Chapter 3

Author: Forest Isle
I responded, "There's nothing I can eat."

"Don't be so picky."

William immediately called a waiter.

"Could we have an order of carbonara, please? Charles is allergic to nuts. Seren, did you forget?"

Seren's hand paused for a moment.

"I've had a lot on my mind lately."

She didn't apologize.

Instead, William comforted me gently. "Seren is the type to forget her own birthday, so don't take it personally. We've known each other for ten years, but she also forgets about my allergens sometimes."

Someone at the table laughed. "Oh, please. Ms. Grant sent back all the fruit the supplier had delivered last time because you have a mango allergy."

Another colleague chimed in, "It's not that Ms. Grant has a bad memory. It's that she only remembers the important stuff."

The room suddenly fell silent.

Realizing what he said, the colleague awkwardly took a sip of wine.

Seren finally frowned, but not at them.

"Stop sulking, Charles. Everyone's just joking around."

She said it so casually, as if my humiliation was just an ill-timed overreaction.

I forced a smile.

"Did you invite me tonight because you wanted to discuss work?"

She wiped her hands. "What else?"

"Do your coworkers even know we're dating?"

Seren's expression darkened.

"It was one joke. Do you really have to make a scene out of it?

"There's no need to bring our personal relationship into the workplace. You're a business partner on this project. Don't let your personal feelings affect how people judge your professionalism."

My fingertips went ice-cold. I stood up and picked up my jacket.

William rose with me.

"Don't go. I'll get them to apologize to you."

"No need."

I looked at Seren and said softly, "Ms. Grant is right. Personal relationships shouldn't affect professional work."

Seren's eyebrows twitched.

This time, I didn't wait for her to respond and simply walked out of the dining room alone.

Just as the door was about to close, I heard one of her colleagues ask in a low voice, "Ms. Grant, is he really your boyfriend?"

After a brief silence, Seren answered calmly.

"We're still figuring things out. Don't bring it up in front of William."

…

As it turned out, Seren really did keep her professional and personal lives separate.

Just before the rehearsal for the project presentation the next afternoon, my assistant came rushing over with a revised agenda, looking utterly stunned.

"Mr. Leed, why has the lead presenter been changed?"

I looked down at the schedule.

My name, which had originally been listed as the lead presenter, had been replaced with William Baker.

My team and I had spent six months pouring our blood, sweat, and tears into this residential development proposal. The initial concept had more than 300 technical drawings. Meanwhile, William had only attended two meetings as an observer.

Clutching the schedule, I strode straight into the conference room.

"Seren Grant, care to explain this?"

She was leaning over to adjust the project for William. At the sound of my voice, she glanced up indifferently.

"It's a last-minute adjustment. William will handle the presentation. You'll take the questions.

"He's the marketing director, so his communication skills are better than yours."

I placed the schedule on the table.

"The core concept, floor plans, and models are all mine. William hasn't even verified the dimensions on the drawings. What makes him qualified to lead the presentation?"

William closed his laptop and said gently, "I'm not trying to steal your credit. Seren said you haven't been in a good state lately and was worried you'd lose your temper during the presentation."

"When did I ever lose my temper?"

Seren cut in. "Last night. You questioned our personal relationship in front of the entire team. You've already affected the working atmosphere."

She pulled out a chair and gestured for me to sit.

"Charles, I know you're uncomfortable with how close William and I are, but this is a 200 million dollar project. I can't risk it just to make you feel better."

Her voice remained perfectly even, yet every word undermined my professional credibility.

"So you're handing all my work to him?"

"He's only presenting it."

"And whose name goes on it?"

Seren held out an old hard drive."It has every design draft you sent me three years ago, along with our chat history. I didn't delete any of it.""There's already enough evidence.""That's not what it's for."She paused."You used to send me so many things every day."The flowers blooming downstairs, a terrible cake you had, a cat you spotted on the street. Back then, I thought they were all meaningless and wouldn't reply for hours."It's only after you stopped sending me things that I realized just how quiet a day could be."I didn't respond. She laughed self-deprecatingly."I moved out of that apartment.""What about Bun?""I gave him to a family who genuinely loves cats. I also got rid of everything William left behind. I replaced the fingerprint lock and put the apartment up for sale.""Seren, you don't owe me an explanation.""I know."She slipped the hard drive back into her pocket, her voice growing softer."I just wanted to talk to you a little longer."Someon

Later, the client reached out to me, asking my team to take over the project and complete it independently.Seren was also present on the day the contract was signed. She was no longer the project lead. She was only attending as a representative of the former business partner.Halfway through the signing, the client stepped out to take a phone call. That left Seren and me alone in the conference room. She slid a document toward me."These are all the communication records between the event's investors and Grant Group from back then.""Eva already has them.""This copy includes my written testimony."I flipped to the last page.In it, Seren admitted that the company instructed her to approach me, the complainant, and that she used our personal relationship to persuade me to drop my case.If this testimony was submitted, she wouldn't just face disciplinary action from the company. She would also lose the credibility she'd earned with the industry association."Why are you giv

Five days after the old case was reopened, William reached out to me.He asked to meet downstairs at the hospital."Charles, are you determined to destroy my life?"He pulled off his mask, his eyes terribly red."The organizers suspended my professional certification, and the company put me on leave. Seren also got reprimanded by the board for withdrawing from the project on your behalf.I swirled the coffee in my cup."So?""I didn't steal your design three years ago. An intern sent it to me. I didn't know someone else had already entered it in the competition.""Then why did you keep using it after you found out it was mine?""The competition started the next day. I had no way out."His voice trembled."That was my first opportunity in this industry. If I admitted to plagiarism, my life would've been ruined.""So you decided to ruin mine instead.""But you managed to stand back up, didn't you?"It was only after he spoke that he realized how bad his words sounded.Afte

Seren's gaze passed over Eva and landed on me."You brought an outsider into our business?"Eva pushed up her glasses."Ms. Grant, Mr. Leed hired me to handle the copyright issues, termination of the project partnership, and reopening the case. I'm not here to mediate relationship disputes.""I'm talking to him. You don't get to answer for him."Seren reached out to grab me, but I stepped away. Her hand froze in midair, her fingers slowly curling into a fist."Charles, let's talk in private.""There's nothing to talk about.""Your mother just finished surgery. Are you sure you want to make a scene here?"I looked at her."You're the only one making a scene here."Seren's jaw tightened, but she eventually lowered her voice."I admit I had a hidden agenda when I first approached you, but over the past three years, I've been there when you were sick, helped you deal with problems at work, and even met your family. Do you think all of that was an act?""Whether it was an act

The next morning at nine, the joint project was suspended from the bid.William's eligibility to serve as the lead presenter was frozen as well. When the news reached the hospital, I was pouring Mom a glass of water.Seren called. "You revoked the authorization?""Yes.""Reinstate it now."Her voice was still composed, but she was speaking faster than usual."There are only two days left until the final review. Do you have any idea how much the company will lose if you pull out at this stage?"I gripped the thermal flask tightly."Didn't you say that we don't need to distinguish whose work the joint project was? Since William is the lead designer, just tell him to create a new proposal.""Charles Leed, I don't have time to deal with your tantrum right now.""I'm not throwing a tantrum.""Then what was that complaint email supposed to be?"It seemed the association had contacted her.I walked to the end of the hallway."It's exactly what it looks like. The final message was sent the day after Seren and I became a couple.William asked her, "Has he withdrawn the complaint yet?"Seren replied, "Almost. He's easy to handle."The pages rustled softly in my hand.Just then, my phone lit up.It was my mother calling. She was scheduled for surgery to remove a tumor today.Seren promised that she'd be there.By the time I arrived at the hospital, the nurse had already reminded us twice that it was time.Mom lay in the hospital bed, her face pale."Is Seren stuck in traffic?""Yeah," I lied. "She'll be here soon."I walked to the stairwell and called Seren. The first time, no one answered. The second call was declined, and on the third attempt, William picked up."Charles, Seren isn't available right now.""Put her on the phone.""Bun ran away. We're looking for him now. He's timid, and it's raining outside. He could be in real danger."I gripped my phone."My mom has surgery in half an hour. She promised she'd come."Willi
