Suddenly, Marie gets a call from Candy's school informing her that Candy had an accident. She hurried back to school and took Candy to the hospital; she needs to cancel the flight.

Marie's breath was taken in her throat as she listened to the words at the other end of the phone. Her mind was racing, her hand on the phone closing tighter until her knuckles were white.

"Miss, this is the school nurse. There's been an accident with your daughter, Candy. She fell on a field trip and is being transported to the hospital. We advise you to come right away," the voice on the phone told her, its tone measured but with an underlying sense of urgency.

Marie's pulse raced as fear overcame her, taking the ice-cold calculation that had directed her movements just moments earlier. Candy—her little girl—was injured. She couldn't accept it. She didn't have time to think of anything else.
