Chapter 1

Those incriminating photos were a merciless bolt of lightning, shattering the perfect mate bond Ian Stormfang and I had pretended to have for five years.

My wolf howled inside me, yet I had no choice but to bear the crippling pain alone.

He had severed our mind link long ago.

Even now, he was likely with his Omega, basking in the presence of her youth.

At the edge of the Shadowmoon pack's territory, in a valley overgrown with wolfsbane, the faint glow of a cigarette flickered once before it died.

"Three times the market rate," the rogue said. "You're in too much of a hurry. Besides, no one wants to be on the receiving end of the Shadowmoon pack Alpha's rage."

I pulled out two gold bars without hesitation.

"Deal. Within three days, I expect the new identity and the car to be ready."

The scar-faced rogue nodded, but he didn't take the gold right away. Instead, he fixed me with a hard stare.

"Lena, I have to be blunt. Once you leave, you can't come sneaking back. None of the packs around here can handle Ian in a fight. I don't want innocent people getting hurt," he said.

"Neither do I," I replied. "As long as I can leave, I'll never step foot in the Shadowmoon pack's territory again."

Satisfied by my resolve, the rogue took the money and disappeared down the valley.

I reached down and plucked several stalks of wolfsbane, crushing them between my fingers before applying its juice to the skin of my neck.

Five years ago, Ian and I had agreed to leave matching marks on each other's bodies as a testament to our love.

On the night our bonding eremony ended, I had the mark he left tattooed over with a silver crescent moon.

Now, I clenched my teeth and let the wolfsbane seep into my skin, burning its way to my wolf.

My wolf grew weakened, and the skin on my neck became raw and irritated. Still, no matter how much it hurt, it couldn't compare to what Ian had done to me.

When I returned to the estate, the home where Ian and I had lived for five years, his nauseating scent seemed to linger in every corner.

Three more days.

In three days, I would be out of this cage built from lies and betrayal.

Just then, a jaunty whistle echoed from the stairs.

Ian was home.

I picked up a book and leaned against the headboard.

"Lena, you're still awake?"

He smiled as he approached the bed, leaning down with practiced ease to press a kiss onto my forehead.

Just as his lips were about to touch my skin, I tilted my head slightly, lifting a hand to tuck a stray lock of hair behind my ear.

"I couldn't sleep. Why did you come home so late?" I said, casting him a glance, my smile soft and gentle.

He had clearly showered elsewhere, but the sickly sweet scent of the Omega, Perla Blackwood, still lingered.

My stomach churned as a wave of nausea surged up my throat, but I quickly forced it down.

"There have been a few skirmishes at the border, so I was discussing it with the elders."

Ian straightened and sat on the edge of the bed. He began idly twirling the ends of my hair around his finger. "I'm just glad I have you here, Lena. You're like an anchor, holding me steady."

An anchor?

A laugh nearly escaped me.

So that was all our relationship was to him—an anchor fixed in place that he didn't have to bother maintaining, which he could drop or haul up whenever it suited his convenience.

His fingers brushed the back of my neck by accident, grazing the thick layer of gauze that now covered the place where my silver crescent tattoo used to be.

Ian frowned, and a chill crept into his eyes.

"Lena, your tattoo…"

"I burned myself while I was studying herbs with the healer," I lied.

I forced my lips into a curve and uttered the line I had rehearsed a thousand times in my head, "You're my light, too, Ian."

Inside me, however, there was no light at all. There was only a vast, frozen emptiness.

At that moment, his phone flickered to life on the nightstand.

There was no sound, but the specific pattern of the flashing light told me it was a priority notification, reserved only for someone special.

Even I had never been granted such a privilege.

Ian moved quickly, snatching the phone and pocketing it after a single glance, but I had already seen the nauseating contact name on the screen—"My Rose".

He was rattled. A frantic edge crept into his voice, one he didn't even seem to notice.

"Sorry, Lena. I just remembered an urgent message I need to send regarding tomorrow's border patrol deployment. You should go to sleep. I'll be right back."

He hurried into the adjoining study and shut the door.

Silence returned to the bedroom.

The hollow smile vanished from my face. I crossed the room barefoot to the floor-to-ceiling window and let the moonlight wash over me.

Yet, it failed to give me the peace and power I once found in it, offering nothing but a piercing shiver.

Three days.

I repeated the words silently.

In three days, Lena Wolfhart, the Luna of the Shadowmoon pack, would be dead.

Lena's POVWhen the door creaked open again, I was hunched over the desk, sketching a new tattoo design for a client. When an elder dressed in the traditional clothes of the Shadowmoon pack stepped into my shop, I didn't let a single flicker of emotion cross my face.I simply looked up, my gaze landing on his shocked and complicated expression. It was Rowan Eldrich, one of the few older members of the pack who actually had a sense of reason. He looked much older than I remembered, and the exhaustion in his eyes was impossible to hide.I set my pencil down, offered a polite smile, and gave him a formal nod."Are you looking for a new tattoo or a removal?" I asked. "Given your age and status, I'm afraid most of my designs here might not be your style. But I do custom work. I can come up with something until you're satisfied.""Luna—" he said, his voice hoarse and laced with a hint of caution."There's no Luna here," I cut him off, then turned around and started organizing the pig

Ian's POVThe wind had been howling for three full days.I stood before the massive floor-to-ceiling window in the pack's council hall, staring out at the horizon. The most beautiful pastures that once belonged to us were now marked with the banners of the Clawrift pack.Another winter had passed, and another piece of our territory had changed hands.Ever since Lena left, ever since that godforsaken bond was completely severed, a relentless agony had tortured me day and night. The pack healer told me that this was the curse one had to endure for betraying the destined mate who was chosen by the Moon Goddess. There was no cure unless she was willing to accept me again. But where was my Lena?"Alpha Ian…"Landon's voice came from behind me, cautious as always. That day, beneath that caution, there was a hint of hesitation.I knew that even he was afraid we wouldn't be able to hold onto the last stretch of territory our pack had left.I didn't turn around. My eyes stayed fixed

Lena's POVA year later, I was running a tattoo shop in the Silverbrook pack.I had inked tattoos for countless couples and lasered them off for just as many.People liked coming to my shop because I never asked too many questions about why they wanted a design. If they felt like talking, I'd listen, and if they didn't, I could stay perfectly silent the whole time. The members of the Silverbrook pack never pried into where I came from or why I moved here.To them, I was just Cassia, a tattoo artist with solid skills. After I finished getting the shop ready that morning, I flipped the sign to "Open" and sat at the front desk, catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror as I did so.The tattoo on the back of my neck had long since been turned into a ring of thorns. The scar underneath, however, still wouldn't fade completely, and whenever I touched it, the skin felt rough, almost like tree bark. Those years with Ian had been reduced to nothing more than this scar.Six months ago

Those words struck me like a bolt of lightning.A metallic taste welled up in my throat, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood onto the ground before I could stop it. I shoved Landon aside and stumbled toward the spot where the guard had found the body, desperate to see for myself.I needed to know what else Lena had done behind my back. The guards formed a tight circle around the charred body curled in the corner."Move!" I roared, shoving past the guards in my way.The body was curled into a fetal position against the wall, burned beyond recognition, but I could still tell that it had belonged to a she-wolf.My heart seized."Lena…"I reached toward the body with a trembling hand, but before I could touch it, I froze. No, this couldn't be her. Lena wouldn't just stay in the estate and burn to death. She was smarter than that.I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm down so I could use our mate bond to track her. But it was useless. I felt absolutely nothi

Ian's POV"Alpha Ian, we've searched this whole area. There's nothing here!""Same here, Alpha Ian!""We've been combing this valley for two days straight. There's nothing here but a few scattered stalks of wolfsbane.""Alpha, could the report have been fake? The emergency affairs department rarely verifies these things before sending them through. Are we sure someone didn't set us up?"Landon shot a murderous glare at the guard who spoke before turning his gaze back to me, not saying a single word.I couldn't wrap my head around it either. Who would go to such lengths to feed me a false lead?As I looked over my exhausted men slumped on the ground, a wave of unprecedented panic tightened around my throat like a vine.Damn it. Once I found the traitor, I would tear them limb from limb.Just then, a butler from the estate came running toward me, panting so hard that he could barely breathe. He collapsed to the ground with a thud, his voice trembling."Alpha Ian, the estate i

The pain dragged me under, and by the time I opened my eyes again, it was already noon the next day.I dragged my incredibly weak body back toward the estate, for I couldn't let Ian find out that I was planning to leave before the scheduled day arrived. The following evening, despite the pain in my body, I took the initiative to host a family dinner at the estate.Ian looked a little surprised, but he'd never turn down anything that made him look good.He sat at the head of the table, loudly sharing his grand ideas and visions for border security and the pack's future with everyone. All the while, his hand rested over mine.I felt several pairs of eyes constantly drifting toward me. Some showed respect or envy, while others held a faint sense of pity and amusement."To our great Alpha and our beautiful Luna, and to the eternal glory of the Shadowmoon pack. Cheers," one of the elders shouted, and everyone joined in for a toast.I raised my glass with everyone else and drank, tho
