Chapter 3

Author: Bagel
Noah grabbed my wrist, his grip painfully tight in his panic.

"A little anemia won't kill you. You'll get over it. But Daisy is actually dying!"

"You gave us two whole bags last time, and look at you, standing here perfectly fine. Who are you putting on an act for?"

Six months ago, Noah was shot multiple times during a clash with a rival syndicate, his artery severed. He was bleeding out on the floor.

The doctors shook their heads and said there was no hope, telling the family to prepare for the worst and take over his affairs.

I was nearly hysterical with grief, sobbing and begging the doctors that there had to be another way.

Seeing me break down, the doctor finally told me of one last resort.

I had been frail and sickly since birth. But when they checked my blood, they discovered I had a rare blood type, and I was the only match for Noah.

If it was transfused to Noah, he could be saved. But I was already anemic. Giving an unauthorized, excessive amount of blood could send me into hypovolemic shock and kill me on the spot.

But I did not wait to hear the rest of the risks. Without a second thought, I had torn off my jacket, rolled up my sleeve, and offered my arm for the needle.

The doctor said I was insane. The nurse was crying as she inserted the IV.

Liam and Caleb were not there, and I was afraid they would stop me if they arrived, so I insisted they take as much as they could.

After three straight days of plasma transfusions, the color finally returned to Noah's face.

As for me, I collapsed from severe hypovolemic shock right outside his hospital room. I spent a full month in a coma in the ICU, kept alive only by a web of sophisticated machines.

When I was discharged, my doctor warned me repeatedly: my body could not survive another large-volume blood donation. If it happened again, not even a miracle could save me.

A sharp pang seized my heart. A wave of dizziness washed over me, and I swayed on my feet, unable to say a word.

But there was not a trace of pity in Noah's eyes, only pure, raw impatience.

One by one, I pried his fingers from my wrist, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"Noah, I truly regret saving you."

His body went rigid. He quickly looked away, unable to meet the gaze of my pale, ashen face.

I gave a bitter laugh and wiped away my tears.

"There was a time a simple lollipop from you could make me giddy with joy."

It was only later I found out why Noah was even at that firefight. It was because Daisy had casually mentioned wanting a rare insignia that was only available on the black market, so he led his men to storm a rival's territory.

My words must have struck a nerve. Agitated and defensive, Noah snarled at me.

"Did I hold a gun to your head and force you to save me?!"

"You were the one desperate to latch onto me, to marry into our family! That's the only reason you risked your life!"

All I could do was offer a faint smile, with no energy left to argue.

At this point, words were useless.

Liam's lips thinned. He avoided my gaze, his voice cold yet carrying a flicker of guilt.

"Evie, you don't understand. Daisy grew up in the slums. She's suffered so much."

"I just can't bear to see her suffer again."

I clenched my fists. The moment Noah was distracted, I used all my strength to shove past him and run.

But I've never been strong. I didn't get more than a few steps before a sharp pain shot through my back, and I fell heavily to the floor.

My palms scraped against the rough edge of the carpet, and a sharp pain radiated from my bruised kneecaps.

Noah finally realized he'd used too much force. The coil of nylon rope he'd grabbed dropped to the floor with a thud.

"Evie! I didn't mean to hurt you!"

"You're the one who tried to run!"

I flinched away from his outstretched hand, my eyes falling on the rope that had rolled to my feet.

He had bought it with the promise to build me a giant kite by hand, saying we would fly it on the manor's lawn all summer long.

Later, Daisy got jealous, crying as she snapped the kite's frame in two. The rope was tossed into a corner of the storage room.

And now, after such a twisted journey, it had ended up here, as the tool he would use to tie me down and take my blood.

Liam held the blood bag and walked toward me.

I scrambled on all fours toward the door, but someone pinned me down from behind.

Noah forced my arms behind my back, holding them over my head. He ripped open the sleeve of my pajamas, exposing the blue veins on the inside of my wrist.

"Go on, Liam. Do it."

"Don't waste time. Daisy can't hold on much longer."

I struggled with all my might, tears streaming down my temples and into my hair.

"Let me go! Liam, my body can't take it! I'll die if you do this again!"

The cold, thick needle pierced my skin, and Liam attached the blood bag to the end of the tube.

He couldn't look me in the eye. His voice was hoarse and cold. "Just one bag. You'll be fine. I promise."

Dark red fluid rushed through the tube. I could almost hear the sound of my own life draining away.

My consciousness began to fade. Through the floor-to-ceiling window, I gazed at the distant horizon.

The rain had stopped at some point. A blood moon was slowly rising from behind the mountain ridge.

Without a word, I reached up and pulled back the sleeve of my gown. From my wrist to the crook of my elbow, my skin was a horrifying tapestry of needle marks left over from the blood draws. Some were still circled by deep purple bruises, while others were just beginning to scab over.Dark purple bruises circled my wrists where Noah had pinned my arms back and shoved me to the floor."What gives you the right to ask for my forgiveness?"My voice was calm, but it froze the air in its tracks. Not a single one of them dared to look directly at my arm.I let out a cold laugh, watching the three of them, so guilty they seemed ready to sink through the marble floor.A light breeze swept through the greenhouse, stirring my hair.I grabbed Caleb's chin, forcing him to meet my eyes. From my pocket, I pulled out a scorched, twisted piece of glass, unrecognizable as the amulet my father had left me."When you threw the amulet my father left me into the fireplace, then tossed the shards out the win

A fiery blush spread to the tips of my ears, and I slipped my hand out of Ezekiel's broad palm."But the rumors say the Lycan King has taken countless mates over his long life."Ezekiel's eyes widened in panic. He raised three fingers to the statue of the Moon Goddess, his voice so earnest it was nearly a prayer."Those are just rumors, fabricated by outsiders who fear our kind.""My body, my heart. They have belonged only to you, from the very beginning."I pursed my lips, a wave of sorrow washing over my chest.Back then, to save me from a marriage to a so-called monster, my father took in Liam and his brothers, placing them by my side as potential mates. He could have lived longer. He could have personally walked me down the aisle.Tears fell one by one onto the back of Ezekiel's hand. His expression tightened, and he read my sorrow almost instantly."Actually, that day, your father came to find me of his own accord." Ezekiel looked down, his fingertips gently wiping the corners of

It wasn't until the sky began to pale to a sickly gray that faint, timid footsteps finally sounded from the hallway.Noah's head snapped up, but his last shred of hope died instantly."What are you doing here?"Her eyes red-rimmed, Daisy leaned weakly against the doorframe, pressing a hand to her forehead as she complained of dizziness. But this time, none of them spared her a glance.Liam's voice was cold as iron, striking her from across the room."From now on, whatever happens to you has nothing to do with us.""Evangeline is our fiancée. If you keep throwing yourself at us, you'll give her the wrong idea."Daisy froze, the fragile mask on her face cracking. The next second, she shrieked like a cat whose tail had been stepped on."You took me in off the street! You have a responsibility to take care of me for the rest of my life!""Besides, Evangeline was taken by those monsters last night! She's probably dead by now!"Meanwhile, the moonlit carriage tore through the clouds and mist

The sports car tore through the night. Liam gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. He spent the entire drive rehearsing how to apologize to Evangeline. He was undoubtedly the one who had hurt her the most. He had sworn to marry her, to protect her for the rest of her life, and had personally ordered a million-dollar couture gown for her. Yet, the moment Daisy claimed to be dizzy, he had abandoned Evangeline in the rain without a second thought. In the passenger seat, Noah picked at his knuckles, the ghost of the kite string's texture still rough against his fingertips. He didn't know what to say when he saw Evangeline. He was the one who had pinned her down so her blood could be drained. He had no right to even look her in the eye.In the backseat, Caleb urged Liam to drive faster, wishing he could sprout wings and fly to Evangeline to apologize in person.Hadn't she always wanted a place to belong? If Liam and Noah refused to marry her, he would do it.He was willing

Liam thought he heard the roar of the wind and the howling of wolves, but by the time he looked up, the night sky was empty save for the solitary blood moon. The carriage that had been hovering outside the balcony flashed through his mind, and he shook his head with a cold scoff. The lengths she would go to, orchestrating this ridiculous charade just to manipulate us. It was exhausting. He looked down, continuing to mix Daisy's medication as his gaze lingered on the clear liquid.Unbidden, a memory surfaced in his mind of the night two years ago when he took Evangeline to a high-society gala in Europe.Encouraged by the three brothers, Evangeline had tried on a custom white wedding gown by a top-tier designer. The moment she stepped out of the fitting room in the pearl-encrusted couture gown, the entire boutique fell silent. She was as breathtaking as a goddess descending to the mortal realm. She lowered her eyes shyly, a faint blush creeping up the tips of her pale ears. The thought o

Hearing the deafening wolf howls from the balcony, Liam froze. Just as he was about to stride out and investigate, Daisy clung to his waist and pressed a hand to her temple, feigning pain.He stroked her face gently, urging Noah to hurry and take her back to the medical room.As Caleb passed by me, his gaze swept over the moonlit carriage, which radiated an eerie glow outside the window. A smirk twisted his lips. "Evangeline, I never thought you'd go to such lengths just to get our attention.""Hiring actors, chartering a helicopter... This whole show must have cost a fortune, huh?"He paused, looking at me with a hint of pity in his eyes. "But to us, you aren't worth a single hair on Daisy's head."Noah turned back to glare at me, his eyes filled with disgust. "Enough with the cheap tricks. Until Daisy recovers, we don't have time to entertain your pathetic little games."The blood in my veins turned to ice. My heart felt as if it had been shattered by a heavy blow, splintering into a
