Morning came sharp and merciless, tugging me out of sleep before I was ready. Still, I dragged myself to the training grounds. The rhythm of sparring, the clang of weapons, even the sound of fists hitting practice pads kept me sane. It was the only thing I could control, the only thing that steadied the storm of waiting for Damon.

The air that morning felt different, though. Not just the usual fatigue of soldiers but something heavier, taut like a rope pulled too tight. Whispers carried across the grounds, words I couldn’t catch, cut short whenever I came near. I shoved the unease aside, sparring until sweat ran down my back. When I finally stepped away for water, I spotted Abel.

He was leaning against the low wooden fence as though he had been waiting for me. I smiled faintly. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were recruiting chickens for backup.”

He didn’t return the smile. His expression was unreadable, calm as always, but there was something behind his eyes, something heavie

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 159

(Damon's POV)I woke up to the smell of something new. It wasn't the sharp, sterile scent of coffee I usually relied on, or the faint leather-and-metal tang of a house that was more fortress than home. It was warm with something sweet underneath it. It curled through the hallway like a hand tugging me out of sleep, coaxing instead of commanding. For a moment, I lay still, staring at the ceiling, wondering if my mind was playing tricks on me.Then my stomach answered with a low, traitorous growl.I dragged myself out of bed, ran a hand through my hair, and headed to the bathroom. To get cold water on my face. I wasn't going to stay long, I told myself. I had a hectic day ahead of me and I couldn't afford to eat and chat. Still, I dressed faster than usual.By the time I reached the stairs, the smell was stronger and impossible to ignore. I followed it down, my steps slowing without my permission, and when I reached the kitchen, I stopped short.Emma stood at the stove. She wore an apro

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 158

(Emma’s POV)I had known the moment Damon walked out of that meeting that something had shifted. His shoulders were tight in a way that wasn’t stress alone, his jaw set like he’d already made a decision and was just waiting for the right second to drop it into the world. We didn’t speak until we were back in the car, the doors shutting with a solid, final thud that felt heavier than usual.“It’s best if you move in with me,” he said, eyes on the road as he pulled out. “For now. Things are getting serious.”The word "move in" echoed in my head, bouncing around like it didn’t know where to land. My chest tightened before I could stop it, and I must have gone very still because Damon glanced at me, his brow creasing.“You don’t want to stay with me?” he asked carefully.“No—no, that’s not it,” I said too fast, shaking my head. “I do. I just… it’s a lot. All of this is a lot.” I gestured vaguely, meaning the danger, the secrecy, the life that seemed to loom around him like a second shadow

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 157

(Damon's POV)I had been trained to compartmentalize. It was a survival skill—one I’d perfected long before Emma ever came back into my life. You learned how to lock things away, how to bury truth beneath duty and focus, how to convince yourself that silence was protection. But standing in her apartment, with the door still broken and the echo of her scream lodged somewhere behind my ribs, the old rules didn’t work anymore.Emma stood across from me, arms crossed tight over her chest, eyes sharp despite the exhaustion dragging at her features.“You’re doing it again,” she said. “That thing where you decide for me.”I exhaled slowly. “Emma—”“No,” she cut in. “Don’t. You don’t get to brush this off. You don’t get to keep things from me again.” Her voice cracked, but she didn’t look away. “I’m ready. Whatever it is, I can handle it.”That was the problem.I knew she could. And I knew what it would cost her if I told her.The truth pressed against my teeth like broken glass. I’d kept it

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 156

(Emma’s POV)*Before the break in*The day began with a softness that felt almost undeserved.I arrived at work earlier than usual, the sky still pale and undecided, the kind of morning that made the city feel forgiving. The office lights hummed quietly as I slipped inside, coffee warm in my hands, my shoulders loose instead of tight for once. Nothing chased me. Nothing waited around the corner. For a few precious hours, I let myself believe that calm could be real.I laughed with my coworkers. The sound soothed me when it left my mouth, bright and unguarded. Someone told a ridiculous story about a client mishap, and I bent forward, hand on my stomach, eyes watering. They laughed too, and for a moment I wasn’t thinking about danger or secrets or the way my life had a habit of splitting open without warning. It felt like a borrowed happiness but I held it anyway.Still, little things felt… off.“Emma?”I looked up from my desk. “Yeah?”“Emma,” my coworker said again, too quickly, like

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 155

(Damon's POV)I had learned long ago that peace never lasted. It only waited quietly until you forgot how to hold your weapon. That morning dragged me back into duty without asking for permission.I stood alone in Dennis' deserted lair, some lights dimmed low enough to blur the edges of the room, screens glowing with intel feeds and scrolling reports. I hadn’t slept much. I hadn’t wanted to. Sleep made me soft lately. It made me think of Emma’s laugh, the way she tilted her head when she listened, the way she looked at me like I wasn’t something dangerous. That illusion didn’t survive headquarters.I had brought some of the headquarters documents with me. I was midway through reviewing shipment manifests tied to the upcoming auction when the first knot tightened in my chest. I saw weapons being transported through a tunnel. It wasn't the numbers I noticed but the patterns. They were the same routes going in the same direction in the exact same manner Dennis used to transport them, d

  • A private deal with the billionaire ceo   CHAPTER 154

(Emma’s POV)I took a deep breath as I stood in front of Damon's office. With shaky hands, I knocked at the door.“Come in.” He utters in a calm voice.I turned the knob and entered. He was seated while looking over some documents. His eyes softened as he looked up at me for a brief moment before looking back down. “Good morning, Emma.”“G-good morning.” He always looks so sexy when he is focused on his work.“I was wondering,” I said, standing in the doorway of his office, heart beating too fast for how casually I was trying to sound, “if you’d like to go out with me tonight. On a date.”Damon looked up from his desk slowly. Too slowly. His pen paused mid-signature. His eyes lifted to my face like he was making sure I was real, like I hadn’t just spoken a sentence he’d imagined a hundred times but never expected to hear first.“You’re asking me?” he said.I shrugged, pretending my palms weren’t damp. “Unless you suddenly forgot how dates work.”A few seconds passed by. Then his lips
