Marie's heels clicked sharply on the marble floors of the Billion estate, her very presence cutting through the serenity like a knife. Her eyes stilled as she walked down the long hallway lined with gold-framed portraits of ancestors whose eyes seemed to follow her every movement. Something in the atmosphere felt altered charged, alive with streams of secrets she had yet to discover.

She discovered Madam Jamaica in the drawing room, sitting majestically in her high-backed chair, a teacup balanced daintily in her fingers. Morning sunlight streaming through the huge windows illuminated the sides of her silver hair, producing an almost otherworldly radiance. Charles stood by the fireplace, his jaw clenched, his stance uncharacteristically protective as though he was repressing something.

The crisp air in the morning held a hint of autumn's chill as Fiona wrapped her shawl more closely around her shoulders and led Liza into the clinic. Outside, the world was ordinary—cars moving down the street, voices from a nearby café across the street, sunlight filtering through tall glass windows—but for Fiona, the white walls of the hospital always felt like entering a war zone. Every visit was another battle round, another foe to battle, another silent prayer whispered into the air.Liza's small hand tightened around hers, delicate but persistent. "Mommy," she whispered, her tone muted as if the corridors required reverence, "do you think… maybe today's the day?Fiona bent down slightly, brushing a strand of soft hair away from her daughter’s face. That hair, finally growing back soft and uneven after months of chemo, felt like the most precious thing in the world. “I hope so, baby. You’ve been so strong. No matter what the doctor says, I’m proud of you. Always.”Liza's eyes glo

The estate pulsed with a still, misleading quiet. Outside its wrought-iron gates, the world proceeded as normal, but within the Billion halls, storms brewed in the secrets that lurked.Charles stood against the high window of his study, arms crossed, jaw clenched like carved marble. Fiona paced at the other end of the room. She never did like waiting, and now each second was like an unraveling thread."They'll know, Charles," Fiona spoke low at last, her voice trembling on the combination of fear and determination. "Marie isn't stupid. She'll get a whiff of something."Charles pivoted towards her. His dark, steady, unflinching eyes met hers. "Let her feel. Let her guess. She won't leave this alone. Not this time."Fiona's head moved back and forth, her arms hugging herself as if to protect from a chill she alone could perceive. "She doesn't require evidence. She only requires an opening. If she distorts what happened, if she turns Candy on Liza once more.He took three steps across th

The following morning, the Billion compound came to life with its customary serene magnificence.the tinkling of china, the soft sound of maids padding down the corridors, the gentle rustling of silk drapes as sunlight flooded in.Marie sat in the breakfast salon, her teacup balanced between her fingers daintily, yet her eyes hard, restless. She had felt it for days now something shifting in the air. Charles's curt responses. Madam Jamaica's lingering meetings behind closed doors. Fiona pacing the halls with a tension that almost seemed. hopeful.Hope. Marie almost sneered at the mention of the word. That woman had no right to it.The soft sound of footsteps resounded from the hallway, and Candy rushed in, her hair a bit messy, her little face still wet from washing. She jumped up on the chair next to her mother, holding onto her doll tightly.Marie put down her teacup. "Slow down, sweetie. What's the hurry?"Candy nibbled at her lip, her eyes flicking as if she had a secret she couldn

When at last the school bell did ring, their heads swiveled nearly as one. Liza stepped out of the building, her backpack straps held tight in her hands, her face tired but lighting up as soon as she spotted her mother. Fiona stood to meet her, throwing an arm around her daughter's shoulder protectively, as if she were standing guard against an unseen world that was ever ready to do her harm.Charles bent down slightly to meet Liza’s eyes, his voice softer than Fiona had ever heard it. “Ready to go home, sweetheart?”Liza nodded blushing, a small smile pulling at the corners of her mouth. She looked from her mother to Charles, feeling something implicit in the way they stood together, their hands touching as if they couldn't seem to release each other. For the first time, she didn't simply look at Charles as the man bound to her mother's trials but as one who stood with them. The three of them moved towards the vehicle, the atmosphere thick with unsaid promises and threatened dangers.

Charles rested against the stone pillar beside the faculty entrance, his lanky build not easily overlooked, even as he attempted to fade into the background. Students flowed past him, some of them glancing over at the snappy-suited stranger who obviously didn't fit into the university halls. He paid them no mind, his eyes focused only on the woman within.Through the glass doors, he observed Fiona talking to a crowd of students, her hands gesturing as she taught something with enthusiasm, her voice conveying that blend of authority and warmth that got people to listen. For an instant, Charles ignored the tempest raging outside these doors, the family intrigue, Marie's plots, his grandmother's frigid approval. Here, Fiona was herself, and he felt himself close to. enchanted. But then the reminder of why he was here constricted his chest. He wasn't here to admire her. He was here because everything around them was falling apart quicker than he could get it back together.Fiona waved her
