The Cost of Secrets

"Brian!"

Asher's voice echoed through the house as he sprinted out of his bedroom.

He flew down the stairs, almost missing a step in his desperation. The front door stood wide open.

Outside, Brian was already halfway down the driveway.

"Brian, wait!"

Brian slowed for the briefest second.

But he didn't turn around.

"Please!"

A passing car cut between them. By the time it drove away, Brian had disappeared around the corner.

The BraceletThe three of them remained silent, staring at the photograph displayed on their screens. The bracelet was small, but there was no mistaking it."I know that's Eleanor's," Asher finally said.Tyler leaned back in his chair."I agree."Jane rolled her eyes in frustration."Then let's just ask her. It's possible she's our guy.""No."Tyler's answer came immediately.Asher nodded."Yeah. Why would she want to sabotage me? I didn't do anything to her."Jane frowned."She probably has something against you. You had a fallout with her, didn't you?""It's not enough," Asher replied. "Besides, how did she even get the bracelet? It's not possible she was there that night.""How would you know that if you decided to keep your mouth shut?" Jane shot back. "Why are you guys so scared to confront her?"Neither boy answered. They both knew why.Eleanor was the last person either of them wanted to deal with.Tyler had already had enough of the mess surrounding her. Slowly, Asher walked back inside. His laptop and phone still sat open on his desk, the video call untouched. Jane and Tyler stared at him from their screens. Neither of them spoke. Finally, Jane broke the silence. "Did you catch him?" Asher shook his head. "He left." Tyler sighed quietly. "I figured." Asher collapsed into his chair, covering his face with both hands. "It's over." "No," Jane replied immediately. "It is." "It isn't." "He hea

The First RevealThe soft chime of a new email notification shattered the silence in Asher's room.He frowned.Brian had only left a few minutes ago after their futile attempt to trace the anonymous sender. Asher hadn't expected him to become so invested in the investigation. Then again, Brian believed he was helping Jane. Maybe he was simply trying to impress her.Pulling his laptop closer, Asher refreshed his inbox.A new message appeared. His heart lurched.Unknown Sender. Not the usual email address.A completely different one.His fingers trembled as he clicked it open.I noticed someone has been trying to access my emails.Tell your little detective to stop wasting his time. His efforts are futile.I was willing to play along, but if your mole keeps digging... Dead Ends Saturday morning settled over Oakdale High with its usual rhythm. Students shuffled through the hallways, some rushing to class while others lingered by their lockers, squeezing in last-minute conversations before the first bell. Asher had barely stepped into the classroom when Brian waved him over. "Morning." "Morning." Asher slid into the seat beside him. "So?" he asked quietly. "Any progress?" Brian sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "It's proving harder than I thought." Asher's heart sank. "You couldn't get in?" "I could trace a few things, but whoever made the account knew what they were doing." Brian lowered his voice. "It's heavily protected." Asher frowned. "You think it's someone experienced?" "I don't know." Brian shrugged. "But whoever it is... they're careful." The teacher walked into the classroom before either of them could continue. Their conversation ended there. By lunch break, Brian still couldn't let it go. He sat in the back corner

The First Step Friday afternoon arrived with the familiar buzz of students pouring out of Oakdale High. By the time Asher reached home, exhaustion had settled deep into his bones. He had barely dropped his backpack onto his bed when his phone lit up. Tyler Calling... Asher answered on the second ring. "What?" "Wow," Tyler scoffed. "No hello? I'm wounded." "You'll survive." "I probably will." A small smile tugged at the corner of Asher's lips despite himself. "So," Tyler continued, "when's your genius friend coming over?" "As long as it doesn't clash with your tutoring." There was a brief silence. "...Yeah." Neither of them liked the idea of anyone discovering the arrangement. Especially Brian. "If Brian ever finds you sitting in my dining room solving calculus," Asher muttered, "I'm moving to another country." Tyler burst into laughter. "You're scared your homophobic best friend will think we're secretly dating?" Asher nearly dropped his phone. "Wh

It was unfortunate we shared a classroom; what was more unfortunate was the magazine he had seen in my backpack. He’d obviously suspect I wasn’t into girls. Revisiting the Past My grip on my phone tightened impulsively. The device felt heavier than usual, and my heart pounded so loudly I swore Sean could hear it through the line. “Hello.” Sean’s deep, velvet voice came again. “H-hey, Sean… it’s Asher,” I stammered nervously. “I know,” he replied

REVISITING THE PAST “Wait, let me get this straight… Someone sent you this email this morning, and you thought it was me?” Tyler asked. I collapsed on the nearest chair weakly… thoughts running through my head. “Yes” I groaned. I didn’t need a psychologist to know he wasn’t the one. Besides he
