Amelia

“Cunning and egotistical,” Director Crane drawls as she drags me along by my elbow, my bundle of provisions confiscated in her other arm. “A dangerous combination for anyone, though in your case I expect it will eventually turn out to be lethal.”

I struggle against the director, but she has too many other kids helping her now. When I first ran into them, they pinned me to the ground, tying my limbs with rope. Now, they pull tightly on the ropes, ensuring I go only where they want me to go.

The director leads me downstairs, but when I turn toward the basement door, she tugs me in a different direction to another set of stairs I didn’t even know existed. The suffocating humidity of the basement slowly gives way to a depthless darkness and a frigidity that seeps into my bones with every step down.

I can no longer see, only hear the director turn a key in a lock, followed by the sound of hinges squeaking, presumably under the weight of a heavy door. Then Director Crane pushes me inside, her subordinates never letting go of the ropes tied to my legs so that I fall flat on my face against an icy floor.

“Lucky for me,” her voice echoes in the darkness, “in two more days, you’ll be someone else’s problem.” The ropes tied to me are thrown on top of me, and the sound of the door slamming shut rings in what sounds like an empty room, followed by the thunk of the lock engaging.

I search the space blindly, unable to see, even as my eyes adjust to the darkness. I find no food or water in this dungeon, no matter how many times I explore.

For two days, hunger, thirst, and cold torture me. My fingers go numb from pulling at the rope knots on my limbs in an attempt to use the rope as some sort of weapon.

But I never manage to undo the knots. I am completely out of ideas.

Eventually, the squeaking hinges grind once again, and the director returns, this time with full-grown, well-trained guards. It’s time to meet my new master.

The guards use candles to find me in the dark dungeon, the light blinding to me. They use the ropes already tied to me, pushing me toward the stairs, and dragging me up to my fate.

Director Crane leads the way, not even bothering to make eye contact with me. Once we’re on the ground floor, Zella comes running.

“Director, the Alpha Prince has arrived to visit the orphanage!”

“The – the Alpha Prince?” Director Crane sputters, quickly smoothing out her hair. Her gaze accidentally catches mine, and she quickly squares her shoulders and pinches my chin.

“Not for you, Amelia. No royalty would ever want you.”

She pats my cheek roughly. “Besides, after your last escape attempt, I renegotiated your original contract from pet to slave as promised.”

Straightening up, Director Crane turns her attention to the guards. “I must greet the Alpha Prince, so I leave her in your capable hands. But do keep on eye on her.”

She narrows a glare at me. “She’s a runner.”

Once the director is gone, I struggle against the ropes, but after two days without any food at all, I’m too weak to break free from the guards’ hold. The most I do is delay us a bit.

They yank me through the front doors into the courtyard that’s packed with every resident and staff member of the orphanage. While the guards drag me off to the side, the carriage set to take me to my new master in sight, everyone else is bowed down in greeting to the Alpha Prince. The guards seem to realize their mistake, stopping to bow out of respect.

And I find my moment.

Taking advantage of the guards’ distraction, I give one final heave of the ropes to break free of their control. To my shock, it works, and I give every last ounce of energy I have into running away – away from the carriage, away from the bowing crowd, away from the Home for the Forgotten.

But even every last ounce of my energy is insufficient. It takes about two seconds for the guards to catch me, kicking me to the ground. I collapse in the courtyard, crying out in pain.

The guards hold me down. I don’t even have the strength left to raise my head.

I’ve missed my final chance to escape, and the weight of my reality comes crashing down, tracking silent tears down my cheeks. I truly thought that I’d be able to find a way out of my terrible fate. I thought finding that man in the woods was a good omen that Fate was on my side, that I had a purpose other than serving some werewolf master.

Yet here I am, on my way to a fate worse than death.

That stranger said at least I’m alive, but right now, I wish I’m not.

“Who is she?”

I’m not sure who asks the question, confused by the vague familiarity of its timber. Before I can spend a second trying to place where I’ve heard it before, I’m distracted by the sound of every head in the courtyard turning to look at me. I’m sure it would be a sight to see if I had enough energy to raise my head and meet their gazes.

“I’m so sorry, your Majesty.” That voice is all too familiar, though I’m not used to hearing Director Crane sounding quite so groveling. “She’s just a disobedient child.”

In that moment, I realize the director is wrong. I am disobedient. I plan to be for the rest of my life, as long as the rules continue to keep me imprisoned.

But I’m no longer a child. Today is my eighteenth birthday. I’m officially a woman.

So far, womanhood sucks.

“She tried to escape,” Director Crane continues in the silence that follows. “She’s no longer suitable as a pet, obviously, so she’s being carried off to Alpha Constantine to be his slave. You can be assured, your Majesty, that her insubordination will be handled correctly under his oversight.”

The second time she says “your Majesty”, I realize she’s talking to the Alpha Prince – which explains why she’s tripping over herself to provide a reasonable explanation. I hope briefly that he’ll be dissatisfied, that my last escape attempt, albeit a failure, will have earned the source of my abuse these eighteen years some sort of punishment.

But he says nothing, and Director Crane continues babbling.

“I offer my most heartfelt apology for offending you, your Majesty. I promise to dispose of the slave immediately.”

My heart lurches at the relief that floods my veins. If she executes me to please the Alpha Prince, at least I won’t have to live my days out as a slave.

The sound of fine boots clinking against the courtyard stones lays a rhythm for my final moments. As the royal riding boots come into my line of sight, I decide that I’d like to see the face of the man who has just spared me my awful fate with the promise of death.

I raise my head to a bronze hand resting on a royal sword and muscular arms that even the royal robes cannot hide. My gaze meets his, and I’m shocked to find the amber eyes of the man who was in my bed two days ago.

He opens his mouth, and says, “I want her.”

AmeliaI stare at him in shock, still too drained from yet another ordeal to respond. How could he?“Maya should behave like the other human pets and obey the rules,” Ava adds, fanning the flames of my growing fury. “If she goes outside, she’ll be caught by the guards again.”I can’t take my eyes off the prince, waiting for him to admit this is a joke or a mistake. Something. Anything.I’m not a caged bird to be kept indoors. I can’t imagine not being able to get outside. And all because of Ava’s lies! Her ability to twist the truth to her advantage is impressive if not diabolical. She was the one who ordered the guards to seize me.I open my mouth to say as much to Prince Owen when a guard walks in. “Prince Diego has arrived to see you, Your Majesty.”Ava looks to the prince. “We have work to discuss,” is his only explanation. “Come,” he reaches for his mate. “Let’s let Maya rest.”Before he reaches the doorway though, he turns to look at me. “And rest properly. I’ll come check on yo

AmeliaIt’s infuriating to intellectually understand I’m just a pet and yet feel so sickened by the idea of Prince Owen with someone else. Struggling to slow my breath, I leave my room again, hoping that fresh air will help. The air in this palace feels too damn stagnant. The moment I’m outside, the fresh air instantly soothes me. It takes several steps for my heartbeat to finally slow, but the stifling feeling gradually fades as I splay my toes in the grass and let the sun warm my skin. The warm breeze feels like the influx of oxygen my body needed.I wander around the gardens, making sure to stay closer to the palace this time. Even if the prince granted me permission to roam the grounds, I’d like to be close enough to run for help if I encounter Violet again.Instead of Violet though, I run into Ava. I’m surprised to see her, thinking the prince was with her.“Oh! Hello, Ava.”But she doesn’t give me the friendly greeting she offered me the day we met or the polite acknowledgement

AmeliaThe thought of Prince Owen spending another night with Ava turns my stomach. I can’t stop thinking about the sensation of his finger on my neck when he was treating my wounds, of his hand on my finger while he taught me to read. Of his naked body in the orphanage basement.I should not have feelings for my captor even if he is also my rescuer. But I do.I’m sitting in a plush armchair in my bedroom, brushing my hair after my bath as part of my new nighttime routine, when the door to my bedroom opens. I watch it open a few inches, before there’s a pause, and then the door closes again. A knock quickly follows.“Come in,” I call curiously. To my surprise, it’s Prince Owen. “Sorry,” he says, “I forgot to knock the first time. I’m trying to be better about your privacy in case you’re…” his gaze rakes down my body in a nightgown, “not clothed.”“Thank you,” I reply. How could I be angry with him for forgetting to knock when he’s putting forth the effort to change his behavior? And e

AmeliaI wake up in the morning, simultaneously feeling much better than yesterday while still exhausted and drained. I peak under my bandages where my wounds have started to heal and scab over.Deciding I should move around a little, I slowly pull myself out of bed and open the door to my bedroom. I’m leaning on the table just outside which now holds a vase of fresh lilies, trying to decide if I have the strength to wander any further when the door to Prince Owen’s room opens. It’s pathetic how my heart leaps in excitement.Especially when it’s Ava who emerges. My heart sinks at the sight of how happy she looks coming out of the prince’s room where she clearly just spent the night. I try to dip back into my room unnoticed, but I’m not quick enough.“Oh, Maya! Good morning. How are your injuries faring?”I offer Ava a polite smile. “Better, thank you.”She smiles politely in return, and I prepare myself for more pleasantries that I don’t want to endure. Yet I’m still mad when she give

AmeliaThe absence of the prince’s touch is as abrasive as a cold wind.“Maya was injured,” he explains to this stranger who called him darling. I bristle, and I’m not sure if it’s because of her presence or the fact that he called me Maya. Again.“She’s unfamiliar with others and needs help with her injuries,” he goes on. “I didn’t want her waking up to an unfamiliar face after such a traumatic event.”I try not to stare at the woman’s arm around the prince’s shoulders. I try not to care when he tucks a lock of her hair behind her ear. I try to deny who she must be.“Maya…” the woman repeats, as if tasting the name. “This is the human pet you brought back?”For some reason, I hate that she’s heard of me, but I’ve never heard of her.The prince nods. The woman tightens her arm around his shoulders. “Darling, you’ve always avoided human pets because of your mother. Why claim one now?”I had already been clued into the fact that I was the prince’s first human pet based on how Diego resp

OwenI rub my temples, pushing my chair away from the data in front of me. My father’s been giving me more and more work taking care of the kingdom so that I’m prepared to be king one day.As I take just a momentary break, my mind wanders of its own accord in the same direction it’s been wandering a lot recently.Amelia.My wolf stirs at the thought of her. I don’t know why he’s so fond of her.“She smells pleasant,” he tells me for the hundredth time as if that’s a sufficient reason. Yet it doesn’t explain why he’s constantly nudging me to check on her.Just last night he insisted I bring her proper bath oils. Despite the normalcy of nudity for werewolves, my wolf definitely noticed her exposed form. He is assuredly the reason I got so close to her before catching myself and stepping away. He’s like a bug in my mind, whispering to get closer, closer, closer to her. It’s honestly strange, especially since that’s not how he responds to our mate, Ava.“We know Ava is our fated mate,” I
