Chapter 2

Author: Radiant Wolf
I felt exhausted. "This isn't the first time you've made such a promise."

She grabbed my hand, her gaze both pleading and earnest. "I swear I'll do it this time, Zack! Just like before, you always had my back on missions. Zack, please, trust me one last time."

I looked at her hand that had once gripped mine through gunfire and danger. Then, I heard myself say, "Fine. One last time."

Emilia sighed in relief. "You should rest. I'll go make plans for the personnel and the route we'll take for tomorrow. Everything will be fine."

I turned and walked away without looking back.

Just as I stepped outside, I heard Dustin's low voice.

"Em, he was terrifying just now. Do you think he's already..."

Emilia's voice was soothing. "Don't worry, he's fine for now."

I returned to the isolation room and leaned against the wall, then slowly slid to the floor.

The burning sensation in my right arm was getting worse.

This was the second day since I was infected by the zombie virus.

According to the normal infection timeline, I should start showing signs of muscle stiffness and sensory decay by now.

But I wasn't.

Aside from the burning and occasional jolts of pain, my mind remained incredibly sharp.

The strangest thing was that I could feel something inside me stirring.

In the distance, roars of zombies echoed through the ruins.

The magnitude of it showed that it wasn't a small horde.

Without my mutative abilities to reinforce the camp's defenses, they wouldn't hold up much longer.

I clenched my fist, my nails digging into my palm.

Tomorrow would be day three.

Emilia, this would be your last chance.

The first light of dawn barely touched the horizon when I stormed out of the isolation room.

Those gray-white streaks on my right arm had already spread halfway up my shoulder.

A night had passed, and the air smelled even more rancid now.

I could feel the zombies closing in. Without me as the primary fighter, the camp wouldn't last much longer.

Emilia's door was slightly ajar.

I pushed it open and froze at the sight.

Emilia was curled up on the makeshift bed with Dustin lying beside her. Both of them were covered by the same blanket.

Dustin had his hand around her waist, while Emilia was resting within his arms in peaceful slumber.

For three seconds, my brain went blank.

Then, I exploded.

"Emilia!"

I rushed in and grabbed Dustin by the collar, landing a punch squarely on his face.

Screaming, Dustin rolled off the bed, blood gushing from his nose.

Emilia shot up, her face pale as she saw the scene unfold. "Zack! What the hell are you doing?"

I pointed at Dustin, my voice shaking. "What was he doing?"

Then, I continued shouting, my voice filled with rage. "You're really asking me that? Emilia, just look at the two of you!"

Dustin, clutching his face, scrambled to his feet and hid behind Emilia.

"I suddenly showed early symptoms of infection last night. I was scared, so I came to Captain Campbell to discuss the antidote..."

I laughed bitterly. "Did that require you two to share a bed? Did you need to hold someone else's girlfriend?"

Emilia stepped in front of Dustin. She was panicked, but mostly angry.

"Zack, enough! Dustin showed early signs of infection last night, and as the captain, isn't it my duty to take care of my team? We didn't do anything!"

I glared at her disheveled pajamas. "Emilia, do you think I'm a fool?"

Suddenly, her voice rose. "Look at you! You're paranoid and acting all violent! Do you even remember that you're vice-captain?"

I froze.

I remembered one time before the outbreak, in the infirmary at the military academy. My previous injury had flared up during a tough training session, and I ran a high fever.

Emilia skipped all her classes that day to stay by my side. She changed my towels, fed me water, and eventually fell asleep beside me.

"The research team has developed a preventive vaccine using your antibodies. After vaccination, it completely immunizes the hu

One, two, five, ten... Eventually, only Emilia and Dustin were left standing there.Leon walked up to me with his head lowered. "Vice-Captain... I'm sorry. I didn't speak up back then…""Now you're sorry?"He nodded. "I get it now. Some people aren't worth sticking with."I patted him on the shoulder. "Get in the vehicle."As the convoy prepared to leave, Emilia suddenly rushed over and grabbed my arm."Zack, take me with you. Please."I looked at her hand, the same hand that had once been my world. Now, all I felt was disgust."Let go," I said. She wouldn't. Tears streamed down her face."I was mistaken... I know I was. Please, give me one more chance. Just one last chance…"I shook her hand off."Emilia, I've given you chances. Three chances. The first time, you wanted to be impartial and gave the antidote to someone else. The second time, you wanted to be impartial and gave me the suppressant. The third time, you wanted to be impartial and kicked me out of the camp."I

"Relocate?" Emilia blinked. "Where to?""To Elysium Refuge. If you're willing to accept shelter."Emilia's eyes lit up.But in the next moment, Dustin came rushing out of the mall. His face went pale when he saw me."Vice-Captain?" He stammered. "You... You didn't die?"I looked at him.The look in my eyes made Dustin stumble backward, and he almost fell."I didn't die. Are you disappointed?""No… No…" Dustin shook his head frantically as he retreated behind Emilia. "Em, how did he..."Emilia shielded Dustin and turned to face me."Zack, I'm sorry for what happened before. But I had no choice. I had to prioritize the well-being of the whole team...""I understand," I interrupted her. "You had to be impartial, right?"Emilia's face went pale."But that's not necessary anymore. I'm no longer your team member, so you don't have to do that now," I continued. I turned to Iris. "Captain Rochester, what's the procedure for relocation?"Iris glanced at Emilia, then back

Iris looked at me. "Was that vice-captain you?"I didn't answer. Instead, I turned and walked toward the weapon rack."Are you going over there?" Iris asked.I picked up a modified weapon and checked the magazine. "I'm not going to rescue her.""Then what are you going there for?""To watch a good show," I said, loading the magazine smoothly, like I had done a thousand times before. "Maybe I'll collect some long-due interest too."The convoy raced through the ruins.Iris led the team personally, which consisted of twenty elite superpowered soldiers who were all heavily armed.I sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, watching the crumbling ruins fly by outside the window.Ever since the gray-white streaks had disappeared, my vision had become incredibly sharp.I could see maggots in the eye sockets of a zombie 300 yards away, and weeds growing in the cracks of the ruins.I could even see the rising black smoke in the distance. That was the location of the firefight

"Perfect... This is too perfect..." he muttered under his breath."The antibody concentration is 300 times that of an average survivor, and it's still increasing. Mr. Cohen, do you know what this means?""What does it mean?" I asked."It means we can mass-produce serum."Uriah's eyes were shining."Not suppressants, but real serum! An injection of this serum will clear the virus from the body within 24 hours, fully healing those with mild infections and stopping severe cases from worsening!"Iris stood by my side. "We need your cooperation in regular blood draws and participation in experiments. Of course, you have the right to refuse."I looked at her. "What if I refuse?""We'll respect your choice," Iris said calmly."But if you agree to help, we could have the first batch of serum ready in three months. Within a year, we could start mass vaccination."Three months.A year.I closed my eyes.I remembered the first day of the apocalypse when cities turned into hell on ear

When I woke up, I found myself lying on a clean hospital bed.Sunlight streamed through the window, and the air smelled of disinfectant.I was still alive.I sat up abruptly, looking down at my arm.The gray-white streaks were gone. My skin was intact, smoother, and more resilient than before.I clenched my fist, feeling unprecedented power coursing through my veins. This wasn't the sensation of my mutative abilities returning. It was evolution."You're awake."A woman's voice came from the door.I looked up and saw a tall woman standing in the doorway. She wore simple combat gear with her long dark hair tied back in a ponytail.
