Chapter 1

I never dreamed that after seven years of marriage to Ettore Vitale, this would be how it ended.

That day, his mistress and I were both abducted by his sworn enemy.

"Don Vitale, your wife or your lover. You can only choose one!"

Viola Serra and I dangled from a crane at an abandoned dock, turbulent seawater churning beneath us. Veins bulged at Ettore's temples, his dark eyes burning with fury and hesitation.

"My people don't get left behind. I'm taking both of them!"

"Then, you'd better prepare two body bags!" The leader of the gang twirled his Browning pistol before pressing the muzzle against my temple, his voice vicious and mocking.

"Stop wasting my time. Three, two…"

"I choose Viola!"

Ettore's voice was cold as ice, but urgency bled through his words. My eyes went wide with terror, my mind going completely blank. Ettore looked at me, and for just a moment, guilt flickered in his gaze.

"Viola's fragile, and she's carrying my child. Nothing can happen to her." He paused, his jaw tight. "I'll send someone for you. I'll make this right when you get back."

The words hit me like a thunderbolt. My mouth opened, but nothing came out. Tears blurred my vision, but I started laughing anyway, wild and unhinged.

Ettore frowned, concern crossing his face as he glanced at me. The next second, he turned and walked away with Viola cradled in his arms.

I couldn't stop laughing, nearly crying myself dry before I finally calmed down. The irony wasn't lost on me. The man who once swore eternal vows to me could turn around and abandon me without a second thought for another woman.

Why her?

Ettore and I had been married for seven years. It was an arrangement, but we got along well. Our relationship was solid, or so I thought, until six months ago when Viola appeared.

She was pure and innocent, sweet and charming, stealing Ettore's attention effortlessly. Everything he used to give me, she took. I confronted him once and asked him why.

He looked me dead in the eye and told me it meant nothing, that she was just a distraction. I would always be his Donna.

But now, I was the one being thrown away.

The gang leader lifted my chin with the barrel of his gun, his voice dripping with mockery. "Signora Vitale, it seems you don't measure up to that woman in the great Don Vitale's eyes, si?"

I pressed my lips together and forced myself to stay calm. I needed to negotiate.

"I don't know what grudge you have with him, but killing me does you no good. Let me go, and I'll convince Ettore to give you that plot of land in the east district."

"He doesn't even care if you live or die. Why should I believe anything you say?" The words stabbed through me, tightening my chest until I could barely breathe.

"But you know what? You're right about one thing. Killing you really doesn't benefit me."

The gang leader pulled off his mask, revealing a handsome, sharp-featured face. He grinned wildly and untied my ropes himself.

"If Signora Vitale is willing, the Romano family would welcome you with open arms. Go home, think it over. That's how serious we are."

They left me there and vanished. The men Ettore sent arrived shortly after and brought me back. By the time I stumbled through the doors of the Vitale estate, I was still in a daze.

Ettore pulled me into his arms, relief flooding his eyes like he'd just recovered something precious. "Thank God you're safe."

I leaned against him numbly, a bitter smile twisting at my lips. Safe? Of course he was relieved. Everything worked out fine for him.

But the image of him choosing Viola over me kept tearing through my mind like a wild animal, ripping my heart to shreds and killing whatever hope I'd been clinging to all these years.

My head throbbed violently. I couldn't force out a single word. Then, everything went black, and I collapsed in his arms.

Six months later, I was at the Romano family's private island. Vittorio walked over with two glasses of juice and sat down on the lounge chair beside me."Ettore sent Viola away."I took off my sunglasses. "Sent her away?""To a sanatorium in Swossland. She had the baby, a boy. Ettore gave her enough money to last a lifetime on the condition that she never comes back."I nodded. None of that had anything to do with me anymore.Vittorio and I held our wedding on the island. During the evening reception, the butler suddenly approached and whispered something to Vittorio.Vittorio raised an eyebrow and looked at me. "Ettore's here, at the dock. He says he's just dropping off a gift, and then he'll go."I was quiet for a moment. "I'll go see him."Ettore stood alone at the end of the pier holding a small box. He'd lost a lot of weight, but his clothes were neat, and he'd regained some of his former composure. The vigor that used to light up his eyes was gone, though, replaced by a

I walked into the dessert shop, which still had the same familiar decor.Ettore sat in our old spot by the window. When he heard the door, his head snapped up.He looked terrible. His eyes were bloodshot, stubble shadowed his jaw, and his expensive suit was wrinkled beyond recognition. There was nothing left of Don Vitale's usual commanding presence. When he saw it was me, his eyes lit up. "Larissa, you came."I sat down across from him without touching the cake he pushed toward me. "Let's keep this brief, Ettore."The coldness in my tone dimmed his expression. "Vittorio planned the kidnapping, but he wasn't working with Viola. She just became one of his pawns."He knew about us, knew she was pregnant, and set the whole thing up."Ettore's voice caught. "He just happened to predict I'd choose Viola."I lowered my eyes. So, that was it.Vittorio had never said he planned the kidnapping, but he'd never denied it either. He'd left me the choice, waiting for me to come to him on m

After I returned to Vittorio's estate, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows staring absently at the yard outside.Vittorio walked over and handed me a cup of hot milk. "What are you thinking about?"I took the cup, my voice quiet. "I'm trying to figure out how seven years led to this."He was silent for a moment before sitting down on the couch beside me. "Sometimes, people only realize what they had after they've lost it. Unfortunately, by the time they understand, it's usually too late."I turned to look at him. "Sounds like you're speaking from experience."Vittorio smiled faintly, his gaze distant. "My mom left my dad the same way. She waited 20 years before she finally gave up and walked away. My dad spent the rest of his life searching for her. Even on his deathbed, he was calling her name."But what good did it do? The damage was already done. No amount of apologies could undo it."I nodded. I understood completely.Just then, my phone buzzed with a call from an unkno

Ettore stood in the coffeehouse doorway like a frozen statue. He looked at me, then at Vittorio beside me, his expression shifting from shock to fury."Larissa, what the hell is this?"His voice was dangerously low, each word forced through clenched teeth.I picked up my coffee cup and took a slow sip before looking up at him. "Don Vitale, can I help you?"The formal address made him flinch visibly, his expression darkening further.Vittorio leaned back lazily in his chair, amusement flickering behind his glasses. "Don Vitale, what a coincidence. Care to join us for coffee?"Ettore ignored him and strode straight to me, grabbing my wrist. "Come home with me."His grip was brutal, fingers digging into my skin hard enough to bruise. I winced, but before I could speak, Vittorio stood up."Don Vitale, Larissa is my guest right now. I'm going to have to ask you to let go of her."Ettore laughed coldly. "Your guest? She's my wife!"Vittorio raised an eyebrow. "If I'm not mistaken,

Ettore's body went rigid for a moment. "What do you mean?"Viola's voice dropped even lower. "The Donna is so beautiful. Even without power or status, plenty of men would…"Ettore pulled his arm away, his tone cold and sharp. "Enough. Larissa isn't like that."Viola flinched at his reaction, biting her lip in wounded silence. Seeing her tearful expression, Ettore softened. He pulled her into his arms, his voice gentler now."I know you're worried about her, but she wouldn't do something like that. I know her."But doubt, once introduced, had a way of growing.Over the next few days, Ettore mobilized his entire intelligence network to find me, but I'd vanished without a trace. It was as if I'd never existed at all.In his study, Ettore's expression was dark enough to conjure a storm. What made matters worse was that the Romano family had effortlessly seized the east district territory he'd just acquired. His men exchanged uneasy glances around the table. No one dared to speak.

The Romano estate sat on a hilltop in the outskirts, every corner exuding classical grandeur. The butler stopped in front of a heavy carved wooden door and bowed respectfully."The Don is waiting for you inside."I pushed open the door and spotted Vittorio Romano by the bookshelves. He turned around, dressed not in the black he'd worn that day but in a forest green velvet robe. His gaze was sharp and penetrating. He closed his book, a meaningful smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "Welcome, Signora Vitale. Or should I call you Signorina Larissa Ricci?"I walked calmly to the couch across from him and sat down. "The title doesn't matter. We're both adults here, Don Romano."He laughed, the sound echoing in the spacious study. "Fair enough. I need someone who understands how the Vitale family works from the inside, and you know Ettore better than anyone."I raised an eyebrow. "You want that plot of land in the east district Ettore's been after, too? What's in it for me?"Vi
