Chapter 3

Auteur: Aged
When Alessio saw how pale I was, he started toward me, wanting to pull me into his arms. He'd barely taken two steps when his phone rang.

He hesitated for a moment before answering.

"Elio just threw up! He keeps crying for his papa. Could you come over?"

Mia's voice came through the phone, soft and pleading in just the right way.

Alessio looked at me, clearly torn.

"Lilia, I…"

I looked at him, swallowing the ache in my chest.

"That's the second one," I said evenly.

His fingers went still, and for a moment, he looked as though he didn't know what to say. But in the end, he still picked up his car keys.

The living room fell silent again.

I sat at the dining table for a long time, unmoving. Luca eventually came out of his room, clutching his old pillow, his eyes red.

"I'm sorry, Mama…" he said softly. "It's because I'm not good enough. That's why Papa gave my spot at school to Elio."

"That's not true," I said, pulling him onto my lap. "You're the best, Luca. You'll go to an even better school than Curtis. I promise."

I forced myself to keep my voice light.

"When school starts, you'll have new friends and a new backpack, too. And I'll pick you up and drop you off every day, okay?"

Perhaps sensing that something was wrong, he buried his face in my neck, his tears soaking through my collar.

"Okay."

That night, after Luca had fallen asleep, I picked up my phone. I scrolled through my contacts for a long time before stopping at a name I hadn't called in years.

The argument from ten years ago still echoed in my mind.

"If you choose him, don't ever call yourself a Moretti again," Papa had shouted.

My mother had stood there with red-rimmed eyes, saying nothing. I had slammed the door behind me without looking back.

For all these years, my family had never reached out to me, and I had never asked them for anything either.

But now, for Luca, I stared at that number, my finger hovering over the call button for a long time.

In the end, I couldn't bring myself to press it.

For now, I'd let Luca stay at Hollybrook Elementary while I continued applying to other schools.

…

Over the next few days, Mia's Instagram became almost the only way I knew what Alessio was up to.

She posted a photo of a custom-made Curtis school uniform, and the comments were filled with envy.

"How did you get him in?" someone asked. "I heard someone made a huge donation to Curtis this year. Was that your husband?"

"There's nothing I can do," Mia replied almost immediately. "He loves Elio too much. He said Elio deserves the very best, and I couldn't talk him out of it. I just had to let him."

She even added a shy little emoji at the end.

It wasn't until Luca started school that Alessio finally seemed to realize how much he had let us down. To make up for it, he suggested that the three of us spend the weekend at Wonderland Park.

Luca's eyes lit up.

I knew how badly he wanted to go, so I agreed.

When we arrived at the entrance, Alessio handed Luca a present.

"Go ahead. Open it."

Luca was just about to unwrap it when Alessio's phone rang again. Mia's voice came through, carefully pitched to sound as vulnerable as possible.

"Elio's being bullied by the other kids," she cried. "His teacher said both parents need to come in, but I'm all alone…"

Alessio hesitated and looked between Luca and me.

The light in Luca's eyes faded, but he still waved at Alessio.

"It's okay. Go be with Elio. I have Mama."

Alessio stood there for a few seconds, then he left.

After he was gone, Luca quietly opened his present. Inside was an old red toy car with scratches on the doors, and Elio's name was still stuck to the bottom.

At that moment, the large screens outside the park lit up with photos of visitors. Right in the center was a picture of Alessio and Mia holding Elio's hands, smiling like a family.

Luca started sobbing so hard that his whole body shook.

I picked him up, and he buried his face in my shoulder, crying so hard he could barely catch his breath.

"Mama…" he choked out. "I don't want Papa anymore."

Realization dawned on me.

Getting a child used to life without his father wasn't that difficult after all. All it took was for Alessio to be cruel enough.

But Alessio started sending things.Flowers, toys, clothes, jewelry—there was always something different every day. The housekeeper didn't even bother opening most of the packages anymore. "...The Moretti family's trust beneficiaries have been revised," the reporter on television announced. Lilia Moretti and her son, Luca, have officially been added to the list of heirs. Industry analysts believe this move could have a significant impact on the financial markets..."Alessio stood there as though he'd just been punched in the face. He'd only ever heard of the Moretti family in financial news. It was an influential family that controlled a vast portion of the global financial world—a place where he had never even come close to entering. He thought back to the first time he'd met me. It had been late at night on the streets of Newick, where a group of thugs had surrounded me. He'd rushed over with his men and stepped in front of me, shielding me from them. I'd looked up at him with bright eyes as I thanked him before walking away. After that, he spent three years pursuing me. I had rejected and avoided him, even telling him that he didn't know me at all. But he'

At some point, Mia had followed Alessio out. "Alessio, don't read it," she said, her voice strained as she grabbed his arm. "Lilia must've made him write this. What does a child know? He was obviously told what to write."He shook her off, turning to the first page with trembling hands. He skimmed through the second and third pages with unbelievable speed. "September 10: Papa said he'd stay with me until I fell asleep, but in the middle of the night, I heard him get a call from Mia and leave. The thunder woke me up, and I was scared. I cried and went to find Mama.""September 12: It was Parents' Day at school. I invited Papa, but he said he had work. My classmates laughed at me for not having a Papa there. But I do have a Papa. He was just with Elio.""September 13: Mama and I saw Papa at the mall. He was buying a toy for Elio. I've wanted that little red car for a long time. I wanted to ask Mama why Papa wouldn't buy one for me, but Mama was crying, so I didn't."Alessio's eye

Alessio sat on the couch in the hospital room, rubbing the bridge of his nose wearily. Mia brought him a glass of warm milk and sat down beside him. "Thank you for everything today," she said softly. He hummed in acknowledgment but didn't take the milk. His eyes instinctively drifted toward the doorway, but I was nowhere to be seen. He pulled out his phone, but there weren't any missed calls or unread messages. Frowning, Alessio found my number and called me. I didn't answer, so he tried again. My phone was turned off. The memory of my desperate pleas and the look of despair in my eyes suddenly filled him with a deep sense of unease. He'd just gotten to his feet when Mia caught him by the wrist. "Where are you going?""To check on Lilia and Luca.""What about Elio and me?" Mia said, her voice turning soft and wounded as her eyes reddened. "What if Elio suddenly develops a fever in the middle of the night? Besides, Lilia and Luca are used to waiting. Surely they can wa

I spent the rest of the day looking into the admission requirements for other schools while figuring out how to get Luca transferred out of Hollybrook Elementary as quickly as possible. But things took an unexpected turn sooner than I'd anticipated. That afternoon, I was in the middle of a meeting at the office when my phone started vibrating nonstop. It was Hollybrook Elementary School. "Is this Luca's mother? There's been a problem with lunch at school. A lot of the children are vomiting and having diarrhea, and Luca's condition is pretty serious. You need to come right away."I barely remembered how I'd driven to the school. Parents crowded around the entrance, and ambulances sat outside with their lights flashing. Luca had been moved onto a school bus to rest temporarily. His face was deathly pale, and there wasn't a trace of color in his lips. The moment he saw me, tears welled in his eyes. "Mama, my stomach hurts so bad…" he said, his voice barely audible. "And m
