FIRST KILL

last update publish date: 2026-07-21 08:48:06

The front door didn't just rattle. It groaned as the wood began to splinter under a weight that didn't care about physics.

[Warning: Hostility at the Threshold,] LUS whispered, the voice now a low, predatory purr. [Asset 'Ronan' is prepared for traditional combat. Recommendation: Exceed expectations. Finalize the Wraith Pulse calibration.]

I didn't wait for the door to fail. I didn't wait for Ronan to give the order. I stepped forward, the obsidian knife held low, and pulled the deadbolt myself.

"Audrey, wait, "

I wasn't waiting for anything anymore.

The door swung inward, and the thing in the hallway lunged. It was the neighbor from 4C, a man who'd once complained about my music being too loud. Now he was just a geography of gray skin and unhinged hunger.

Ronan raised his handgun, but I was already in the arc.

[Wraith Pulse: ACTIVE.]

The Flash hit me, but this time it wasn't a memory of death. It was a blueprint of the kill. I saw the heat signature of the creature's core, the fragile link between its spine and its brain. The air in the hallway thickened, turning into a lens I could move through.

I didn't stab. I moved past him with a liquid speed that smeared the orange hallway light into a blur. As I passed, I slammed my free hand against the creature's chest and let the Pulse go.

It wasn't a sound. It was a concussion. A wave of subsonic force erupted from my palm, shattering the creature's ribcage and sending it flying backward into the opposite wall with enough force to crack the plaster.

It didn't get back up. It didn't even twitch. It slumped into a pile of gray dust and static.

[First Harvest Complete.] [Reward: 20 Strength Points. 10 Perception Points.] [Skill Evolution: Wraith Pulse Level 2, 'Siphon' Unlocked.]

I stood in the hallway, chest heaving, but it wasn't exhaustion. It was a rush, jagged and electric, the kind that made the smoky gray in my eyes feel like it was burning from the inside. I looked down at my hands. Perfectly steady. I felt incredible. I felt like the world was finally starting to make sense, and some small, distant part of me understood that was exactly the problem.

"Audrey."

Ronan was standing in the doorway, gun lowered, finger still tight on the guard. He wasn't looking at the pile of ash in the hallway. He was looking at me, and there was something new in his crystalline blue eyes, not just recognition. A flicker of genuine, lethal wariness, the kind you don't fake and don't fully shake off just because the danger's passed.

"You're doing it again," he said, his voice dropping to that dangerous, subsonic rumble.

"Doing what." My own voice came out thinner than I wanted it to.

"Smiling," he said it like an accusation. "You just turned a man into a memory, and you're smiling like you won a bet."

"Maybe I did."

He stepped over the threshold, closing the distance until I could taste the ozone and the gunpowder, but he stopped short of touching me, close enough that I felt the heat off his skin, far enough that it read as a choice.

"That's the part I don't have an answer for yet," he said, quieter now. "Whether that's the Pulse talking or whether that's just you."

The question landed harder than I wanted it to. I didn't have an answer either, not one I trusted, so I said nothing and let the silence do what my voice couldn't.

His eyes moved over my face, cataloging again, the way he had over the drill and the boards, except this time I understood what he was actually measuring. Not whether I was capable. Whether I was safe. Two very different questions, and I watched him realize, in real time, that he didn't know which one he'd just gotten the answer to.

"You're not going to apologize for it," he said. Not a question.

"No."

"Good." But it didn't sound like relief. It sounded like a man filing something away for later, the same way I used to file every slight Jason handed me, except Ronan's version of filing looked like a held breath instead of a closed door.

He reached for my jaw then, slow enough that I could have stopped him and didn't, his thumb tracing the line of my throat, rough and warm and deliberate. My pulse answered before I told it to.

"You're not afraid of me," I said.

"No." His voice had gone low, closer to the sound the knife made when it hummed against the counter. "I'm afraid of how fast I stopped being afraid of what you just did."

I leaned into his hand, the contact sparking against the LUS current still running under my skin, and for one full breath neither of us moved, his mouth close enough that the space between us felt like its own kind of countdown.

"Don't get ahead of yourself, little ghost," he murmured, and then, deliberately, he stepped back.

Not far. Just enough. Enough that I felt the absence of his hand like a held note going silent.

"Why'd you stop?" I asked before I could decide; I didn't want to know the answer.

"Because I don't know yet if I'm choosing this or if something's choosing it for both of us." His jaw tightened. "I'd like to find out which before I do something I can't take back."

[Evolution Synergy Detected: 12%,] LUS hummed, sounding almost pleased with itself. [Dividend Status: Secured. Interest accruing.]

I pulled back too, the obsidian knife still humming faintly in my grip, and told myself the ache in my chest was adrenaline and nothing else. The first sirens were joined now by the sound of distant glass breaking, block after block, the city beginning to bleed out into the dark.

Ronan holstered the gun he'd never needed to fire and looked at me like a man doing math he didn't trust yet.

"We should move," he said. "Before something bigger than one Scout finds this address."

"Move where."

"Somewhere with better locks." A ghost of that almost-smile, gone as fast as it came. "And somewhere I can watch you do that again without wondering if I should be worried."

I picked the ash off the hallway floor with my boot, the last of the neighbor from 4C scattering into nothing, and didn't ask him to finish that sentence.

John had passed just before dawn.I stood by the window in Dr. Thorne’s surgical suite, watching the pale fog drift across the lower courtyard. Beside me, Somatic Pod Zero hummed on standby, its cool blue optical lights casting long shadows across the floorboards.Down in the medical bay, the atmosphere was thick with quiet, stoic grief. Melony sat on the edge of the cot, holding her husband's cold, frail hand between both of hers. Her face was pale, lined with dark circles, but her eyes were dry—the deep, numbing exhaustion of a woman who had already cried every tear she possessed over the long weeks in Node 03.Allen and Rhea sat tucked under heavy woolen blankets in the neighboring cots, clutching two carved wooden animal figures Eli had left for them earlier that morning. They were still far too weak to walk, their faces thin and pale, but their eyes tracked their mother with quiet, solemn awareness.Dr. Thorne stood near the foot of John's bed, pulling a clean white sheet over th

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   RESILIENT WOMAN

The morning sun broke over the high peaks of the mountain range, casting a pale, gold light across the stone courtyard of Apex. The air was crisp and cold, carrying the sharp scent of pine ash, wet granite, and the lingering steam from the keep’s lower bathhouse. After days of relentless tactical ops, ambush preparations, and subterranean expeditions, a rare sense of routine settled over the stronghold. But it was a new kind of routine—one defined by the growing weight of our expanded community.Down in the main courtyard, the work of unloading the Node 03 haul was in full swing.Dutch and Eli were backed up against the secondary armory doors with Flatbed One, systematically uncrating the high-capacity pulse rifles and perimeter turrets. Eli was practically vibrating with excitement, his hands moving with rapid-fire speed as he stripped down the factory grease on an automated defense processor.Yet, every two minutes, the boy’s dark eyes flicked over his shoulder toward the medical wi

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   LOOT

The heavy pneumatic seal of Node 03's inner bulkhead gave a long, mechanical hiss as Tristan bypassed the primary control circuit. Cold, sterile air, preserved under high pressure for years, rushed out into the corridor, carrying the sharp scents of ozone, high-grade coolant, and refined lubricants. The steel blast doors parted slowly, revealing the vast, shadow-draped expanse of the primary somatic core.LUS flared brightly across my retinas, illuminating the vault in brilliant, wire-frame gold.[FACILITY SECTOR: NODE 03 MAIN CORE.][POWER STATUS: AUXILIARY GENERATORS ACTIVE (14% STAMINA).][CONTAINMENT REPOS: SOMATIC FABRICATION / MILITARY HARDWARE STORAGE.][ALERT: RATION RESERVES DEPLETED TO 0.0%.]"No food," Tristan noted smoothly, his dark eyes sweeping over the dusty shelves of empty storage bins near the entryway. "Looks like our poor family scraped every dry crumb out of the mess hall pantry months ago.""They survived on emergency water filters and sheer willpower," I murmur

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   NEW CITIZENS

The heavy iron postern gate of the Apex stronghold creaked shut behind us as the early morning fog rolled off the high pines. With Vanguard Nine neutralized and the lower timber route secured, the strike team moved out toward the old granite quarry four miles south. The team was light, fast, and lethal: Dutch, Ronan, Tristan, and myself. Flatbed One was parked half a mile back in a concealed timber blind, leaving us to move on foot through the dripping, silent forest.LUS hummed a deep, resonant baseline against my optic nerves, feeding real-time topographical data and thermal sweeps directly into my field of vision.[TACTICAL MATRIX: ACTIVE.][TARGET PROXIMITY: GRANITE QUARRY / NODE 03 PERIMETER.][SECONDARY TELEMETRY DETECTED: DEEP-CRUST SOMATIC PING.][ALERT: UNEXPECTED BIOLOGICAL SIGNATURES DETECTED WITHIN SUBTERRANEAN SECTOR.]I paused on the lip of a rocky ridge, signaling for the squad to hold.Tristan dropped to one knee beside me, unslinging his lightweight submachine gun, hi

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   NODE 3

The lower holding cells beneath Node 01 were cold, damp, and smelled faintly of old iron and wet granite. Water dripped from the ceiling with a slow, rhythmic plink... plink... plink, echoing down the dark stone corridor.I descended the winding stairs, my heavy boots clicking against the steps with measured, Sovereign authority. I had refreshed after my time with Ronan, but the lingering warmth of his touch still anchored me, giving me a quiet, absolute confidence as I approached the iron-reinforced door at the end of the hall.Dutch was already waiting outside, leaning against the damp wall with his arms crossed over his leather coat, a unlit cigar tucked into the corner of his mouth. Ronan walked half a pace behind me, his massive frame filling the narrow corridor, a dark, dangerous calm settled over his broad features."How's our guest holding up?" I asked softly, stopping outside the viewport."Commander Voss is trying to keep his military discipline," Dutch replied smoothly, a l

  • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   PERFECT FRICTION

Ronan found me in the armory after he got himself cleaned up. He was at my side kissing me before I had the chance to ask him if everything was okay. The kiss deepened, swallowing the last of the battle’s residual roar. Ronan’s mouth claimed mine with the same unrelenting force he used to tear steel doors from their hinges—hungry, absolute, and without hesitation. His thick fingers tightened in my hair, angling my head so he could take more, tongue stroking against mine in a rhythm that sent heat pooling low and fast between my thighs.I arched into him, boots braced against the workbench edge, hands sliding from his shoulders down the hard planes of his chest. Sweat and residual blood still streaked his skin; the dark hair across his pectorals was damp, and when my palms dragged over it the friction pulled a low, guttural sound from deep in his throat. That sound vibrated straight through me.He broke the kiss only long enough to drag his mouth along my jaw, then lower, teeth scrapi
