Chapter 4

Author: Forest Isle
I flipped to the last page of the agenda.

The name of the lead designer had also been changed to William Baker.

No one in the conference room said a word.

Some of the team members lowered their heads, not daring to meet my eyes.

Seren rubbed her temples.

"The client has more confidence in William. Having his name on the proposal will improve our chances of winning the bid. Once we secure the project, you'll still get your bonus and share of the profits."

William offered me a glass of water.

"Don't be upset. Once we win the bid, I'll make sure to mention you at the celebration."

I didn't take the glass and asked him, "Have you even seen the first draft of this proposal?"

William couldn't answer.

Seren finally ran out of patience. She said coldly, "Starting today, you're off the presentation team. Hand over all the remaining materials to William. You don't need to attend any further meetings."

My chest tightened.

"What gives you the right to kick me off the project?"

"I'm the project lead."

"The copyright belongs to me."

"The contract is very clear. Any design work produced during the project belongs to the joint team."

She knew me too well.

She knew that when I agreed to work with her, I didn't bother reading the contract line by line.

When she handed it to me, all she said was, "I won't let you get the short end of the stick."

And I signed.

William stepped toward me, saying gently, "Charles, don't let personal issues get in the way of everyone's work, please? Seren is just doing what's best for the project."

I unplugged the cable connecting the laptop to the projector.

The screen abruptly went black.

Seren grabbed my sleeve, her tone icy. "Stop making a scene. Plug it back in. I'll make it up to you once the project is over.

"William needs this project to establish himself. You've already won two awards. You don't need another one."

I stared straight into her eyes.

"He needs it, so I'm supposed to step aside. Is that it?"

Seren didn't answer the question directly.

"Why are you competing with him?"

I suddenly didn't want to fight anymore.

I pulled my sleeve free, and she let go.

Then, I handed the cable to William.

"Fine. You present it."

Seren's expression softened slightly.

"I'll come see you after work. We'll talk about this then."

"Don't bother."

I turned and left the conference room.

Just before the elevator closed, the project assistant came running after me and shoved a folder into my hands.

"Mr. Leed, these are old files that Ms. Grant told me to get rid of. They were supposed to be shredded, but I thought there might be something of yours in here."

I opened the folder.

The first document was a complaint record from a design competition for rookies, held three years ago.

The accused was William Baker.

The complainant's signature was mine.

Clipped to the final page of the report was an internal email signed by Seren.

The subject line simply read, "Plan to Approach Charles Leed and Persuade Him to Withdraw His Complaint."

…

Three years ago, I entered a design competition for emerging designers.

The night before the final round, my submission was leaked. William presented a design that was nearly identical to mine and walked away with the grand prize.

I'd filed a formal complaint, but the organizers claimed there wasn't enough evidence and urged me to settle the matter privately.

While I was at my lowest, Seren Grant came into my life.

She helped me find a lawyer, organize evidence, and even stayed by my side all night when I came down with a high fever.

Later, the drive containing my evidence was accidentally damaged, making it impossible to pursue the complaint.

She told me, "Just let it go. Don't let one competition hold you back. You still have me."

That was the moment I fell in love with her.

For three years, it was also the only evidence I had that she loved me.

But the email was dated seven days before we first met.

I turned the pages one by one.

There were messages from William.

"Charles might still have a backup copy of the evidence. If this blows up, it'll affect the company's next round of financing."

Seren had replied, "I'll approach him."

"He's very guarded. Are you sure you can handle him?"

"People who are starved for affection are easy to deal with. Give it some time. He'll give up on his own."

Seren held out an old hard drive."It has every design draft you sent me three years ago, along with our chat history. I didn't delete any of it.""There's already enough evidence.""That's not what it's for."She paused."You used to send me so many things every day."The flowers blooming downstairs, a terrible cake you had, a cat you spotted on the street. Back then, I thought they were all meaningless and wouldn't reply for hours."It's only after you stopped sending me things that I realized just how quiet a day could be."I didn't respond. She laughed self-deprecatingly."I moved out of that apartment.""What about Bun?""I gave him to a family who genuinely loves cats. I also got rid of everything William left behind. I replaced the fingerprint lock and put the apartment up for sale.""Seren, you don't owe me an explanation.""I know."She slipped the hard drive back into her pocket, her voice growing softer."I just wanted to talk to you a little longer."Someon

Later, the client reached out to me, asking my team to take over the project and complete it independently.Seren was also present on the day the contract was signed. She was no longer the project lead. She was only attending as a representative of the former business partner.Halfway through the signing, the client stepped out to take a phone call. That left Seren and me alone in the conference room. She slid a document toward me."These are all the communication records between the event's investors and Grant Group from back then.""Eva already has them.""This copy includes my written testimony."I flipped to the last page.In it, Seren admitted that the company instructed her to approach me, the complainant, and that she used our personal relationship to persuade me to drop my case.If this testimony was submitted, she wouldn't just face disciplinary action from the company. She would also lose the credibility she'd earned with the industry association."Why are you giv

Five days after the old case was reopened, William reached out to me.He asked to meet downstairs at the hospital."Charles, are you determined to destroy my life?"He pulled off his mask, his eyes terribly red."The organizers suspended my professional certification, and the company put me on leave. Seren also got reprimanded by the board for withdrawing from the project on your behalf.I swirled the coffee in my cup."So?""I didn't steal your design three years ago. An intern sent it to me. I didn't know someone else had already entered it in the competition.""Then why did you keep using it after you found out it was mine?""The competition started the next day. I had no way out."His voice trembled."That was my first opportunity in this industry. If I admitted to plagiarism, my life would've been ruined.""So you decided to ruin mine instead.""But you managed to stand back up, didn't you?"It was only after he spoke that he realized how bad his words sounded.Afte

Seren's gaze passed over Eva and landed on me."You brought an outsider into our business?"Eva pushed up her glasses."Ms. Grant, Mr. Leed hired me to handle the copyright issues, termination of the project partnership, and reopening the case. I'm not here to mediate relationship disputes.""I'm talking to him. You don't get to answer for him."Seren reached out to grab me, but I stepped away. Her hand froze in midair, her fingers slowly curling into a fist."Charles, let's talk in private.""There's nothing to talk about.""Your mother just finished surgery. Are you sure you want to make a scene here?"I looked at her."You're the only one making a scene here."Seren's jaw tightened, but she eventually lowered her voice."I admit I had a hidden agenda when I first approached you, but over the past three years, I've been there when you were sick, helped you deal with problems at work, and even met your family. Do you think all of that was an act?""Whether it was an act

The next morning at nine, the joint project was suspended from the bid.William's eligibility to serve as the lead presenter was frozen as well. When the news reached the hospital, I was pouring Mom a glass of water.Seren called. "You revoked the authorization?""Yes.""Reinstate it now."Her voice was still composed, but she was speaking faster than usual."There are only two days left until the final review. Do you have any idea how much the company will lose if you pull out at this stage?"I gripped the thermal flask tightly."Didn't you say that we don't need to distinguish whose work the joint project was? Since William is the lead designer, just tell him to create a new proposal.""Charles Leed, I don't have time to deal with your tantrum right now.""I'm not throwing a tantrum.""Then what was that complaint email supposed to be?"It seemed the association had contacted her.I walked to the end of the hallway."It's exactly what it looks like. The final message was sent the day after Seren and I became a couple.William asked her, "Has he withdrawn the complaint yet?"Seren replied, "Almost. He's easy to handle."The pages rustled softly in my hand.Just then, my phone lit up.It was my mother calling. She was scheduled for surgery to remove a tumor today.Seren promised that she'd be there.By the time I arrived at the hospital, the nurse had already reminded us twice that it was time.Mom lay in the hospital bed, her face pale."Is Seren stuck in traffic?""Yeah," I lied. "She'll be here soon."I walked to the stairwell and called Seren. The first time, no one answered. The second call was declined, and on the third attempt, William picked up."Charles, Seren isn't available right now.""Put her on the phone.""Bun ran away. We're looking for him now. He's timid, and it's raining outside. He could be in real danger."I gripped my phone."My mom has surgery in half an hour. She promised she'd come."Willi
