Susanna

The days bled into each other like ink in water, each one just as shapeless and miserable as the last. I couldn’t tell whether it had been two days or twenty since my face, my future, had been taken from me. Time felt meaningless when all I could do was stare at blank walls and feel the weight of bandages against my skin.

I didn’t sleep much. I didn’t speak unless I had to. I barely ate. Even when Conrad was around - he had now become so quiet and careful around me - I found it hard to pretend I was human, let alone the version of myself I used to be. I knew I wasn’t. Whatever made Susanna Remington who she was had been carved off with the skin of her face. What was left behind was just an echo.

After my breakdown in the hallway, Conrad had assigned a nurse to me, Florence.

He said it was for my sake, that he didn’t want me to be alone when he wasn’t there, but it felt more like an insult, as if he was assigning a babysitter to me. Florence was polite, but in the most cli

AlexanderThe moment I stepped into the lobby of Ridgewell Wellness Facility, I was greeted by the soft scent of eucalyptus. The woman at the front desk looked up from her computer screen, and her face lit up with recognition.“Mr. Marks,” she greeted brightly, calling me by the name on the identity papers I used whenever I came here. I offered her a smile in return, dipping my head slightly in acknowledgment. Her silver hair was neatly tucked into a low bun, and her powder-blue uniform hugged her frail frame. Despite the years on her face, her smile hadn’t dulled.“Good afternoon,” I said, approaching the desk. “How is Simon doing today?”The nurse practically beamed. “Just getting better day and day,” she said cheerfully, then leaned in slightly as if sharing a secret. “Between the two of us, I think he might just be getting fully discharged soon. The doctors haven’t confirmed it, but I have a hunch.”I smiled. “That would be welcome news.”And I meant it, even though I still hadn’t

Susanna Conrad’s hand gave mine a warm, reassuring squeeze before he gently stepped back. A breath hitched in my throat as I watched Dr. Shah step closer. Her gaze was warm as she looked at me, but I was dreading feeling it on me when she would remove these bandages and see how truly terrible I looked. But I couldn’t flinch. I had to be brave. If I wanted to be fixed, I had to endure this part. “Susanna,” she said, her voice soft and professional. “How are you feeling today?” I swallowed hard, staring up at her. “I just want this nightmare to be over,” I said quickly, honestly. “As soon as possible.” She nodded with quiet understanding and turned to Dr. Ng. They quickly exchanged subtle glances and shared a brief nod. “Alright,” she said, turning back to me. “I’m going to take off your bandages so we can inspect the damage. Is that okay?” I nodded again. My chest rose and fell rapidly and I couldn’t deny that there was panic beginning to burn under my ribs. I told myself this

A pair of hands closed around my shoulders, firm but not rough. I shrieked and thrashed at first, shoving against them with all the fury I had left in my exhausted body.“Don’t touch me!” I rasped angrily, hating how small my voice sounded. “Susanna,” a familiar voice said. "Hey, it's me." My body went still. “It's me,” he said again. "Calm down." This time, I recognized the voice. It was Conrad. My breath hitched. I froze, still hiding my face behind my hands, but I stopped fighting him. My chest rose and fell in fast, jagged motions as he gently turned me away from the gawking faces in the hallway. Wordlessly, I let him guide me, his arm steady against my back, back into the cold, too bright hospital room.My knees buckled the second I reached the edge of the bed. I sat down hard, still covering my face, still breathing like I’d just escaped a nightmare. But I hadn’t. I was still inside it. I was the nightmare.A nurse tried to follow us in, and I could hear feet hesitantly shuffle

SusannaWhen I opened my eyes, I was alone. The room was too bright. The scent of antiseptic hit me first and for a moment I couldn’t move. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I couldn’t feel my body. Then I tried to raise my hand but I couldn’t even feel my fingers. I stared down at them. My hands were wrapped with thick layers of gauze bundled tightly around them. Panic slithered into my chest, curling like a snake around my heart. I couldn’t feel my fingertips. I tried again, harder this time, to move them. Still nothing. I stared harder, squinting at the bits of skin not fully covered by the gauze. What I saw made bile rise in my throat. The skin there was rubbery and discoloured, like melted wax.My breath stuttered out of me in s

AlexanderThe air outside the office building was cooler than I had expected. As I stepped through the front doors, the front desk secretary, Laura, offered her customary goodnight. I returned her greeting with a polite nod, though my thoughts were already miles away.I was supposed to meet Roxy tonight, as I had been doing for a while now, and ask how Abigail was doing. It was my way of finding out the things that could be worrying Abigail she might never tell me, even as ‘Daniel’. It was a tad foolish, I knew, and if Abigail ever discovered I was keeping tabs on her like this, she would be furious. She would see it as a betrayal of her independence and another way I was trying to interfere. And maybe she'd be right. But tonight, Roxy would have to wait. Something else had come up, something that had been haunting my mind for weeks.

Emma didn’t look back as she hurried down the hallway, her footsteps light as a feather as she headed away from the room she’d locked Susanna in. There was a tightness in her chest as she passed other beauty treatment rooms, hearing low music come from beyond the doors. Her heart settled more the further she got away from the muffled screams behind the locked treatment room, until it barely made a dent in her focus. She had rehearsed every second of this, down to the order in which she would remove her uniform, the path she would take to the locker room, even the exact time she had before anyone noticed Susanna was missing.Twenty minutes, maybe less. That was her window. Her pulse raced, but it wasn’t fear that gripped her, it was adrenaline. A pulsing, giddy energy was buzzing under her skin as she ducked into the staff only corridor and pushed open the door to the changing room. She didn’t bother turning on the lights; she knew where Poppy’s locker was. She had chosen it deliberate

SusannaThen she tilted her head and met my gaze, adding, “Though it won’t be hard. You already have wonderful skin.”It was obvious flattery, but it worked. My lips curved in the smallest smirk. At least she knew how to talk to a client properly. She gestured politely toward the adjoining dressing room. “You’ll find a robe inside, Miss. Please change and I’ll prepare everything.”I went in and slipped out of my clothes with ease, pulling on the silk robe provided by the salon. While buttoning it up, I caught sight of myself in the small mirror and ran a hand through my hair. The woman staring back looked tired, yes, but still beautiful. She just needed a little polish, that’s all. I’d been neglecting myself with all the stress over Abigail, Conrad’s cold shoulder, and Liliana’s endless whining. No more of all that nonsense. I was going to start pampering myself again. There was truly nothing better than having someone wait on me hand and foot. When I returned to the room, Emma was al

SusannaMy lips twisted into a slow, smug smile as I listened to Marceline’s voice on the other end of the call. “Really?” I said, raising my brow in pleased surprise, unable to hide the delight creeping into my voice at the promise she had just made. She confirmed it, flatly. I nodded to myself, savoring every word. “Thank you, Marceline,” I replied, my voice syrupy sweet. She ended the call without another word, which didn’t bother me. She had said all I needed to hear.I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at it for a moment, a small laugh bubbling from my throat. Finally, I didn’t have to worry anymore. Abigail was going to be dealt with. And not by me, either. I wouldn’t have to lift a finger. All I had to do now was sit back and watch the show. It felt like cold champagne down my throat. And as if that wasn’t enough, I had something else to enjoy too; rubbing it in Liliana’s face. She really thought I was useless without her, like I couldn’t walk on my own unless she
