Marla stepped closer to Jace, like what she was about to say was an abomination for the world to hear. Her expression darkened, and the sky smile that was ever present on old Marla's face was no longer there; it was replaced with something darker.

Jace's expression tightened, too. For all the time he had known Marla, he couldn't remember many times when her eyes held the look they held now. He could tell that whatever she wanted to say had to be dead serious. The mere thought of what it could be caused the wrinkles in his brows to deepen. He watched the old woman’s heavy steps carefully.

"Jace, I need you to listen to me carefully," she said. For one, even though she was nearly twice Jace's age, she never addressed him by his name. Something was unsettling in her eyes, like the weight of what she carried had become too heavy for her to bear alone. Marla had always been strong, dignified in her silence, but this… this wasn’t ordinary.

Thirty minutes had passed since Marla had walked out of Jace's room, thirty long minutes, but Jace was yet to find himself. Just one thought ran through his mind.Jace had changed out of his formal shirt and trousers into a simple black top and grey shorts. His body felt more relaxed now, but his mind was far from rest. The soft fabric of the cloth couldn't overshadow the ache in his bones or the storm in his mind. He was supposed to take a long shower to cool off his body from the rising temperature. Possibly even ease the tension crawling up his spine, but instead, he sat there with his elbows on the table. He was unable to muster the energy or will to step into the shower, talk more, or eat the food. His eyes stared at an empty space beside him, not that he was looking at anything specific. His mind repeated Marla’s words over and over. Luci had said she would carry out the plan. But what could this plan be? Was the morning incident a part of whatever plan she was up to? The quote

Her anger nearly clouded her judgment. She knew she didn't need to hit it, but she couldn't help it. As she stormed away from his office, there was only one voice speaking to her.Clara’s footsteps echoed sharply in the hallway as she stormed down to her office. Her fists were clenched at her sides with her lips were tight, and her breathing was uneven. The sting of humiliation was still fresh on her cheeks. When she reached her office door, she fumbled with the keys, her fingers trembled as she tried to jam the right one into the lock."Ughh!" She hissed in frustration. The metal refused to yield until she paused, took a sharp breath, and forced herself to calm down. After a few seconds, she tried again. This time, she slotted the right key in the lock with ease, and it clicked as she moved it to the side. The door creaked open, and she marched in, tossing her bag carelessly to the side of her desk, and immediately changed into her gym uniform. It was a fitted navy shirt with the es

The last words from Melinda’s lips and the look on her face made Clara suspect she was up to something—but what?Clara opened her mouth to speak, her heart raced as she prepared to explain herself, but before a single word could escape her lips, Melinda cut her off smoothly. She had a confident look on her face.“I caught her sneaking in just now,” Melinda said too quickly, her voice was still firm, like she had been planning them since. “She probably thought no one would notice. She pretended like she’d been here since morning.”Clara’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What?" Her mouth fell open, stunned at the bold-faced lie. “That’s not—”“Enough,” Mr. Landford interjected, his voice was stern and unforgiving. His gaze shifted coldly between the two women, then landed fully on Clara. “See me in my office. Now!”He didn’t wait for a response. He turned sharply on his heel and walked off, his footsteps echoed loudly through the empty hallway to his office.Clara stood frozen for a moment,

She stood for nearly a minute. She couldn’t move, couldn’t even react. She didn’t know whether she was scared or she was angry, but one thing was certain, she didn’t like it.Clara stared blankly at the screen of her phone, the weight of her boss's harsh words still lingering in her ears. She remained rooted to the spot outside her apartment door, clutching the key tightly in her hand. Her face was stiff, nearly unreadable. She had something between a frown and a look of shock pasted on her face.Ten minutes or nothing, he had said. The command replayed over and over in her mind. Her mind wandered to what her life would have been like if she had made the choices she wanted. She certainly won't have had to put up with a rude boss in a low-class job. The more she thought about this, the closer her thoughts drifted towards Jace. She shook it off, finally breaking free from her frozen state. Her body jerked into motion as she muttered, “We’ll talk about this later,” as if reassuring hers

Fear gripped him as he stopped sharply. The guilt of earlier resurfaced for a split second.Jace froze mid-step. The voice calling out to him sounded too familiar, sounded a lot like hers. His body tensed, and for a moment, the guilt he had been suppressing all day threatened to break out again. A cold shiver ran down his spine as he thought of what he would say to her.“I thought you had left?” he finally asked. His body remained still. He spoke without turning around; his words came out barely above a whisper. His whole demeanor seemed so strained. There was a short pause before the voice answered. It was calmer, gentler than Jace had expected. There was even a hint of amusement behind it.“What do you mean by ‘left,’ Alpha? You didn’t send me on any errand, did you?”Jace turned slowly. He was shocked when he came face to face with the surprised look on Marla's face. His family's chief cook. It wasn't Luci, not even close. His eyes scanned her features carefully. Then they locked e
