WHAT IT COST

Nina’s POV

Axel didn’t leave like I’d expected him to

That was the first thing I noticed after the silence stretched too long between us.

He just stood there. Waiting. Like he expected me to say something.

Anything at all, but I didn’t. Because I didn’t trust myself to.

Because if I opened my mouth right now, I wasn’t sure what would come out, anger, hurt, or something worse.

“You’re not going to say anything,” he said quietly.

It wasn’t a question. “No,” I replied.

He nodded once.

BREAKING POINTNina’s POVI should have left after that. That was the logical thing to do. Walk away, call it a one-time decision, pretend the training session didn’t mean anything. But logic had never been the strongest voice in my head.“Again.”Axel’s voice cut through the quiet morning air, steady and unyielding.I exhaled slowly, rolling my shoulders back. “You’re enjoying this way too much.”“I’m doing my job.”“You’re not my trainer.”“I am now.”I shot him a look. “That wasn’t an agreement.”“You’re still here.”Ryan snorted from where he stood leaning against the fence. “He’s got you there.”I pointed at him without looking. “Stay out of it.”“Gladly,” Ryan said, clearly not meaning it at all.I lunged forward again, faster this time, sharper, more controlled.Axel met me head-on. Our movements collided, force meeting precision as we circled each other.“Better,” he said.“I wasn’t trying to impress you.”“You don’t have to.”I pushed harder. Every move I made, he matched. It

TERMS OF WARNina’s POVI told myself I wasn’t going. That was the plan.Wake up, ignore Axel, throw myself into work, and pretend the conversation in the courtyard never happened.Except my body didn’t get the memo.Because when morning came, I was already awake. My wolf paced beneath my skin, agitated, like she knew something I didn’t want to admit. The room was still dim, sunlight barely creeping through the curtains.Too early for most. Not early enough for me.I dressed quickly, pulling on training gear out of habit before I could even think about it.I froze halfway through tying my laces.…Seriously?I stared down at myself. Then groaned. “Great.”I finished tying them anyway. The training grounds were quiet when I arrived. No noise. Just the open field, the worn dirt underfoot, and the faint scent of morning air.And him.Axel stood at the center of the clearing like he’d been there for hours. He didn’t look surprised to see me.That annoyed me.“You’re early,” he said.I cros

THE WEIGHT OF WHAT’S COMINGNina’s POVThe warning echoed in my head with every step I took down the corridor.I pushed open the doors leading out into the courtyard, letting the cool air hit my face. It helped just a little. Grounded me. Slowed the sharp edge of my thoughts.Ryan was leaning against the fountain when I stepped out, like he’d been waiting.“You done getting lectured?” he asked.I walked past him. “I wasn’t getting lectured.”“Right,” he said, falling into step beside me. “You were just getting told everything you didn’t want to hear.”I shot him a look. “You’re very insightful today.”“I try.”We walked in silence for a few seconds.“She’s right, you know.”I stopped. “I don’t need you to agree with her.”“I’m not agreeing with her,” Ryan said. “I’m agreeing with reality.”I turned to face him.“I’m not falling apart.”“You’re cracking.”“I’m not.”“You are,” he said, not raising his voice. “And you’re pretending you’re not.”I looked away. Because arguing felt pointl

THE EDGE OF CONTROLNina’s POVThe scent hit me before I saw it.I stepped out of the vehicle before it had even fully stopped, boots crunching against gravel as I moved toward the small clearing just off the southern border trail.Ryan was right behind me.“So this is becoming a pattern now,” he muttered.Kaiden didn’t respond. He was already crouched beside the body.I slowed as I approached, forcing my breathing to steady. I needed to maintain control. But the moment I saw the scout, that control slipped, just for a second.I recognized him.His body was twisted slightly, like he had tried to run before he was caught. His throat bore the same clean, precise cut as Jared’s.Ryan exhaled sharply. "Yeah… that's not a coincidence anymore."“No,” I said quietly.Kaiden stood slowly. “Same method. Same precision.”“Same intent,” I added.Ryan crossed his arms. “Nate’s cleaning up his mess.”“Or covering his tracks,” Kaiden said.I crouched beside the body, scanning for anything out of pl

PRESSURE POINTSNina’s POVThe silence after Axel left didn't feel like peace. It felt like something hollow, like the room had been emptied of more than just his presence.I stood there for a long moment, staring at the closed door, my chest rising and falling too fast for someone who hadn’t moved.I dragged a hand down my face and turned away, forcing myself back toward the desk.Work. That’s what I needed. Not feelings. Not confusion. Not Axel. Just something I could control.I grabbed a stack of reports and flipped through them, scanning patrol rotations, supply logs, guard assignments, anything to anchor my thoughts. It didn’t work.Because every few seconds, my mind drifted back to him.To the way he looked at me. To the way he said my name. To the way he... A sharp knock interrupted my thoughts.“What?”The door opened anyway.Ryan leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, studying me like I was a problem he hadn’t figured out yet.“You done pretending to read those?” he aske

I saw it in the slight tightening of his jaw. But he didn’t look away.“Then let me prove it.”“How?” I asked.“By staying.”I frowned. “Staying?”“Yes.”“You mean like you should’ve done before?”His gaze held mine.“Yes.”The honesty in that answer caught
