I wasn’t sure what I expected when Damon requested to know the mission details, but the moment he asked, both agents exchanged a quick glance. The brunette scanned the corridor, ensuring no one lingered nearby. Only when she seemed satisfied did she lean closer, her voice low enough to barely carry.

“We believe we’ve found the location of the double agent who escaped headquarters last month.”

Her words made the hairs on my back stand. My chest tightened. Damon flinched at my side. For a moment, the world narrowed to the sound of my heartbeat.

The double agent. The one whose betrayal had nearly cost us all.

I blinked, stunned. “You’re serious?”

The brunette nodded sharply, while the male agent’s expression remained straight like it was carved from stone. Damon’s hand twitched, as though he wanted to reach for me but forced himself not to. His voice, when it came, was steel.

“She’s not going.”

The words shot out before I could react. My head snapped toward him. “Excuse me?”

The night pressed heavily against us as we approached the compound. It loomed in the distance, a squat silhouette of steel and concrete half-buried in the hills, the type of location designed to vanish from maps and memory. Floodlights swept the perimeter in slow arcs, and a faint buzz of generators echoed through the night. We were back at the target's location.Howard should have been here. The thought stung, a wound that hadn’t closed. I could almost hear his voice steadying us, giving us orders with that gravelly edge that somehow grounded everyone. Without him, our steps felt unbalanced, our formation uneven.Natalie led, her movements sharp and efficient, though I could see the stiffness in her shoulders. The rookie followed, too quiet, still trapped in the cage of his guilt. The wounded men, one missing an arm and the other with a chest wound, stayed behind with the reinforcements setting up the perimeter. That left the rest of us, half a team, worn out by blood and exhaustion.

The forest had swallowed Howard. We’d left him behind.Even now, as we stumbled deeper into the wilderness, the echo of his last shots still rang in my ears. My instincts made my legs move forward, every step mechanical, but inside I was experiencing turmoil. I couldn’t look at the others. Couldn’t even look at the trail ahead. All I could see was him falling, blood soaking the earth, his body jerking with the impact of bullets meant for us.Natalie’s voice cut through the silence like a knife.“This is a disaster.”No one answered her.She went forward, her movements sharper than before, each stride fraught with agitation. The rookie lingered toward the back, head bowed and face pallid. He clutched his gun like a lifeline, although he hadn't chambered a single round since the firefight. His eyes were puffy, and shame was etched into every feature of his youthful face.I wanted to tell him it wasn’t his fault. That the twig snapping, the ambush and Howard’s death wasn’t on his shou

The forest was wrapped in pale mist when we set out at dawn, our boots pressing quietly into the damp earth. It was so quiet that a single whisper could be heard from miles. Every rustle of leaves, every distant call of a bird seemed louder than it should be, as if nature itself held its breath while we passed. We were heading for the supposed hideout of the double agent, the traitor who had slipped through headquarters’ grasp and humiliated us all. At least, that’s what Halstrom claimed. I wasn’t sure whether to believe him or not, but there was no turning back now.Howard walked at the front, broad-shouldered and balanced, every step calculated and precise. His calm presence rippled through the group, but beneath that calm, I noticed the cracks. The rookie, who was barely older than me, kept glancing around like shadows might swallow him whole. His breathing was too loud, his grip on the rifle too tight. Every time a branch snapped under his foot, I saw Howard’s jaw twitch, though h

The steady hum of the van pressed into my skull, its monotonous vibration making my thoughts appear louder than I wanted them to be. I sat stiffly, arms folded across my lap, staring at the blur of trees rushing past the tinted windows. The ride wasn't the only thing that made me tense. It was the way every set of eyes in this cramped vehicle seemed to pierce into me, silently weighing, subtly questioning. They weren’t hostile, not exactly. But their distance was sharp. Like a wall had been built long before I stepped a foot inside.I tried to shake it off. I’d been through the same with Abel's team. Still, I couldn’t deny the nagging at the back of my mind: why did Halstrom choose me of all people for this mission?I shifted in my seat, glancing toward the man sitting closest to the front. His attire and laid back demeanor showed that he was clearly in charge. If this was going to be my team for the next few days, maybe I should at least try.“Hello, sir. I'm excited to join you on t

The silence between Damon and me had grown louder than words. Two days had crawled by since the boardroom incident, and still we hadn’t spoken beyond clipped exchanges. I did what I usually did when I wanted a distraction. I threw myself into training with a kind of desperate focus, pushing until my arms shook from sparring drills and my throat burned from the dry air. For every punch, every kick and every sparring match, I gave my all and pushed harder, hoping exhaustion would quiet the storm in my chest. But even when sweat slicked my skin and my muscles trembled, I couldn’t escape him. His presence never left me.He would just stand by the corner of the hall, sometimes at the entrance. His cool aura would attract some glances. Even though I eyes met multiple times, neither of us was brave enough to approach the other. We avoided each other as if by unspoken agreement. But avoidance didn’t dull anything. It made everything worse. Every time I caught sight of him, heat crawled beneat
