Chapter 2

Author: Jazz Knight
Early the next morning, Ian told me that that day was special.

In front of the maids, he carried me into the passenger seat of the car.

As the SUV jolted through the rugged forest terrain, I already knew that he was taking me to the hunting grounds deep within the pack's territory.

Halfway there, the car pulled to a stop. Ian grabbed his phone to step out and take a call at a distance.

While I waited in the car, I absentmindedly opened the glove compartment, where a pair of red lace panties belonging to another she-wolf was lying in plain sight.

I slammed it shut immediately, covered my mouth, and threw open the door, rushing to the bushes to retch.

Ian came over with his brows drawn tight.

"What's wrong?" he asked. "The elders have already arrived. The victory feast is about to begin. Can't you hold on until the party's over?"

"Okay."

I wiped the corner of my mouth and caught a glimpse of my pale face in the side mirror. A mocking smile tugged at my lips when I realized that this was the man I had loved for a decade.

His concern for me always came after his own interests.

I had actually thought that when he said it was a special day, he'd remembered it was the fifth anniversary of our bonding ceremony and the tenth anniversary of the day we started dating.

During the victory feast later that day, Ian held my hand tightly, displaying our intimacy and bond in front of every werewolf in the pack.

Praises and compliments quickly poured in.

My face felt stiff from smiling so much as I struggled to keep myself from recoiling every time our skin touched.

Ian seemed to sense my resistance, so he slipped an arm around my shoulders and began stroking my skin with his fingers.

"My Luna, you look beautiful today," Ian whispered.

He tilted his head, letting his warm breath brush against my sensitive ear.

In the past, a gesture this intimate would have made my heart race, but now, it just made me feel sick.

"You look handsome as well, my Alpha," I said.

I looked up into his eyes, which were filled with a deep, soulful look. I used to drown in the tenderness I saw there, but now I could only see my own reflection.

I looked like a puppet dressed in beautiful clothes, smiling exactly when she was supposed to.

As the party reached its peak, Ian took Perla by the hand and slowly led her to the center of the stage.

Everyone turned to look at me with curiosity written all over their faces.

It was obvious to everyone there that Ian's behavior toward Perla had crossed the line a long time ago.

Despite that, the smile on my face didn't falter for a second. I was busy calculating which escape route would get me out of there the quickest.

Before the celebration wrapped up, I approached Ian and told him I wanted to stay alone at the Sacred Spring that night to pray for the pack.

It was an ancient and sacred tradition. As the pack's Alpha, he was more than happy to have me handle the ritual on his behalf.

"I'll have Landon arrange for guards to stay with you," he said, his brows furrowing. He was clearly reluctant to let me out of his sight.

Even as he spoke, his eyes were practically glued to Perla, who was standing nearby in a striking red dress.

"That won't be necessary. Spending the night alone is the only way to show true sincerity," I reminded him. "You were the one who told me that, after all."

I raised my head and met his eyes.

After a brief hesitation, Ian pulled me into an embrace and kissed my forehead.

"Then come back as soon as you're done. I can't sleep without you beside me," he said.

I nodded, smiling.

Later that night, the rogue had a messenger deliver a bottle of medicine.

"Once you drink this, the bond between you and Alpha Ian will be completely severed, and it can never be restored."

I tipped my head back and swallowed the entire thing in one gulp.

My wolf let out a mournful howl as my heart felt like it was being ripped out of my chest.

The entire world lost its color and became a strange, grey place.

I was drenched in cold sweat as I lay beside the Sacred Spring, clenching my teeth against the pain tearing through my body.

Everything started to go black, and I vowed that this would be the last time I'd ever hurt for Ian.

Lena's POVWhen the door creaked open again, I was hunched over the desk, sketching a new tattoo design for a client. When an elder dressed in the traditional clothes of the Shadowmoon pack stepped into my shop, I didn't let a single flicker of emotion cross my face.I simply looked up, my gaze landing on his shocked and complicated expression. It was Rowan Eldrich, one of the few older members of the pack who actually had a sense of reason. He looked much older than I remembered, and the exhaustion in his eyes was impossible to hide.I set my pencil down, offered a polite smile, and gave him a formal nod."Are you looking for a new tattoo or a removal?" I asked. "Given your age and status, I'm afraid most of my designs here might not be your style. But I do custom work. I can come up with something until you're satisfied.""Luna—" he said, his voice hoarse and laced with a hint of caution."There's no Luna here," I cut him off, then turned around and started organizing the pig

Ian's POVThe wind had been howling for three full days.I stood before the massive floor-to-ceiling window in the pack's council hall, staring out at the horizon. The most beautiful pastures that once belonged to us were now marked with the banners of the Clawrift pack.Another winter had passed, and another piece of our territory had changed hands.Ever since Lena left, ever since that godforsaken bond was completely severed, a relentless agony had tortured me day and night. The pack healer told me that this was the curse one had to endure for betraying the destined mate who was chosen by the Moon Goddess. There was no cure unless she was willing to accept me again. But where was my Lena?"Alpha Ian…"Landon's voice came from behind me, cautious as always. That day, beneath that caution, there was a hint of hesitation.I knew that even he was afraid we wouldn't be able to hold onto the last stretch of territory our pack had left.I didn't turn around. My eyes stayed fixed

Lena's POVA year later, I was running a tattoo shop in the Silverbrook pack.I had inked tattoos for countless couples and lasered them off for just as many.People liked coming to my shop because I never asked too many questions about why they wanted a design. If they felt like talking, I'd listen, and if they didn't, I could stay perfectly silent the whole time. The members of the Silverbrook pack never pried into where I came from or why I moved here.To them, I was just Cassia, a tattoo artist with solid skills. After I finished getting the shop ready that morning, I flipped the sign to "Open" and sat at the front desk, catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror as I did so.The tattoo on the back of my neck had long since been turned into a ring of thorns. The scar underneath, however, still wouldn't fade completely, and whenever I touched it, the skin felt rough, almost like tree bark. Those years with Ian had been reduced to nothing more than this scar.Six months ago

Those words struck me like a bolt of lightning.A metallic taste welled up in my throat, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood onto the ground before I could stop it. I shoved Landon aside and stumbled toward the spot where the guard had found the body, desperate to see for myself.I needed to know what else Lena had done behind my back. The guards formed a tight circle around the charred body curled in the corner."Move!" I roared, shoving past the guards in my way.The body was curled into a fetal position against the wall, burned beyond recognition, but I could still tell that it had belonged to a she-wolf.My heart seized."Lena…"I reached toward the body with a trembling hand, but before I could touch it, I froze. No, this couldn't be her. Lena wouldn't just stay in the estate and burn to death. She was smarter than that.I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm down so I could use our mate bond to track her. But it was useless. I felt absolutely nothi

Ian's POV"Alpha Ian, we've searched this whole area. There's nothing here!""Same here, Alpha Ian!""We've been combing this valley for two days straight. There's nothing here but a few scattered stalks of wolfsbane.""Alpha, could the report have been fake? The emergency affairs department rarely verifies these things before sending them through. Are we sure someone didn't set us up?"Landon shot a murderous glare at the guard who spoke before turning his gaze back to me, not saying a single word.I couldn't wrap my head around it either. Who would go to such lengths to feed me a false lead?As I looked over my exhausted men slumped on the ground, a wave of unprecedented panic tightened around my throat like a vine.Damn it. Once I found the traitor, I would tear them limb from limb.Just then, a butler from the estate came running toward me, panting so hard that he could barely breathe. He collapsed to the ground with a thud, his voice trembling."Alpha Ian, the estate i

The pain dragged me under, and by the time I opened my eyes again, it was already noon the next day.I dragged my incredibly weak body back toward the estate, for I couldn't let Ian find out that I was planning to leave before the scheduled day arrived. The following evening, despite the pain in my body, I took the initiative to host a family dinner at the estate.Ian looked a little surprised, but he'd never turn down anything that made him look good.He sat at the head of the table, loudly sharing his grand ideas and visions for border security and the pack's future with everyone. All the while, his hand rested over mine.I felt several pairs of eyes constantly drifting toward me. Some showed respect or envy, while others held a faint sense of pity and amusement."To our great Alpha and our beautiful Luna, and to the eternal glory of the Shadowmoon pack. Cheers," one of the elders shouted, and everyone joined in for a toast.I raised my glass with everyone else and drank, tho
