Several hours later, as the clock ticked beyond noon, the mansion's front doors creaked open, and the footsteps resonated in the corridors. Fiona remained seated in the grand living room, her heart still beating wildly from the melee with Marie, her mind a maelstrom of doubt. She looked at Liza, who was happily playing with her toys now, albeit with the wariness glimmering in her eyes. The shadow of doubt had been planted, and she had no clue how to uproot it.

The ring of the doorbell pierced the quiet, followed by the muted hum of voices. Fiona's heartbeat faltered. She rose to her feet, smoothing her palms against the sides of her dress as she tried to calm her racing heart. At the back of her mind, she recognized that this was no ordinary drop-by. Something was going to change in this household. Something irreversible.

Charles and Madam Jamaica Billion came in together, their bodies striking and imposing in the doorway. Charles, ever dressed to the nines, seemed as though he'd just

"I won't allow you and Liza to leave this house; you are family now. Don't pay attention to what Marie said to you," Charles stated resolutely. "Even my grandma won't be able to prevent me. My grandma thinks about your safety-that's why she said it to you-but that doesn't mean she doesn't like you."Fiona's heart swelled with his words but something still weighed heavily in her chest that she could not shake off. She'd never expected to hear Charles so certain so sure but hearing it made her realize how much their lives had changed between them. Despite that, the shadows of uncertainty lingered, seeping into the back of her mind. She looked up at him, her eyes meeting his in a mixture of thanks and wariness. "Charles. I don't want to be a pawn in some game of the family. I never wanted any of this." Her tone was still even, but the feeling that lay beneath it was evident. "I'm not going to sit here and be told what's best for me. For Liza."Charles's jaw tightened and he took another

"Fiona, it shall heal this one when we wed. Just be still; I shall not let Marie tear us apart," Charles assured. The air between them was electric with unspoken emotion, the intensity of the moment real. Fiona was struck by the force of Charles's words slicing deep into her chest, replacing the ever-present fear that had been her constant companion for so long. His eyes, usually so guarded, were bare with something she hadn't expected: vulnerability. For a fleeting instant, their world seemed to evaporate the imposing mansion, the games they had all been playing, the threats, the pressure. There was only she and he, two individuals who had been drawn into this situation, struggling to find an escape.Fiona's breath stuck in her throat, her chest thudding out a frantic beat as she gazed upwards at him. His face was inches from hers, his face so close that she could feel the heat of his breathing on her, his face drawing closer with every beat of her heart. She felt aware of the manner

Charles's voice was a whip crack, cutting and definitive. "I said enough." His voice was all but a breath before his hand flashed out, capturing Fiona's wrist in a hold significantly stronger than she had anticipated. The room became tense, and for a second, time stood still. Fiona felt the warm heat of Marie's glare searing into her back, but she couldn't manage to turn around. Her heart was racing with a combination of anger, frustration, and confusion bursting through her.Charles didn't glance at Marie. He didn't even look at Madam Jamaica. His gaze was fixed only on Fiona, his face strained with anger, his jaw clenched hard. "Let's go," he muttered, his voice low and ominous, though there was something gentler in his touch, an unspoken request for her to come. Not waiting for an answer, he pulled her along, his pace swift and resolute. Fiona didn't struggle, her thoughts still reeling, her mind circling in all directions. She could hear Marie's mocking laughter ringing in the bac

Marie's lips twisted into a wicked smile, as if the room's tension had finally worked in her favor. She had been waiting for this moment, and now everything was falling into place. She moved forward deliberately, her heels clicking on the floor, each step a testament to her deliberate control. "You don't get it at all, do you, Fiona?" Marie's tone was low and venomous, with a darker undertone, a threat as much about control as power. She gave the long, measured glance at Fiona before her attention focused on Charles, as if verifying the truth she already knew. "You think this is all about you and your daughter? About your little, temporary 'family'? But it's not. It never was."Fiona's jaw clenched, her muscles taut like a spring. "You're mistaken, Marie. This is about Liza. This is about me standing up for her against you, against all the things you're pulling behind the scenes."Marie emitted a brief, derisive laugh, a sound that grated on Fiona's nerves. "Guard her? You think you'r

"What are you trying to do, huh?" Fiona's voice cut through the air, her anger mounting."You think you can play Charles with your deception? You're not going to get away with it."Marie's lips parted in a false look of concern, her voice syrupy sweet. "Oh, Fiona, dear," she said, her tone low and full of phony sympathy. "I don't need to manipulate anybody. I just need to tell the truth."Her eyes darted to Liza, still sitting next to her mother, regarding the scene with big, puzzled eyes. "And the truth is, honey," Marie went on, her voice now turning directly to Liza, "your mother has a talent for making everything appear great on the outside. But the truth? The truth is much bleaker."Fiona could feel the chill of coldness wrap around her as Marie's eyes remained locked on Liza. The manner in which she was manipulating her words, sowing seeds of doubt into her daughter's head, was too much. It was bad enough to fight for herself but to do this to Liza? To sow seeds of deceit about
