[2] INTERVIEW

last update Last Updated: 2021-03-23 00:54:51

"It's Dayo, isn't it? He's trying to convince you to go back." She said as she walked over to be and knelt beside where I sat

“Girl what happened to our dream of a better future? don't show weakness now" Bola begged as she grabbed my hands into hers, I pulled away.

"You know how much I've wanted this job,” I admitted softly.

“But then again, at what price? girl. I feel so out of place here!" I said exasperated.

"Aramide, I want to ask you a question and you need to answer me sincerely," Bola said.

“Ask away,” I replied with a shrug

"What's more important? Your toxic relationship in Lagos? Or your new life here in London?"

Some questions leave a lot to be desired...

--------------------

Do you know what's worse than losing your pen during an exam?

It's arriving late to an interview, Good job Aramide! Note the sarcasm.

"Stop! Stop! It's here" I said to the taxi driver. He seemed to notice the urgency in my voice as the car pulled to a halt almost immediately.

I would have loved to admire the enormous building in front of me. But the heels I was currently wearing did not allow me to think straight. Plus, there was no time to waste. I tried running into the building but the security officer stopped me.

Like, dude no. Now was not the time.

"Your pass ma'am, I can't let you in without a pass" I scowled at him. I proceeded to dig through my purse and handed the man the blue pass that had been couriered to me the day before. I rushed straight into the halls where I was met with the queue. A long, annoying queue. I hate queues!

"Number 125" the receptionist called. She didn't look nice at all, she looked like she was being forced to be there, like a frustrated fellow. The woman was currently wearing a white shirt and had a tag attached to it, yeah. Her name was Clara.

I sighed in relief. Bola was right, my number hadn't been called. I was being paranoid for no reason, "I could do this, yeah, I'll be fine. I'm smart, intelligent, beautiful and I have the charm" I mumbled trying to convince myself. Besides, that's what Bola said. I repeated this pep talk for a few minutes till I heard the receptionist call my number, "No, I can't do this!" I mumbled panic setting in.

"Number 134?" the receptionist called out once again. it was then I accepted my fate. I walked my short walk of shame to the office, not after showing the woman - who must I add looked at me like I had murdered her kids - my ID card.

My fingers reluctantly crept to the door handle. For some reason, this felt like the most terrifying thing I have had to do for a while. I sighed, swallowing my anxiety and paranoia — I pushed the door and my eyes met him.

Clad in a black suit and black short hair with blue eyes was the man, who I assumed was my interviewer. His gaze pierced through me and I almost thought I was transparent. I had to remind myself I was here for a job interview not to check out the interviewer.

"Are you done?" He asked, his voice deep and Adam's apple visible.

"Huh?" I spluttered, coming out of my slight trance, only to realize I had been gawking at him. Great job Aramide, way to look like a weirdo on your interview.

Though, to be fair, he was gawking at me too!

"You aren't from here, are you?" He asked, as I stood there like a child being reprimanded. I had to remind myself I was me, Aramide Adegoke, I could pull this off, I will pull this off.

"Yes Sir, I am an African, I was based in Lagos, a prominent state in Nigeria, a country in Africa.” I recited. of course he wasn't stupid. He knew I was African, my melanin was more than enough!

"What's your name again? Are- Ae-"

"Aramide. Aramide Adegoke" I corrected.

“Have a seat," he ordered as he gestured to the chair.

"So, Miss. Adegoke, according to your Curriculum Vitae, you've worked in three different companies within a year, why is that?" he asked his lips pursed in a straight line

"In the file attached, I made mentions of the reasons, which included Harassment, Embezzlement and the third was because I traveled out of the country,"

"You seem like a pretty upright woman," He admitted. “But nothing is ever what it seems" He added as he looked at me through his eyelashes. Our eyes locked, I refused to break eye contact. I was never one to back down.

This man seemed to noticed this and spoke;

"So, what makes you think you are qualified to be the face of Damsel Diva's?"

**********************

"How was it?" Bola squealed as I walked into the house.

"I don't know B," I sighed as I dropped my bag and plopped down the chair.

"Don't be a bummer, I'm sure you did great!" Bola said. Her smile was wide. Again, she was beautiful. Flawlessly.

She was currently wearing a blue jumpsuit with a belt around her waist that made her hourglass figure very visible.

One thing about Bola was that no matter the situation, she would always find the positive aspect and emphasize it, never have I seen her down or sad.

She was my shield and according to her - I was her sword. She cuddled into me knowing I needed a hug but was too lazy to ask for it.

"I love you a lot, you know-" Before she could finish, a knock brought us out of our realm of thoughts. I looked towards the door nonchalantly and Bola chuckled getting up and mumbling a small "lazy bum" before walking towards the door.

The door opened and I waited for her to come but she never did, I could see her back view and she looked still.

"Bola?" I called out before deciding to get up and go see for myself.

"Bola why are you-" I tried to speak but then my eyes met him — the one person I was running from.

Dayo Adeyemi.

  • ARAMIDE   [197] THE END

“I never imagined things would end like this mom,” Aracely’s hands traced the table as she stared at the mirror. She was in her mother’s dressing room getting ready and the brown-haired girl was almost sure that she was going to fall into the nearest bed and doze off. Aracely had no one else to blame but herself though. The nineteen-year-old knew that it was a horrible idea to go out partying all night yesterday which was Christmas, knowing fully well her parents’ wedding was today. “You still took stunning” Aramide commented as she finished up on her makeup. Aracely bit her lip and smiled. The brown-haired girl pulled her mother’s chair back and knelt in front of the woman. “I’ve never told you this but…” she paused. Her breath hitched and her eyes watered with fresh tears. “Thank you” Aracely breathed. Aramide’s eyes glistened with emotion but before she could speak, Aracely took the woman’s hands into hers, “Thank you so much for being my mother for –“ “Aracely, what’s g

  • ARAMIDE   [196] LET’S REUNITE

“I didn’t believe it when I heard it.” Aracely said when she caught the reflection of a brown haired boy with green eyes at the familiar lake. Her fingers tugged on her white gown as she struggled to breath through her tears and the warm feeling in her chest. She took a step forward and ignored the pain that shot up in her foot when she hit a small rock. She could remember the night she had found this place.Or better still that she had fallen off.She had just left her home for fresh air after her small argument with Latifa- Latifa. Aracely still struggled to accept that she was gone. They had spent their best years together, struggling through the twisted maze they called life. Aracely knew Latifa didn’t deserve to die, no one did. But she was dead. She got she got straight to the head no freaking questioned asked and why? Because she was related to Aracely. Aracely grew up understanding the meaning of l

  • ARAMIDE   [195] It's finally over.

“You did it,” Bola whispered as she stumbled back, a bit of blood escaped her lips as her hands went to her stomach which had blood rushing out of it. At this point, everyone had frozen and Aramide let the gun fall out of her hands as tears filled her eyes “ I knew you had it in you.” Bola said as she fell. Aramide’s hands covered her lips as her feet remained glued to the ground. She felt someone hold her from behind and it was then she realized from the strong scent of lavender that it was Cole. Tears filled Aramide’s eyes and she couldn’t tell if it was tears of relief or sorrow, she finally regained control of her limbs and walked over to Bola. She knelt in front of her and said “I’ll never understand how and why you did this? I’ll never be able to accept that you have always been like this…” “A monster?” Bola replied hoarsely as a tear rolled down her cheeks, she was laid on the ground her

  • ARAMIDE   [194] I won't make the same mistake twice.

The first thing Aramide noticed as she walked down the aisle was Aracely’s wide smile, her daughter looked so pretty. She was wearing a short pink gown and had a white bow on her brown hair, it was tied in a ponytail, the wedding was to take place in the garden and Aramide had to admit that Mercedes had done a great job with the decorations, the aisle had been designed with roses, not too far ahead. Efrain stood by one of the two pillars that held up the small space where the couple was to stand under. The chairs that were set in the garden were white, the scent of thick lavender filled the air, it was Aracely’s favorite scent and Aramide could vaguely remember that the scent lingered on Cole too. Aramide mirrored the smile on her daughter’s face, she was holding hands with someone – Cole. Aramide wasn’t sure she remembered when they had gotten together, but over the past two months, they had gotten closer. Ar

  • ARAMIDE   [193] This is the right decision, isn't it?

Aramide sighed as she stared into the mirror, she was dressed in a white gown and had a beautiful tiara on her newly styled hair. Her hands traced the jewelry on her neck and rested on the space between the jewelry and her off-shoulder dress – where the amulet rested. The one that bound her to her daughter for so many years. It had been a few months since Daniel died. Since he was buried and since Aracely had broken down in pain. The first few months had been horrible, Aracely barely ate or moved around, she was confined to the four walls of her room. Mercedes was devastated. She refused to look or even speak to Aramide. She blamed the brown-skinned woman for her brother’s death and she wasn’t wrong, to be honest. She was right. Aramide could still visualize the compounded images or Mercedes’ eyes with dark circles and her lips pursed into a line. Cole’s deep stares and sighs. The way his hands slowly ran through his

  • ARAMIDE   [192] The alignment.

Bola groaned as she slowly opened her eyes, well, one eye. The thick smell of smoke filled her nostrils and she scrunched it up. She bit her lip as she glanced around, she knew something was wrong, yet she hadn’t been able to pinpoint what it was. She could recall going over the hospital that Aramide had been in to get Cole back. That man knew too many of her secrets and now, Aramide knew then too, she could also recall that Aramide had refused to let her take Cole. An argument ensued and things got a bit bloody from there, but how did this happen though? Had she been caught? Was she in prison? She desperately needed answers now. The blonde woman looked around from her place on the bed, she was slowly becoming aware of everything around her, the small night lamp beside the bed, the fact that the w
