Father cleared his throat and I knew he was about to add something to the things she said. “They came for tea.”

They expected us to share in their joy, I guess. But with what had happened? I don’t think that was possible. We always did things like this behind their backs so if anyone told them about our uncultured behaviour, they would never believe it.
