It was the first time I had been in Michael’s office without freaking the fuck out in a long time.

I knew that Allison would want to meet to discuss custody at some point or another, and frankly, I was more than ready to have that conversation with her. I had hoped that the way I had acted when we were at the hospital had been enough to convince her that I was worthy of this, that I was ready for it.

That said, I was still a little nervous. What if she told me that she wanted me to keep my distance? That would have been her call, and there wasn’t a lot I could do about it—not a lot I wanted to, anyway, given how ill she was and how little I wanted to apply extra pressure to her in her current circumstances.

By the time she arrived at the office, I had been waiting nearly ten minutes. Given everything that was going on, I didn’t blame her for being a little late. I got to my feet and gave her a hug as soon as she came through the door.
