MARCUS

Emal finally returns to the castle, and an odd sense of relief washes over me, as if a heavy weight has been lifted off my chest. It’s not easy watching him struggle, but I have to keep up the act. I can’t let him think I care. If I indulge him, he’ll grow weak. And weakness is not an option for the next Alpha King. Not that I have a choice in the matter. Changing the crowned heir at this stage would make my pack a laughingstock across the kingdom.

But enough about that.

It’s time to enjoy my evening.

I make my way to the Luna’s chamber, moving swiftly through the halls. Soon, I’m standing behind her as she undresses for the night. She seems busy, just like always. I often wonder what exactly keeps her occupied since most of the pack’s responsibilities fall on me and Aldrien.

She removes her necklace, setting it on the wardrobe in front of her standing mirror. As she studies her reflection, her gaze shifts, meeting mine through the glass.

EMAL The voices of my father and Blake echo relentlessly in my head, fueling the storm of emotions raging inside me. The pressure is unbearable—I need to release this pent-up frustration, or I might explode from suffocation. For a moment, I consider sneaking out of the castle again to clear my mind, but I know the guards are on high alert. After what happened yesterday, I’m certain Father has given them strict instructions to keep an eye on me. My thoughts drift to Matilda. Maybe she can soothe me, calm me enough so I can sleep tonight. I head straight for her chamber, but upon arrival, her maid informs me she’s in the bath. Bad timing. I should have thought this through. With no other option, I let my feet carry me aimlessly. Soon, I find myself outside the castle, wandering with no destination in mind—just searching for some kind of peace. As I cross the empty field far behind the castle, a faint sound catches my attention. Footsteps. And something being dragged along the gr

MARCUS I wake up abruptly, allowing myself to be fully stable as I hear the guard’s voice outside my chamber. Sitting up, I call him in. He bows respectfully before speaking. “My Alpha, I came to ask about the guests we received last night.” It takes me a second to recall his reference—the Arctic Howlers. The representatives of the Arctic Howlers that I put on hold due to the shock I received from the report and the severity of the report they brought was what he was referring to. My feedback to their Alpha has been put on hold for too long and sooner or later, I will have to attend to them. “It’s alright. You may go. I will attend to them as soon as I finish my morning duties,” I tell him, dismissing him with a nod. As he exits, I summon my Beta, Aldrien, through our mind-link. “Meet me in the throne hall. We need to discuss the Arctic Howlers’ matter.” “Understood,” he responds. While waiting, I decide on something else. It’s time for Emal to start stepping up. “Before

EMAL Instead of answering Lilly’s question, I just stand there, silent, locked in her embrace as minutes slip by. There’s something about the warmth of her hug that reminds me of Matilda’s—the only comfort I’ve ever known. She pats my back gently before pulling away, her eyes scanning my face with concern. “Sit,” she says, nudging me into a nearby chair. “Now tell me—what happened?” So, I tell her. Everything. The things I heard, the confusion twisting inside me, the fear of facing the possible truth. When I finally finish, she lets out a long sigh. “That’s… a lot,” she says. “What are you going to do now?” I shake my head. “I don’t know, Lilly. I don’t even know where to start. I want answers, but I—I don’t think I’m ready for them.” My voice breaks. She studies me for a moment, then hesitates before asking, “Wait… did the Luna actually say you had another mother?” “Not exactly,” I admit. “She just said she could never be my mother. That my face reminds her of ‘that woman

LILLY The moment the rain begins to fall, worry grips me. It’s already late into the night, and Grandma must so worried about me. There’s no way I’ll make it home in time. Emal and I take shelter under the nearest tree, watching as the downpour intensifies. My mind churns with conflicting thoughts as I am torn between my concern for him and the consequences I’ll face when I finally return home. But no matter how much I fear my grandmother’s anger, I can’t bring myself to walk away from Emal. Not when he’s standing before me like this—drenched, exhausted, and burdened by something he hasn’t yet spoken about. If it isn’t very important, Emal will not show up in that manner which he did. His presence demands my attention, drawing me into his world of unspoken troubles. Firstly, I wonder what had transpired to make him this way. When he finally begins to speak, he tells me everything—his doubts, his confusion, the pain of not knowing the truth about himself. Listening to his narratio

LILLY Emal waits until I step inside my house before turning to leave. From the window, I watch his figure disappear into the distance, and wave goodbye at his behind as he disappeared into the distance. Letting out a deep sigh, I brace myself for what’s to come. Moving carefully through the house, I make sure to keep my footsteps light, not wanting to accentuate my presence to my grandma. I place my bag in its usual spot and tiptoe to her bedside, relieved to see her eyes closed. Just as I start to relax, believing I’ve successfully avoided her notice, her voice cuts through the silence. “Where are you coming from? And who followed you here?” My heart lurches. I freeze, momentarily speechless. I should have known. Grandma never goes to bed without seeing me first, except on rare occasions. “Ah, Granny, you’re awake,” I say, feigning nonchalance. I hurry to her bedside, grasping her aged hands, stalling for time. “I wasn’t sleeping. Answer my question,” she presses, sitting

EMAL Still in Matilda’s room, I know I need to approach Matilda and probably inquire from her about the incident with Mother, but I also know I can’t afford to raise her suspicion. She’s perceptive, able to read between the lines and sense things beyond what’s being said. If I’m not careful, she’ll start asking questions I’m not ready to answer. After much contemplation, I make a conclusion to frame it as a general concern, something that anyone may have noticed. It will look like that of a concerned child to the mother. This way, I can discuss the matter without drawing any attention to myself. Stifling a cough as we sit together, I ask in a nonchalant tone, “Have you noticed anything strange about the Luna lately?” Matilda glances at me, keeping a neutral face. “You mean Mother? No. Why?” “Oh, you know, one of my bullies made a remark about her being sneaky these days. It got me wondering.” She scoffs. “You know how gossip spreads in Alacia. There’s always some ridiculous

EMAL As I prepare for school, my ears catch whispers from a group of maids near the Luna’s chambers. Normally, I wouldn’t pay them any attention, but there’s something about the hushed urgency in their voices that piques my curiosity. Instinctively, I slow my pace, focusing on their conversation. “She’s lucky—so lucky,” one of them murmurs. “Can you believe we, mere maids, are privileged to witness something like this?” “What did I miss?” another voice joins in, clearly arriving late to the discussion. “Shh! Keep your voice down,” one of them warns before sighing. “It’s about Norla and Harvey.” I recognize those names immediately. Norla is the Luna’s personal maid, and Harvey is one of the castle guards—one of her trusted people. “What about them?” the newcomer asks. “Wait… Harvey, the guard?” “Of course, who else?” “Alright, spill it.” “Norla’s been sneaking into Harvey’s room every night. It’s been going on for about two weeks now.” “That’s not exactly a surprise.

EMAL I watch as Norla approaches the hidden compartment, her expression unreadable. Instead of alarm, her reaction suggests familiarity. She knows about this obviously. The maids were right. Being the Luna’s right-hand person who does the dirty tasks for her, she probably knows what the scent and liquid is all about. "Oh, not again" she murmurs. I position myself properly in order to see everything she is doing. While the secret compartment remains open, Norla proceeds to search for a piece of cloth within a nearby box. Suddenly, a deep, hushed murmur emerges from within the concealed space. "Where is her ladyship?" Norla flinches, nearly losing her balance. "Hey, careful." Recognition dawns upon her as the voice continues and her tense posture gradually relaxes. She clutches her chest, exhaling sharply. "That was close. You scared the hell out of me." "I didn’t mean to." The voice is familiar. Maddeningly so. I strain to recall who it belongs to, but my mind wouldn’t coop

LILLYEmal's presence in this kind of situation is nothing but a soothing balm to me. For the first time since our friendship, he is the one doing the consoling and motivating, not the other way round.Back at the werewolf castle when Emal was almost dropped dead by that big beast-looking man, I couldn't take it anymore and screamed on instinct. Never did I expect such a thing to happen thereafter when my hairpin fell. My hair? No! It had never grown out to such length. I panicked. What was happening?I couldn't stand the way people stared at me like I was some sort of bad omen or monster, thus; I made a run for it. Ever since I took solace in the mini hut, several questions ran through my mind. What happened back at the wolf castle? What am I? There is no record in history that says such ever happened to a human. The whole scenario continuously replay in my mind, making me doubt myself more. Why does grandma sing it to me not to ever associate with werewolves? Why does she insist I

Not when she’s still shaking from what she unleashed. That kind of power… it does something to the mind. And to the heart. Especially to someone like her.Oh heavens, she's fucking human. Well...maybe not. I need to find out who exactly she is, and what. The first place I check is the restaurant. It's dim and quiet, almost eerie without her voice ringing through the kitchen or her scent lingering around. The only presence I sense is Old Fogey’s, washing glasses with his usual huffing and puffing.I don’t ask. I don’t need to. She’s not here.I already know where she is.The hut. Our little hideout which is just far enough to be forgotten by the pack but close enough to sneak away when the world became too much. It is our place. The one place where titles doesn’t matter. MATILDA We barely make it five steps out of the throne hall when Father dismisses us before a guard appears, bowing low. “The Luna requests your presence, immediately.”The guard's tone and gestures as he says it indicates that she wants us all—four of us, excluding Emal. Of course she does. She didn’t even step into the throne room earlier despite that Father instructed a messenger to beckon on her. She claimed the moment Emal transformed had ‘overwhelmed her heart’—whatever that means. But I saw the glint in her eyes as she clutched her chest back at the courtyard. It was no breakdown. Just a carefully timed performance to avoid what she already suspected would unfold in that throne hall. She knew it wouldn’t end in her favor.Darius walks ahead, flanked by Shawl and Xander. EMAL“Who is that girl to you, Emal?” Father asks, his gaze fixed on me with that signature sharpness that always cuts too deep. The throne hall is empty now, except for the three of us; him, Master Aldrien, and me. Everyone else was dismissed the moment he made his declaration. But I know this isn’t over. Not really.I glance at Master Aldrien but his presence here means this conversation was probably planned.“Who do you mean?” I ask, though the name echoes loud and clear in my mind.“Don’t play games with me, boy,” Father snaps calmly in that unsettling, dangerous way of his. “You know exactly who I’m talking about.”I stay silent.I won’t give her name to him. Not when I still don’t know where we stand. Not when I know what he ordered Blake. What he allowed. I can't do well to think everything is going to end well if I give him Lilly's name. I ha e to talk to her myself first before knowing what next. It’s Master Aldrien who breaks the silence. “Her name is Lilly.”Father’s brow c

The last howl I let out had already left some spectators injured...tossed backward, stunned, bleeding from their ears. But I don’t look back.I can’t.I’m not me anymore. The forest welcomes me. EMALReturning to the ceremonial courtyard, the ceremonial rite begins. I make sure to evade Shawl or any other sibling of mine as I proceed in coordinating the arrangements for the ceremonial rites. The courtyard is now filled with hushes as the pack’s elite soldiers march out in flawless formation. Their synchronized steps echo against the stones sharply. Each of them carries a ceremonial blade—polished, curved, and ancient-looking. It feels like the pulse of the earth itself, like the heartbeat of every Luna that ever ruled before ours. When the final movement of the blade dance concludes, they drop to one knee as one, heads bowed. Then, from the line of soldiers, the lead demonstrating soldier steps forward. EMALThe outdoor celebration soon begins as ordered by the Alpha. The sun casts a warm, amber glow over the courtyard, where silk banners ripple in the breeze—each one bearing the royal sigil: a silver wolf howling beneath a crescent moon with touch of an irregular design I actually didn't take interest to know what it means. The nobles who are only for the outdoor event are already arriving, dressed in their finest silks and ceremonial armor. Guests are laughing with the distant tune of flutes and lyres, and warriors perform blade dances at the prepared spot for them.At the far end of the courtyard, a raised platform has been arranged for the royal family. Elegant, high-backed chairs are ready for the Alphas and royal figures of our pack and other packs. EMALThe Luna's Birthday. After days of preparation, it is finally the D-day. As scheduled, the events are divided into two major participations. Starting off will be the indoor event taking place in the throne hall which includes prayers, gifting, and small dances from dance troupes. Then, the outdoor event is scheduled for later in the day, in the open field of White Fur Pack. The throne hall is a grand, intimidating place; high ceilings adorned with ravelled carvings, golden chandeliers, and brown banners hanging in deep earth-like colours, bearing the symbol of our pack. The room is filled with the scent of fresh lilies, the Luna’s favorite, arranged meticulously along the walls and on the long banquet table. People from the royal family are around already and also esteemed guests invited for the indoor event. The Luna sits beside the Alpha on the elevated dais, poised and elegant in her embroidered silver gown.
