Chapter 3

作者: Little Hedgehog
I was absolutely ecstatic. Counting down the days, I realized I only had one week left.

Right then, Melina barged in. "Come party with me, Maeve!"

Looking at her skimpy outfit and full face of makeup, I instinctively refused, "No, I'm busy."

I had to earn money. Establishments like the ones she visited were beyond my means.

Melina, however, closed the distance between us. "Is that so? Are you really busy, or are you trying to sever ties with me? Oh, you're actually planning to study abroad?"

Realizing she had seen my laptop screen, I hurriedly closed it. Meeting her mocking smile, I confessed, "Yes, I'm going to study abroad and leave your family! That way, you don't have to worry anymore. I won't do anything to upset you."

Melina stared intently at me. "I hope you keep your word."

With that, she spun on her heel and left.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

However, half an hour later, the door to the attic was kicked open. Elio stormed in, followed by Melina, whose eyes were teary. In a heartbeat, a wave of unease rose in my chest.

Elio fumed, "I warned you not to mess with Melina, yet you actually dared to steal from her!"

I froze when I heard that. "I did not!"

"That was a birthday gift from Mom, Mae. Please, just give it back to me!"

Melina's accusation caught me off guard. Shaking my head, I denied, "I don't have it!"

The second the words left my lips, Elio raised his hand and slapped me across the face. The blow left one side of my head ringing, and the metallic tang of blood flooded my mouth.

"Leave no stone unturned!" he ordered the housekeepers. It didn't take long for them to turn the attic upside down.

Soon, someone yelled, "I found it!"

I was dumbstruck as a necklace was pulled from beneath my bed. Panic seized me. I instinctively looked at Melina, and the moment she flashed me a triumphant smile, I knew she had framed me yet again.

"I told you if you make another mistake, you can pack your bags and get out of our house!"

"You thief, you don't deserve to be our child!"

Mom and Dad were livid. Without listening to my explanations, they locked me in the basement and starved me for three days.

I pounded on the door and cried until my voice was raw. I only had a few days left before I was supposed to go abroad. I couldn't afford to miss this chance.

But my cries fell on deaf ears.

When they finally released me after three days, the world was spinning before my eyes. Elio was standing before me with a hardened expression. "Consider yourself lucky to be alive. Pack your things and get the hell out right now!"

He tossed me a suitcase. "You're not allowed to take a single thing that belongs to our family."

As soon as his words sank in, I dragged myself upstairs. I didn't even use his suitcase. I gathered nothing but my own clothes and my laptop. I wanted nothing more to do with them.

Fortunately, there was still time.

When I walked out of the Langston residence, the sun was shining brightly, but my emotions were in a tangled mess.

Mom and Dad's car happened to pull into the driveway right then. Melina was sandwiched between them, giggling as she held a dozen luxury shopping bags.

"Where are you off to, Mae?" she asked with an innocent look that made me feel utterly sick to my stomach.

Before I could utter a word, Elio responded apathetically, "Who cares where she's going? The point is, she's banned from this house. You can crash at the apartment on the west side of the city for now. Just get out of our sight!"

I kept my head down and remained silent.

Mom chimed in, "That's probably for the best. At the end of the day, I wasn't the one who raised you. No wonder you have no feelings for us. God knows who taught you to be so deceitful and light-fingered!"

After hearing that, I left decisively. I completed the necessary procedures and boarded the plane.

I couldn't wait a single second longer. I wanted the Langstons out of my life for good. Leaving them behind was the only way I'd ever get a fresh start.

Once we were airborne, I rested my head against the window, gazing at the clouds. Multiple emotions swirled inside my chest. At long last, I was free.

However, the very next second, violent turbulence rocked the plane. In the blink of an eye, the sky outside went dark, swallowed by jagged streaks of lightning. The cabin plunged into absolute chaos as the oxygen masks dropped down right in front of my face.

I was dumbfounded. While I was still reeling from the shock, the passengers around me erupted into hysterical sobs, frantically pulling out pens and paper to write their final words.

Consequently, I whipped out a pen, but I had absolutely no one to write to. After a second of hesitation, I jotted down a line, stuffed it into my pocket, and my stomach dropped as the plane went into a steep descent.

Following a deafening crash, the world went dark, and I blacked out.

Staring at that familiar, massive crater, I let out a long, heavy sigh. In a flash, my body felt lighter, and I realized I could finally leave. Without a moment's hesitation, I spun around and left. Elio's anguished roar echoed behind me, "Maeve Langston!"It seemed he had finally figured out the reason behind my departure. Fortunately, when I walked out that door, I had taken everything that belonged to me. I hadn't touched anything that wasn't mine. The only things they recovered were that platinum ring and my farewell letter. That was all that was left of me. …After returning home, Elio stumbled his way up to the attic. Spotting the suitcase I had left behind, he dissolved into tears and fell to his knees with a heavy thud. Mom, on the other hand, wailed, "I had no idea Maeve endured so much abuse under our roof. It's all our fault! Where's Melina, that bitch? Bring her here right now and make her beg Maeve for forgiveness on her knees!" The three of them brought Melina

When the officer handed them the video, Elio's expression darkened more than everyone else's. It was the surveillance footage from the swimming pool. Melina had deliberately jumped into the water, only to turn around and frame me. The very next second, Elio kicked me into the pool. Because I was on my period and I was forced to spend most of the night freezing in the water, I eventually passed out. Confronted with the truth, his composure cracked. "Melina… Why did you lie to me?"After watching the footage, Mom and Dad were enraged. Both of them dragged Melina over and slapped her more than a dozen times before kicking Elio out of the living room. "Monsters… Both of you are literal monsters! Oh, my poor Maeve!"The officers stepped in and immediately took Melina into custody. Ever since I suffered at Melina's hands the first time, I had walked on eggshells every single time I interacted with her. It was just a shame that when I finally caught her on camera the first time and sh

I hovered right next to Elio, staring him down. "You're a piece of shit, Elio!"Unfortunately, they couldn't hear me. If they could, I would've slapped the living daylights out of him. Looking at Melina's face, I pondered for a moment and raised my hand, swinging it down hard. Regrettably, it only stirred up a gust of wind and had no effect at all. After finishing their meal, Elio and Melina headed back home. Upon learning that I hadn't gone to the apartment, Mom and Dad were absolutely livid. "We never should have brought her back in the first place! We should have beaten some manners into her the moment she set foot in this house. Perhaps she wouldn't be such a headache now!" "Where could a young lady like her even go? Hurry up and track her down! Lest she meet with some mishap and embarrass us."Elio readily agreed, "I know, Mom. Don't worry. I will make sure she comes back."Just then, the doorbell rang. The butler answered the door, only to be met by the sight of severa

A split second later, Melina scrolled past it. If the siblings had lingered for even a second longer, perhaps they would have seen that among the personal effects displayed by the search and rescue personnel was a platinum ring that belonged to me. Mom had given it to me shortly after I returned home. She'd told me she was sorry for all the hardships I'd been through, and since I had spent so many years away from her, she wanted me to have it. She'd explained that all the children in the Langston family owned one, and mine even had my name engraved on it.I'd accepted her goodwill, only for Melina to dissolve into tears, sobbing about how guilty she felt. At the time, I was rooted to the spot in sheer awkwardness, while everyone rushed to comfort Melina, completely leaving me out in the cold. As soon as Elio wrapped up his work, he took Melina to the performance, and I had no choice but to tag along. To be honest, I wasn't all that interested in stage plays, but Melina loved the

My body felt as light as air. Looking down at the massive crater on the ground, along with the severed limbs strewn everywhere and the burning wreckage of the aircraft, I realized that the plane I was on had crashed. Not a single soul had made it out alive. I was about to take a closer look when my body floated upward against my will. In the blink of an eye, I found myself right beside Elio. The moment I saw him, I couldn't help but knit my brows tightly in sheer disappointment. I had foolishly thought that after dying, I'd be able to drift across the world and at least take in some beautiful scenery. Yet, I had been brought right back to Elio's side.At that moment, they still had no idea that I was already dead. Elio sat in his office reviewing documents and casually asked, "Has she arrived at the apartment?"His assistant shook his head. "I'm not sure. I'll check right away.""Don't bother. It's not like she has anywhere else to go besides that apartment anyway. She threw a
