Amon had long since finished his letter and went to sleep. The sky seemed to be getting lighter, but that was of no concern to Louis. He tore open the wooden door of the chamber, which fell into the lock with a loud bang. Most of the monks had not been frightened by night and morning noises in a long time. They had got used to a demon going about his business in this monastery at night. Eros had been frightened again and again by the nocturnal noises, but mostly he had been so exhausted by Louis during the day that he slept through the night and hardly anything could wake him. The monastery itself would have to go up under his bed as the young man would wake up from his dreams.

The abbot woke up to the loud bang and sat up wearily, wondering what was going on here. "Louis?" He asked tiredly. He wondered what had stung the demon.
