Kael’s pov

I slipped behind Adrian’s house. The night air was cold, but my wolf barely noticed. Ghost was restless, his nose moved to the ground tracking that scent that has been bothering us. It was stronger now, like something inside this place was calling to us. Ghost wasn’t asking, he was clawing on the ground and growling, wanting to chase and claim. Calm down boy, this isn’t the right way.

I shifted back and walked back to my house with no clothes on, not caring who saw. My body’s been a weapon for a long time, and if people stared, that was their problem. Stepping into the lodge, I heard gasps from the living room. Dante and Jaxon were on the couches with some girls who shouldn’t have been there. They were wide-eyed, blushing, and staring at me. I saw hunger in their eyes, the kind I didn’t want.

If they were wolves, no one would care, but they weren’t. They were witches and were practically drooling. I ignored them, walking across the room with nothing to hide. My wolf liked the attention, but I didn’t care.

I slammed my door shut behind me, yanked open my closet, and grabbed clothes. The hypocrisy of what I was about to do hit me hard. Just minutes before, I had yelled at Misha for mentioning Adrian’s party, acting like she was crossing some line, and now I was dressing to go to that same party.

I pulled on black pants, grabbed a white shirt, and hesitated. Maybe I shouldn’t go but Ghost was pacing in my chest. He wanted to go, convinced the answer to that scent was waiting.

“Going somewhere?” Dante asked from the door, his arms crossed.

“I’m going out. Alone”.

“Alone? Don’t tell me you’re going back to Misha. Isn’t it time you end that? You have had your fun and your dad won’t approve if he finds out.”

I glared at him. One thing I won’t miss once I become the Alpha is people questioning my choices or my dad trying to control me from wherever he is.

“Not that it’s any of your fucking business, I’m not going to see Misha.”

I turned to the mirror, buttoning the shirt. I paused, I looked like I was going on a date, not heading to enemy territory. I ripped the shirt off, tossed it aside, and grabbed a polo and jeans instead.

Dante stayed put. “You okay?”

“Yeah, just hungry.” My voice was short.

He frowned. “Then order something and stay home. No need to—”

“Dante? Do me a favor and shut up,” I snapped.

I walked through the lodge, past Jaxon and the girls. Jaxon was already entertaining some of them, the smell of sex in the air is strong and irritating. I didn’t look at them, I walked right out the door. Outside, the night was cool. The scent hit me again, I inhaled slowly closing my eyes. God, I wanted to bury myself in it, sweet vanilla mixed with fruit, plus something deeper, like the forest after rain. Ghost snarled almost breaking through. I opened my eyes and they turn bright gold as Ghost pushed forward, impatient. My chest rumbled.

“Kael,” Dante said carefully, “your eyes. You’re losing it.”

I gritted my teeth and forced Ghost back. I’ve worked for years to control him. Now wasn’t the time to lose it, especially walking into enemy ground, that could practically start a war. I took a deep breath and looked at Dante seeing the worry on his face. I don’t know why he is so worried, I haven’t lost control of ghost since………

“Go back to your girls. I’ll be back.”

Maybe I was too harsh, but he just nodded and stepped aside.

I got to the mansion, the music is so loud it shook the walls, the laughter is louder, and the air smelled like booze and smoke. Typical Adrian. He threw parties for chaos, because breaking rules was his thing. He thinks he is bigger than the rules and can do whatever he wants to. I pushed through the crowd, Ghost was on edge, wanting me to move faster. The scent was close, I made my way straight to the kitchen, it has to be there.

The kitchen was quieter, but not much. Some vampire girls and omegas were stacking trays and refilling drinks. They looked up when I came in, and the room tensed up. They knew who I am. I looked around, checking the food, but nothing matched the scent. I frowned.

“What else have you got?” I asked.

One of the vampire girls looked down, holding a glass tight. “That’s it, sir.”

“It can’t be. The food smells a bit like vanilla”. The girls just shrugged. Fuck. If it’s not here, then one of the guests has it. I inhaled deeply, the air smelled like fear, but underneath it, there it was again. That scent, so sweet, warm and alive. Vanilla and fruit, like sunlight after rain. It snaked under the door, curling around me until I needed to follow it.

I breathed in hard, my vision going gold. Ghost surged against the control I barely held. I turned from them, ignoring their trembling, and went back to the hallway. The place was full of students doing stuff that would get them kicked out of school. Wolves, vampires, witches……it was a nasty mix that made my skin crawl. I pushed through, ignoring the stares, whispers, and the touches. I locked onto that scent, following it through the house, until it led me like a trail.

I followed it down the hall, through the lounge, and then I heard his laugh. Adrian. I see him leaning down, smiling as he talked to a pretty brown haired girl sitting on the couch. She is bent over a plate of food that’s looks bigger than her.

I inhaled deeply again and froze. My breath rushed out, it was her. She smelled like vanilla and fruit, like rain and earth, like something that felt like home. She smelled like……Human. No fucking way!

Then Ghost growled one word that made me panic.

“Mate”.

Aria's povLucien turns to me in confusion and I feel my ears turning red as I look away to avoid his eyes. I can hear my heart pounding. Why did I do that? Why do I care?He hasn’t said a word to me since Thursday when he saved me from Misha and held me through my panic attack. This time, I didn't imagine him....he was actually there and the way he had held me has given me sleepless nights since. By the time he finally brought me down his body and let me stand on my two feets, gym class had already started. He had taken me directly to my detention class, telling me I needed rest and he would give the coach an excuse for me. I was so grateful because there was no way I could have made it in any fight after what just happened. I mean a panic attack is enough to skip a class right? Right? Since then he hasn't made any appearance. From what I had seen, I can definitely say he and his girlfriend are fighting. The thing holding him back is no longer there, so why is he back to acting alo

  • ARIA: The Rise Of The Half Wolf Phoenix    Chapter 55: Placement day

Aria’s povThursday came quicker than ever. The placement room we convey in is shaped like a long theatre and the air is thick with magic. Students sit on stone pavements carved in neat lines. It looks ancient, like the floor has held centuries of secrets. I sit beside Adrian, his friends sitting behind him. He leans against the wall with one knee bent, his arms crossed like this is boring. All around us students gathered in clusters. Some of the species I recognize like the witches, the vampires, the wolves, even the omegas stood off to the side, Isla among them. I wave at her, smiling, hoping she would come over but she just gave me a look, then duck her head fast.My chest tightened. She has been acting weird ever since I started living with Adrian. Is she still annoyed that I didn’t take her advice and stay away from a higher rank? It’s not like I had any other option, she has friends to stay with and I don’t. Meanwhile, why hasn't our room been fixed yet? I have gotta ask about

  • ARIA: The Rise Of The Half Wolf Phoenix    Chapter 54: Another Panic attack

Aria’s povIt has been a strange morning. Now don't get me wrong, everything is normal as always, the halls, classes, the chatter of students. Except something is off. Students move away when I walk by, no bumping of my shoulders, no sudden shoves. They whisper and when I walk past they suddenly go quiet looking at me and then suddenly look excited and laugh like they know something I don’t. My stomach tightens uncomfortably. Is this because of the assembly yesterday? Because of Adrian’s arm on my laps and Lucien’s hand on my shoulder?Because I sat between two higher ranks like I belonged there? Were they planning something?Misha hasn’t even confronted me since. That alone added to my paranoia.By the time lunch came around I'm more jumpy than ever. My fingers were filled with holes from the needles in needlework class and I had to refold napkins and chairs so much in house keeping class until the girl beside me mutters that she’s getting dizzy watching me.At least I don’t get de

Aria's pov Across the hall I spot Misha and her clique. She’s staring at me with hatred sharp enough to cut into my skin. I shift down in my chair, but Lucien’s arm lifts and lands across my shoulders in a smooth, casual claim. Heat rushes through me. Adrian’s hand rests suddenly on my thigh and my lungs stop working. Are they insane? A low rumble rolls across the hall and we hear a growl so deep and angry it sends shivers down my spine. My gaze snaps toward the sound to see Kael with his eyes glowing gold, entering through the side doors with two men behind him. . His eyes are locked on me. They widen then narrow when he sees where I’m sitting. His jaw tightens so sharply I think I hear his teeth grind. He closes his eyes looking like he was visibly trying to refrain himself, then without a word, he moves toward the row of seats Misha sits on. She stood up touching his forearm but he pulls away. Not a big movement…….subtle but enough for me to notice. My own eyes wid

Aria's povI pace in front of the cafeteria after my duties. I'm so nervous because today is an emergency assembly day from the information I got from my tablet. Every student is supposed to be at the hall by 8:30 am sharp and last time I was late everyone stared at me like I was trash someone dragged in. I don't want a repeat of that.“Adrian. Come on. We’re going to be late again.” I whisper under my breath, checking the time.8:10am on the dot. I would have gone on my own but the assembly building is so far from the cafeteria and without any superhuman speed, no way am I going to make it……besides, Adrian offered to pick me up immediately after my duties, I even skipped breakfast because of it.All around me students sped off, the werecreatures speeding off with their super speed, the witches flying away while chatting and the…..wait did that guy just disappear? No way……A black sleek car stops in front of me, the window rolls down and I see Adrian with the lazy grin he always wears

  • ARIA: The Rise Of The Half Wolf Phoenix    Chapter 51: To say the words

Kael’s povI watch Adrian’s house from the edge of the woods the way I had done since Aria moved in. Adrian had looked right at me this morning just like he had done last night. Why didn’t he say anything? Does he know what this is about? Is he planning to use Aria against me?Come to think of it, he never did ask me why I came to his party that night. I have stood in the woods behind his house many times and I know he would have caught my scent anytime he comes outside. Last night, I had even stood on Aria's balcony, crossing into his territory without an invitation, which is an invitation to war. I had been waiting for a confrontation from him since, yet nothing came. I can never trust a snake like him not while I live. I know he is hiding something and I have a feeling he is going to do something messed up. Why else will he invite Aria to live with him, a higher rank in that big house…….“Let’s kill him”, Ghost urges in my head. And the fact that I agree with him makes me turn ar
