“Oh, her being there is her business, not mine,” Raymond said coldly, glancing briefly at Olive walking beside him. His tone was low but clipped, his jaw clenched.

“Don’t be foolish, Raymond,” his grandfather snapped from the other end of the call. “You know very well that Olive is no good for you.”

Raymond paused for a moment, tightening his grip on the phone. “Grandpa, not now—”

“Then when?” the old man cut in sharply. “When she’s completely destroyed your focus? You have responsibilities, a future with Mia—”

“She’s a wicked soul who will rot in jail,” Raymond interrupted, frustration thick in his voice.

“Shut up, Raymond!”

“That Olive you’re walking with—she’s weak. Damaged. A distraction. You need a woman who’ll stand beside you with strength and legacy, not someone you’ll constantly have to fix!”

“You don’t know a damn thing about her,” Raymond growled, trying to keep his voice down. “And even if you did, it wouldn’t be your call to make.”

“Of course it’s my call to make!” his gr

“Here,” Ezra said softly, placing his fingers on his lips with a teasing smirk, his eyes holding a mischievous glint as he looked at Janet. She blinked, her heart skipping. "What?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.Ezra leaned closer, his tone playful. "You’ve been staring at my lips all evening. Should I be worried or flattered?"Janet's face turned a deep shade of red. She opened her mouth to reply, then closed it again, unsure what to say. She laughed nervously. "I was not... I mean, I wasn’t..."“Caught you,” he smirked. She looked away, biting her bottom lip. "Stop it," she mumbled.“I wasn’t done looking at those lips,” he whispered, his voice low and sinful. “You always bite them when you're nervous. You have no idea how tempting that is.”“Ezra…” she whispered, her voice barely audible as she looked away, heart hammering. He gently tilted her chin back toward him. “Say my name like that again, and I might just forget to be a gentleman tonight.”Her blush deepened. “

"Hello, good day, Raymond," Ethan said, pacing back and forth slowly in his sitting room, the phone pressed to his ear."Save the greetings and go straight to the point," Raymond snapped from the other end."Raymond, I’ve heard you," Ethan said. "We’re still on the previous issue—about Olive being our sister. Can we..."He didn’t even let him finish. The line went dead.Raymond had hung up.Ethan stared at the phone in disbelief, holding it tightly like it had just betrayed him. His breath hitched. His jaw tightened. Then, without a second thought, he threw the phone across the room, and it landed on the wall and it shattered."Shit! He didn’t even let me talk before ending the call," Ethan growled. A deep sigh escaped his chest as he raked his fingers through his hair.Ezra had been leaning against the wall, arms crossed, silently watching him all along. Now, he pushed off and stepped closer."That didn’t go well.""Of course, it didn’t," Ethan snapped. He picked up the broken piece

"What's that, Mrs. Sarah?""I think Miss Olive is developing post-traumatic stress disorder," she said softly.Raymond blinked, startled. "How do you know?" he asked, his voice low but edged with worry.Mrs. Sarah sighed. "Let me sit first and explain better." She sat down with her hands folded tightly in her lap, fingers curling and uncurling like she was holding back a memory. "Because my friend Nancy went through the same thing after she lost her daughter."Raymond’s brows knitted together. "Nancy?"That name sounded familiar.Mrs. Sarah looked up at him, a distant sadness clouding her eyes. "You were only twelve then. That was the same year you lost your parents. I was taking care of you, remember? I didn’t go to Nancy immediately. I thought she was holding up fine, but… she wasn’t. After eight years, her condition only worsened. That was when I had to leave you. You had just turned twenty, and I felt you were strong enough to stand on your own. I had to take care of her."Mrs. Sa

Mrs. Sarah stood still for a moment, watching Olive, who sat on the couch, her face crumpled in grief. She'd tried everything to comfort her—words, soft gestures, even food—but nothing seemed to break through the wall of sorrow that Olive had built around herself.Olive's constant murmuring was like a repetitive song on a broken loop. "Raymond, you left me just as my baby did. Raymond, you left me..." Each word fell from her lips like the beat of a drum, each one more sorrowful than the last. Tears streamed endlessly down her face, a mask of pain, her eyes swollen and raw from the night's grief. She stepped closer toward Olive slowly, her hands outstretched as she tried to offer comfort. "Olive, dear," she whispered, her voice soft and tender. "It's okay. Raymond is just out for a little while. He'll be back soon. You're not alone."But Olive barely reacted, her voice trailing off into another round of the same heart-wrenching words. "Raymond, you left me just as my baby did..." The r

"It's not going to be possible. Forget it. I have everything under control," Raymond said in a clipped tone. There was silence from the other end of the call."No one leaves. One week from now, we will meet in court," he added firmly and ended the call with a harsh tap of his finger. The phone slipped from his hand to the floor, but he didn’t bother to pick it up. His chest was tight, his jaw clenched, and his heart felt like it was caught between a scream and silence. He turned around and looked at Olive. She was lying still, curled up, facing the wall. The light streaming in through the curtains was soft and gold, but there was nothing warm about the scene. Her face was puffy. Even from where he stood, he could see the trail of dried tears that marked her cheeks like a silent map of grief.Raymond moved closer. He sat at the edge of the bed and gently touched the pillow where her head rested. It was damp.Still wet with tears.Which meant... she had cried herself to sleep. All night

“Hope you like it here,” Raymond said, his deep voice echoing slightly as he opened the grand wooden doors, letting Olive step into the quiet, warm interior of the house.Olive paused, her eyes moving slowly across the spacious living room. The place smelled of pinewood and cinnamon. It was even more beautiful now that she was seeing it physically than it had looked on the phone. Everything was neatly arranged—books lined perfectly on shelves, velvet cushions stacked on an elegant couch, and a large painting of the sea hanging over the fireplace.Raymond stood by her side, watching her reaction closely. She gave only a small nod.He tilted his head, trying to read her silence. “That’s it?” he asked, half-joking. “No ‘wow,’ no ‘this place is beautiful,’ just a nod?”“Come on, darling, cheer up,” he added, looking at her with those lovey-dovey eyes.“It’s nice,” she finally said, her voice soft but strained.Raymond smiled, then gestured toward an elderly woman who stood across the hall

“Sir, she did a lot—like almost killing your grandson. I’m surprised you still see no issue with that and claim she needs help, not jail,” the officer said, his voice clipped but respectful. The old man shifted his cane and slowly raised his eyes. His thick silver brows furrowed as he took one long breath before responding.“Hmmm. Lies,” he finally snorted. “You speak like someone who was bribed. Tell me, how much did they pay you? I can double it. The lies are too much. You’re someone who believes reports over reality.” He pointed his cane forward. “This is the last time I’ll have this conversation with you. Mia should not spend another daybreak in that cell.”The officer didn’t even flinch at his command.“Sir, there’s nothing we can do,” he replied, his tone now firmer, more drawn. “This is beyond emotional sentiment. The law does not bend for anyone—not even you.”The old man’s nostrils flared. His voice rose without restraint this time, thunderous with rage that could silence a r

As the car was about to move, the old man came out again and shouted, "Don’t think I’m joking, Raymond."Raymond sighed and pushed open the car door, stepping out. His eyes met the old man's cold, sharp gaze."You’ve said enough, Grandpa," Raymond said, his voice low but burning with emotion. "I’m not listening to you. I’m not your toy, so don’t tell me what to do.""If you truly cared about Mia, you wouldn’t have given her false hope. That false hope is part of why she’s misbehaving," Raymond added bitterly, glancing at his grandfather.Olive stayed in the car, a soft smile forming on her lips—not of joy, but of survival. Her heart was too numb for any new pain. She had grown used to his voice, to the cruel barbs laced into every sentence. Nothing could break her more than what she’d already endured. She now understood—truly understood—why the old man clung to Mia like a lifeline. They were the same, after all: two people wrapped in selfishness and soaked in bitterness.Raymond no lo
