LOGINTHE SPOTLIGHT
The next morning, I got up feeling a mix of joy and anxiousness. Today wasn’t going to be like my normal quiet school mornings.
As I guessed, when I arrived at school, the principal rang the bells, signaling all the students to gather in the school hall.
“Most of us might be wondering why I called everyone together here, since it’s not something we normally do,” Principal Dan started. He was a very tall, strict man… His sharp pointed nose made me think of Michael Jackson after he got plastic surgery.
“In the last state school quiz, our students made us proud, making Oakdale High emerge as the winner in the quiz competition.”
What followed was a thunderous series of claps from the crowd. I forced myself to clap… but was caught up by the principal yelling.
“Please welcome our champions to the stage… Asher Miguel, Brian Miller and Flora Patti.”
I dragged my legs, which suddenly felt heavy, to the stage and stood alongside my so-called buddies, with my head dropped shyly.
From the corner of my eyes, I could see guilt in My friends’ eyes… especially Brian.
“As a result of the outstanding performance of our students in the quiz, our basketball team is automatically accepted in the basketball league hosted by Harvard University,” he announced, and more thunderous clapping and screaming followed.
“So I call on the captain of the Bulldogs to come out and give a speech to the students and also congratulate our scholars,” the principal added. And a smirk climbed up my face… Tyler!
I raised my head high, trying to look as confident as I could, when he strutted up the stage in his Nike Jordans, his hairy legs a little exposed by his shorts.
“Prestigious students of Oakdale, it is my pleasure to congratulate our scholars for their hard work and success in the past quiz, which has set the pace for us, granting the basketball team of the school a spot in the Harvard league.”
The principal smiled, urging him to shake our hands. As he approached, I felt a little twirl in my chest… Karma sure is a bitch.
He brought his hands forward. I noticed a bit of malice in his eyes. He shook me a little violently… but I didn’t care. Perhaps he’d have a bit of respect for me now. I got him and his team a free lottery ticket to fame… that is if they make it to the top ten.
In class, I sat at my usual spot, isolated from the others, when Flora and Brian walked in… They approached my seat, and I sat ignoring their presence even as they stood in front of me. I focused my gaze on the diagram I was labelling.
“We know we’ve been total dicks about this whole thing between you and Tyler,” Flora began. I stayed silent, still focused on the book on my desk.
“At least listen to us… we warned you about Eleanor too at the beginning, didn’t we…?” Brian cut in, probably irritated by my silence.
“Real friends don’t run away when there’s a problem… they stand for each other,” I said coldly, still fixated on my book.
“Okay! We know we fucked up, but we’re sorry. We truly are,” Flora said quietly.
“So we won the competition, and suddenly you want to be friends again? Tell me, guys, if we didn’t win, would you be talking to me now?” I yelled angrily, and they moved back a bit in fear.
I cleared my throat, hoping I didn’t scare them. I was a calm person and didn’t like violence…
Just then, I heard a slow clapping behind me.
“Impressive, I didn’t know monks had anger issues.”
I turned to see Tyler and his gang leaning on a desk behind me. He grinned, making a fuck-off sign with his finger, and Brian dragged Flora away. I rolled my eyes as they scurried away cowardly. Then I turned towards Tyler in anger.
“What do you want?” I sneered.
“Wow! Someone feels very good about himself today,” he snickered.
“You think you’re suddenly special after your little victory at the quiz?” James, one of his minions, replied.
“That little victory got your team a spot in the Harvard leagues… you affirmed it yourself at the gathering… and oh! You even begged to shake my hands,” I turned to Tyler.
“Eleanor broke up with me,” he announced, and I rolled my eyes.
“What does that have to do with me? I’m not into her; I’ve told you a million times… whatever happened at the library was a misunderstanding.”
“I know,” he snickered. I paused as his aura darkened as he smiled with malice, and I remembered that he must have figured out I wasn’t into girls because of the magazine.
“Eleanor left me because of you, and I don’t give two fucks because I can literally get any girl I want… she even called me a narcissist,” he said coldly.
“It’s not over, Asher. I want to know what the hell she saw in you that made her compare me, Tyler, to a low-life church boy that doesn’t even follow the values of his church.”
His last statement broke me. What if he exposed me? Mum and Dad would kill me… what would our members say? I would totally destroy everything my father has built.
“I’ve got dirt on you, High Priest, and even Jesus’ blood ain’t gonna wash it off.”
Revisiting the past. Asher’s grip on his phone tightened impulsively. The phone seemed heavier than usual, and his heart pounded so loud he swore Sean could hear it through the line. “Hello.” Sean’s deep velvet voice called out again. “H..hey Sean, it’s Asher,” he stammered nervously. “I know,” Sean replied nonchalantly, as if irritated by the mere sound of Asher’s voice. Asher too wasn’t spared; he also felt hurt hearing the voice that used to call out to him lovingly and teasingly sound so cold and emotionless. Asher was the reason they broke up. It was a messy one that left Asher in a very bad state—he even got a C for the first time. Sean was his first love and his first heartbreak too. He had been too ashamed to admit their relationship and denied him countless times. The straw that broke the camel’s back occurred when he denied Sean openly and even avoided him after one of his church members asked if he was friends with Sean—knowing his nature—and Asher had replied with, “
REVISITING THE PAST “Wait, let me get this straight… Someone sent you this email this morning, and you thought it was me?” Tyler asked. I collapsed on the nearest chair weakly… thoughts running through my head.“Yes” I groaned. I didn’t need a psychologist to know he wasn’t the one. Besides he isn’t that smart to pretend.“Why would you think that ?” He rolled his eyes, but I wasn’t in my mood for our exchange of words.“because of Eleanor, You said you had dirt on me… I thought it was you” I answered weakly.“Oh” He said suddenly.“So What are you going to do about it, I don’t think that picture will help your reputation at all, worse I don’t think your Dad would be pleased” Tyler added.“I don’t know “ I said shuffling my hair in confusion, where do I even start from?.“Well, not my problem” Tyler said nonchalantly tossing the book back to me. Selfish modafoka.“It will Tarnish Oakdale high too, it could ruin your teams chance in the league “ I revealed, “and my scholarship to Har

WHO?After the Weird Dinner with the Trevors, Mum, Dad and Tyler’s parents Proceeded to discuss about Donating to our church and politics.“Cariño why don’t you Show Tyler around We have a lot to discuss with Senator Trevor and his wife “ Mom announced.“You could show him your Impressive collection of basketball books in the Library” Dad added, before they proceeded to the sitting room, I glanced at Trevor leaning on the wall far off with his hands folded.“Are you coming or not?” I asked coldly. Tyler groaned dragging his legs behind me as I led him upstairs.“I swear if you tell anyone about this, I’m going hard on you!” Tyler said coldly as we climbed up the stairs.“Go hard on me? You’re not even my Type“ I scoffed opening the door of the library.“Ewww” He twisted his face in disgust.“What, You think the high priest doesn’t throw sexual jokes?. You and your team of bullies do that all the time” I replied leading him to where the shelves stood holding over a thousand books all o
HOVERING SINSI paced around my room, still holding on to my phone with sweaty palms. The photo on the screen felt unreal… It was a picture of me and my ex sitting on the couch shirtless, with his hands inside my shorts.I recognised the scene. It was at the Sterling’s house party back when we were in Tennessee. I had lied to Dad that we had a group assignment, and Mum had permitted me to sleep over. For real, past sins do haunt.“Who could have taken this picture?” I thought aloud. And Why?I was very cool with everyone in my old school, and the Sterling triplets were either gay or bi… They’d never permit or allow photos like this to be aired, let alone taken…“Cariño, our visitors are here, come join us at the table,” Mum called out.“Coming, Mum,” I answered, tossing my phone on the bed. I snatched my glasses, arranging my curly hair briefly before walking into the dining room.As I stepped in, I froze as my eyes met a very familiar pair of brown-hazel eyes. Tyler sat beside Dad. O
UNDER THE VEILSunday came very fast, and as the choir sang, I sat at my organ playing alongside them. Afterwards, Dad, in his white tuxedo, mounted the altar and began talking about the importance of holiness, how we were all expected to be Christ-like. I envied Dad a little… he was a bold, outspoken man, unlike me. I was more like my mum: quiet and shy. After the service, I watched our members greet him, bowing their heads as if my Dad was Jesus himself… He looked so righteous, so sinless… but everyone had flaws, didn’t they? Even though it didn’t appear so.I had caught a scent of Molly once from his drawers… Mum was practically clueless, but I could recognise that smell… especially after sniffing it once when my best friend in Tennessee brought them to our teens’ camp.Even Mum wasn’t a saint. Back at Massachusetts, Sir John, our very rich member, was very fond of her… it was questionable, especially after I stumbled upon their old texts.Everyone had a flaw, but mine, if exposed,
