth."He looked up. Eyes red, but calm."My mother is on a plane. She lands at 3pm. She said she wants to

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 19 ; The Printing

London Publishing House never printed anything at night.Except that night.9:47pm. Amelia's keycard still worked. Daniel's barista apron was in her bag because he refused to let her go alone.Mrs. Finch was at her desk, not surprised to see them."I thought you might come," she said. She had two cups of black tea. No "darling" this time. No "dear."On speakerphone, breathing.Mrs. Hart."Amelia," Mrs. Hart's voice crackled from London to Port Harcourt, or wherever she was. Cold, perfect. "Eleanor told me you found an old note. A mistake. We don't print mistakes."Daniel stepped forward. "Mother."Silence."Daniel? Is that you? Where are you? Your father -""I'm in a shoebox in London, Mother. On a floor blanket. With the girl you tried to pay fifty thousand dollars to leave me."Amelia put the manuscript on Mrs. Finch's desk. Page 47, with Charlotte's handwriting. *THE TRUTH.*"This isn't a mistake," Amelia said. "This is why you wanted him to marry Charlotte. This is why you came to

Their cafe had a leak. Not a metaphor. A real leak. Right above their table — the one table that was theirs — water dripped from the ceiling into a bucket Mrs. An had placed with a handwritten sign: _LONDON RAIN INSIDE. £1 OFF._Daniel was sitting under it anyway. Apron off, hair still damp from the espresso machine, two teas going cold.Amelia walked in soaked, bag clutched to her chest like it had gold inside. It did. Two phones."You said the rain is inside now," she said, sitting."It is," Daniel said. "I like it. Feels like our old bookshop."She didn't order. She put her phone on the table and slid it to him."Look at page 47."Daniel frowned. "Amelia, I don't work for Publishing -""Just look."He opened the photo. The footnote. Small print. _Hart loan 1999? £2M never repaid? Ask C.B. - per E.F._He read it once. Twice. Then again, slower. His face did something Amelia had never seen. Not anger. Not sadness. Empty."What is this?" he asked, voice flat."The reason your mother b
