Max’s POV

The council broke apart in chaos, their voices still ringing in my ears long after the chamber emptied. Alphas drifted out in clusters, their cloaks brushing stone floors, their whispers sharp enough to cut. Some muttered like cowards behind half-turned shoulders.

Some didn’t even bother to hide it. Their eyes slid over me… sharp and judging. Every glance stung, like they’d already decided I’d failed. My fists curled tight, nails biting into my skin. They were wasting the time we didn’t have.

I pushed through the massive doors before the High Elder even finished his last word. The air outside was a bit cold against my face, yet my blood boiled hotter with every step. They wanted me to wait, to deliberate, to move like wolves shackled in ceremony. But I wasn’t going to wait while she…

“Max.”

The voice slid in smooth, low, too calm for the storm raging in me. Leonard’s feet clicked against the stone as he caught up, his long stride unhurried, his composure too perfect. Always

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    87. The long story

Lana’s POVThe ropes cut into my wrists no matter how I squirmed, and every little move made it worse. My shoulders ached, my throat felt raw, and the air in the room was thick… wrong. Like a silence that didn’t belong anywhere but a dungeon. He sat across from me, calm. Too calm. Like this was just a chat over coffee and not… whatever this was.I forced myself to hold his gaze. “Why are you doing this? What did Max ever do to you?” My voice shook, but I didn’t drop my eyes.He leaned back slowly, lacing his fingers together like he had forever to sit there. A thin smile pulled at his mouth, but there was nothing warm in it… just sharp, cold amusement.“Why?” he echoed, as though the question amused him. “You think this is just about Max? About some petty grudge?” He leaned in, his voice dropping low, and I felt it press down on me, heavy.“No, Lana. This… it goes deeper. Way deeper.”I swallowed hard. My pulse was hammering in my ears. There was something in his eyes… dark, sharp… bu

Max’s POVThat was the final straw. Her eyes widened in shock as my hand tightened around her throat. The bass from the club thudded through me, but all I could focus on was her gasp... the rough, desperate sound of air catching in her throat.“You think I feel like playing games right now?”I muttered it under my breath, just for her. Her perfume… it was thick, clinging, almost too much. She came closer to me, her skin bare, like she was trying to patch up something that had nothing to do with her. Around us, people laughed, shouted… didn’t notice a thing. The lights painted everything in flashes of red and blue, but all I saw was her neck beneath my hand and Lana’s face burning in the back of my skull. The girl clawed at my wrist, legs shifting as panic started to kick in. She wasn’t Lana… She wasn’t even close. And yet she had dared to reach for me, dared to think I could be distracted. My grip tightened.I could end this. One twist, one jerk, and her breath would never come back.

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    85. Claws

Max’s POVMy claws ripped straight through his chest before he could even try to move this time, and the heat of his blood sprayed across my hand. It was thick…metallic, and it clung to my skin. He gasped, staggered back a step, his eyes wide… but that damned smile stayed on his face even as he went down.“You can’t stop it,” he choked out, blood bubbling at his lips. “She’s… ours now.”Then he collapsed, the sound of his body hitting the earth dull and final. No more words. No more movement. The forest swallowed the noise, all at once. Too quiet. The only thing left was the sound of me… my own ragged breathing tearing in and out of my chest like I couldn’t get enough air.Ethan’s voice came from behind me, steady but tight, like he was forcing it to stay that way. “Max. He was just a messenger. A sacrifice. Someone sent him to push you over the edge.”I stared at the corpse, my chest burning with fury I couldn’t put anywhere. My voice came out low, sharp. “Then they got exactly what

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    84. The search

Max’s POVThe night wrapped the forest in a heavy, cold silence, air biting at my skin. The pale moon struggled through the tangled branches, but still… it didn’t feel right. The woods… they had a weight to them, pressing in, felt off, too quiet, too heavy, like it was watching me, too quiet, too alive. Like they were watching. The leaves broke under my steps as I followed, soggy and uneven, scattering as my boots pressed into the damp earth. Ethan stayed near my side, his nerves rolling off him until they sank into me too. The woods were quiet but sharp, like they were daring me to slip. Each crack, each snap, made my chest squeeze tight, my heartbeat kicking up in my ears.I had sent different units out in every direction, but this group had tugged at me. My chest still burned from the council meeting, from the thought of Lana slipping further from me with every wasted second.“Alpha,” one of the scouts whispered ahead, his voice tight with restraint, “we picked up something earlier

Max’s POVHe stepped closer again, lowering his voice, as if we shared a secret against the world. “Let me help you. Let me organize it. I can handpick men who won’t fail you. Men who know how to move unseen, who won’t question orders, who won’t hesitate.”I looked at him then, really looked. His eyes were steady, unwavering. A picture of loyalty. Of reason…Of control. And yet, something in me recoiled. Something, buried under rage, whispered that his timing was too perfect. But I shoved the whisper aside. I couldn’t afford paranoia… not when Lana’s life was at risk. “Why?” I asked, my voice low, sharp as broken glass. “Why help me?”For the first time, his lips curved faintly. Not a smile, something smaller, softer. “Because I know what it means to lose. And I will not stand by while you face that.”The words struck deep. My chest tightened, my throat burning with the ache of it. He had said the one thing that slipped past my defenses.I exhaled hard, shoulders slumping under the wei
