Chapter 1

I didn’t go to my chamber.

Instead, I walked straight to the High Warden’s tower, the heavy leather coat of my official Academy uniform rustling against my legs. With every step, the spirit stone in my hand grew colder, its faint pink glow flickering like a candle drowning in its own wax. Ten years of feeding it my soul power, ten years of trying to bridge the chasm between an emerging hero of the academy and a common snow bunny—all evaporating into ash.

Inside the Warden’s office, the old lion beastman didn't even look up from his ledgers when I placed the dim stone on his mahogany desk.

"You're early, Adria," Warden Vane said, his deep voice rumbling through the room. "The decade seal doesn't dissolve until three days later."

"I'm not here to ask for an extension, Warden," I said, my voice steady—a sound so foreign to my own ears that even Vane paused, lifting his sharp, golden eyes to meet mine. "I'm here to file the final severance paperwork."

Vane leaned back, his clawed fingers intertwining. "Severance? Ares is on the verge of claiming the Head's seat. If you pull out now, you forfeit your Academy rank. You'll return to the outer territories as a rogue mage."

"I know."

"He brought the Fox girl into the inner sanctum today, didn't he?" Vane sighed, a rare flicker of pity passing over his scarred face. "He thinks because you're a bunny, your spirit channel is too fragile to support his ascension. The Council is already preparing to sanction a secondary soul-tether with her."

"They don't need to," I replied, pulling a silver signet ring off my right index finger and setting it beside the dying stone. "They can have the primary one."

Vane stared at me for a long moment before drawing a dark parchment from his desk drawer. "Sign at the bottom. Three days later, when the pact snaps, it won't be pleasant for him, Adria. A broken bond—even an unacknowledged one—leaves a scar on the spirit realm."

"He won't feel a thing," I said softly, signing my name in bold, black ink. "He never opened his side of the bond anyway."

The Academy offers two types of pact between mages and beasts, one for eternity and one temporary that has to be renewed every ten years.

Since our compatibility test results got more than ninety percent, we were certain to form an eternal pact. But I requested Warden Vane to offer me only a temporary pact. It was because I wanted to win Ares’s heart before bonding with him for eternity.

I never thought that day would come, and instead one day I would be eager to sever whatever bond I had with him.

Back in the training ward, Ares stood in the center of the ring, his dark aura flaring with violent, crackling energy. Beside him, Molly—the fox beastwoman—was laughing, her three fiery orange tails fanning out in perfect sync with his mana flow.

"Look at that line of sight!" one of the elite guards marveled from the sidelines. "With Lady Molly's amplification, Lord Ares will hit SS-class by the end of the month! It's a miracle he managed to hold back his potential for ten years tied to that useless rabbit."

"Where is Adria?" another chimed in. "Usually she's standing near the weapon racks holding his towel and cooling potions."

Ares paused his strike, wiping sweat from his brow. His eyes flicked unconsciously toward the shadowed archway where I usually sat. It was empty. A strange, minute prickle flared at the back of his neck, but he brushed it off, turning back to Molly.

"Again," Ares commanded, his voice arrogant and booming. "Molly, channel your flame into my right vanguard."

"Of course, Ares," Molly cooed, stepping closer, her hand resting over his heart. "Together, we're unstoppable.”

The mana rose and then suddenly dimmed as someone yelled my name, “Adria, where have you been? Ares is freaking hot. Why are you not carrying his towel?”

I had been returning to my chamber when I bumped into my batch mates. My gaze met Ares, who seemed to be scanning me.

I turned to look back at the person who just questioned me as I replied, “He no longer needs me. He already has someone to take care of him.”

With that, I turned to leave. But before I could leave, a pair of strong arms grabbed me from behind, making me turn back.

I turned back only to find Ares staring at me with a pair of dark eyes. “What did you just say?”

"Match over," the Head Arbiter’s voice cracked from the balcony, trembling through the sound-amplification spell. "By unanimous surrender and complete subjugation... Hades and Adria are declared Grand Tournament."A collective breath left the stadium, followed by a roar of whispers that quickly escalated into thunderous applause. The illusion was shattered. The grand hero of the Academy had fallen, not to a fluke, but to absolute, flawless synergy.Molly remained on the cold marble floor, weeping silently as the Academy medical corps rushed past her to haul Ares away on a stretcher. Ares cursed them, thrashing helplessly, his eyes locked onto me until the grand doors slammed shut behind him. He had lost his power, his status, and the only woman who had ever truly given him her heart.Three months laterThe morning mist curled softly around the spires of the Northern Citadel, far from the suffocating heat and politics of the Grand Academy. In the central courtyard, a new monument stood

"Don't look at me like that!" Ares roared, his voice cracking under the weight of thousands of staring eyes. "A stupid number on a crystal doesn't mean anything! I am the strongest warrior this Academy has produced in a decade!" He shoved Molly forward by her shoulder. "Molly, buff my blade! Now!"Molly stumbled, her face still paper-white from the towering 99% burning above us, but she frantically raised her hands. Her golden aura flared—brittle and flickering compared to before, but still potent. "Light’s Favor! Strength of the Sun!" she chanted, her voice trembling. A streak of brilliant gold wrapped around Ares’s burning sword, amplifying the heat until the air between us shimmered with heatwaves."We take them down together!" Ares barked. "I’ll split Hades in half, you keep the pressure on Adria!"Hades didn't even draw his dark sword. He simply stood in front of me, an immovable wall of black armor and absolute zero. "Stay close, Adria," he murmured, his voice a calm anchor in

"Adria," Ares called out, his voice raw, taking a half-step toward me. "Look at you... wasting your potential on a ghost. You cured him, fine. You proved your worth. But look around! I am seconds away from claiming the mantle of Head of the Academy!"He extended a hand toward me. "Leave him. Come to my side where you belong. We’ll rule the entire continent. You don't have to rot in that frozen wasteland with a relic of the past."Beside him, Molly’s face drained of color. "Ares!" she gasped, clutching his arm in disbelief. "What are you saying?!"Ares shoved Molly’s hand off his sleeve without a second glance, his burning gaze fixed entirely on Adria.I didn't flinch. I slowly raised my head, looking at him as if he were nothing more than a stain on the marble floor. A cold, disdainful smile touched my lips."Rule the continent with you?" I sneered, "I would rather rot in the deepest pit of the frozen territory than spend another second breathing the same air as you, Ares. You talk of

Three days later, the Great Arena of the High Academy was packed to absolute brim. Tens of thousands of spectating noblemen, grand elders, and powerful mages cheered, their voices shaking the massive enchanted pillars that held up the colosseum. Banners of deep crimson and gold flapped in the dry mountain wind, signaling the dominance of the Sun-Phoenix Faction.High upon the central balcony, the High Elders sat in a row of heavy velvet thrones, watching the final rounds of the tournament conclude.Down in the blood-stained ring, Ares stood with his head held high, a broad, arrogant grin plastered across his face. Sweat glistened on his broad shoulders, but he barely looked winded. At his feet lay the battered, unconscious body of the Academy’s top champion.Beside Ares stood Molly. She wore a gown of fine silk, her cheeks flushed with pride as she soaked in the roaring adulation of the crowd. A shimmering golden aura radiated from her body, pulsating in perfect harmony with Ares’s roa

Ares’s desperate expression froze. His golden eyes slowly drifted past my shoulder, falling upon the silent, motionless figure lying on the black frost-stone platform behind me.He noticed the delicate white thread of mana stretching from my chest, anchoring deeply into Hades’s heart. The desperate plea on Ares's face melted away, replaced by a dark, ugly, twisted grimace of humiliation and bitter rage."Is this why you refused me?" Ares sneered, his voice dropping an octave as his crimson mana flared back to life, scorching the star-lily garlands on the walls. "You left me... for a corpse?""Watch your tongue," Julian snapped, stepping forward."Shut up, stray!" Ares roared, throwing a wave of fiery pressure that forced Julian to brace his blade. Ares pointed a shaking, violent finger at Hades. "Look at him, Adria! He's a broken husk! A fallen tyrant who got himself poisoned like a pathetic fool three years ago! He can't even open his eyes!""He protected those who had no voice," I ye

He didn't wake up immediately. But he changed. The dark, corrupted mana veins that had crept up his throat receded, fading into faint, silver-tinged scars. Every morning, I sat beside the black frost-stone platform, holding his pale, calloused hand. I would focus my mana, weaving thin threads of pure, uncorrupted light into his shattered spirit realm. It was exhausting work. Healing a consciousness that had been fractured by dark-curse poison felt like rebuilding a glass tower in the middle of a storm.Yet, I was never alone. The beastfolk made sure of it.Peter, the little panda beast, would waddle in twice a day carrying wooden trays of hot, herb-infused broths meant to restore my depleted energy. Lady Foxy would sit near the foot of the platform, carefully brushing the dust from Hades’s robes and whispering updates about the sanctuary. Even Julian came by regularly, adjusting the ancient arrays around the chamber to ease the strain on my core."He moved his fingers today," I whispe
