Chapter Eighty-Eight

****

We had barely finished with the morning drill when he cornered me.

He followed me to the open courtyard, just after training, sweat still cooling on my skin, breath steady from drills with Jason and Kael. He blocked my path like he owned the ground under my boots.

“Aria,” Kieran said.

I didn’t stop walking.

He moved with me, matching my pace. “Wait. Please.”

I slowed down a bit. Not because I wanted to. But because I wanted to hear what lies he has to say this time.

He turned to face me fully, his eyes wide, earnest, and hands open at his sides like a penitent. “I need to say this. Before I lose my nerve.”

I crossed my arms. Waited.

“I’ve tried everything,” he began, voice trembling just enough to sound real. “Distance,strategy, even silence. But none of it works… because I can’t stop thinking about you.”

I opened my eyes wide and folded my arms across my chest.

The lie came out, smooth as poison: “I’m not here to contend with you, Aria. I'm not here to play
