Chapter 2

Author: Joyful Sunshine
Huh? Where did that come from?

I stared at Clark in surprise.

But he just sneered. Refusing to back down, he looked back at me with eyes burning with resentment. “Mr. Stane, haven’t you been making my life a living hell the last year?

“You told me to walk more than thirty thousand steps a day, and only then would I be able to get my three-hundred-dollar monthly allowance. If I fail even once, I’ll get thirty dollars deducted.

“Once, I was burning up and wanted to get my monthly allowance ahead of time to see the doctor, but you asked me to write a three-thousand-word application. When I was finally done, you rejected the application because of a typo.

“I had to suffer burning with a fever for three days and nights. Aren’t you the one who did all those things?!”

Then, he tossed out a card that contained only 16.80 dollars.

He threw out yet another medical report that stated that he was severely malnourished, suffered from low blood sugar, and had gastritis.

Finally, he showed everyone dozens of messages asking him to pay his loans after he fell behind on his payments.

“You can choose not to believe in me, Mom, but my life over the past year has been a living hell…”

Clark bit down on his lip and tried to hold back his sobs.

Everyone fell silent. They were all shocked and in disbelief.

When they looked toward me, their eyes were full of disdain and displeasure, as if I was a heinous criminal.

My eyes flew wide open, and I found the entire situation ridiculous. Unable to help myself, I said, “Wait… If you’re living such a horrible life, why didn’t you just call your mom?”

Clark was rendered speechless for a brief moment before he shouted in anger, “Don’t you think I tried?! You stopped me! You told me that Mom was busy, she wouldn’t have time for me, and she didn’t want to see me?

“I was wondering what I did wrong to make Mom so angry!”

Then, with a choked-up voice, he said, “Mom, I waited for an entire night for your phone call for my sixteenth birthday, but you didn’t call. I was so disappointed.

“For a moment, I even wanted to jump off a building so that I wouldn’t bother you anymore…”

Surprise flashed in Layla’s eyes. Then, she narrowed her eyes at me. The sharp eyes were filled with a dangerous glint. She said, “Rowan, if I remember correctly, I was out on a business trip during Clark’s birthday this year.

“I asked you to give him a watch. Did you?”

Her voice was calm, but it made chills crawl down my spine.

I was stunned before answering quickly, “I did, but he—”

But an indignant shout interrupted me.

“No! He’s lying!”

A boy stepped forward from the crowd.

“Hello, Miss Marsh. I’m Clark’s roommate and came here to work with him. I’m sorry, but I can’t watch this any longer. We celebrated his birthday together, and he was really sad because he got nothing from you!

“I know exactly how bad Clark’s life has been over the past year. We didn’t believe him in the beginning. How could the son of a rich family live in poverty?

“But he has been working while studying, and he never joins any of our trips or gatherings. He’s already fainted three times from low blood sugar during PE. As for his school uniform and textbooks, he had to borrow money for them.

“At his worst, he couldn’t even afford a razor. If you don’t believe me, I have these IOUs with me!”

Then, he brought stacks of handwritten IOUs worth fifty dollars and one hundred dollars.

The signatures at the end were all Clark’s.

In an instant, everyone burst into a ruckus.

Clark hung his head, and his eyes welled up in tears.

My explanations died in my throat.

Then, I looked at Layla’s profound gaze before asking softly, “Do you trust me?”

But the woman who usually doted on me did not answer. Her face was tense, and she had her lips pursed. A storm was brewing in her cold gaze.

In an instant, I felt my heart plummet.

Something akin to disappointment welled up in my chest.

But who was I? A professional freeloader.

I refused to be hurt by love.

From the corner of my eye, I saw smugness flash in Clark’s eyes.

I was puzzled.

Did he put himself in such a sorry state just to slander me, or was someone pulling the strings from the shadows?

Did Layla perhaps want to break up with me but did not want me to leave with dignity, and that was why she set this stage with Clark?

In an instant, all sorts of theories flashed in my mind.

Regardless of which was true, I was done playing along.

I turned on the banking app on my phone and pulled out the transaction records before saying coldly, “I won’t say anything else. Here are all the transaction records showing that I have been transferring thirty thousand dollars to Clark every month. Look.”

I raced down the road, but right before my car crashed into the railing, I jumped out of the driver’s seat without hesitation. In the blink of an eye, the car fell down the cliff. It let out a deafening boom as it exploded. In an instant, flames filled the sky. I cast one final glance at the limited-edition racecar Layla gave me and got into an MPV that had been waiting by the side for a long time. From that moment on, Rowan Stane the freeloader would no longer exist. Only Rowan Stane remained. …The “accident” shocked the entire city overnight. All sorts of rumors spread in the city. Everyone immediately turned against John and Clark. They began forming theories that my act of exposing Clark’s bad deeds had made John agree, so he cast all caution to the wind. In his unhinged state, he had gone after my life. After some investigation and reviewing the phone recordings I saved, the police managed to find that John was the one who hired the people to stalk and harass m

After that day, Layla started trying to win me over repeatedly. Not only did she book the largest billboard at the central business district to confess her love for me, she even released fireworks for seven days and seven nights by the river. The paparazzi also found her sitting outside my new place for an entire night while staring at my apartment in a daze. Her crazed actions shocked the entire city. For a time, everyone was shocked by the turn of events. Some people said angrily, “There are plenty of freeloaders like Rowan everywhere. Why should he have Miss Marsh’s love?”Some people were jealous. “I’ve never seen Miss Marsh so in love with a man before.”There were also some who sighed. “Looks like Miss Marsh has really fallen in love with that freeloader.”In any case, I became the hottest topic in upper-class society. Despite being surrounded by all the commotion, I felt no emotion stir in my heart. Sorry. I was no longer falling for that. However, everyone, in

“Dad!” Clark cried out in disbelief. Layla was the one who slapped John, and she pursed her lips. “You have no place to order my man around.”In his pathetic state, John stood still. He stared at Layla in shock and disbelief. “Haven’t you already broken up with him? Why are you still protecting him?! Clark said that this man has you wrapped around his little finger, and I didn’t believe him!“Are you really going to treat your own son like this for a lowlife like him? You even hit me! Do you know how hurt Clark is?! I’ve come here to clean up the mess, and you’re going up against me?!”Layla stared at him with a stony expression and said coldly, “You have no place to meddle with my affairs. Also, you’ve ignored Clark for ten years while you lived abroad. “Why are you pretending to be a good father now and standing up for him? Don’t go thinking that I don’t know you were the mastermind behind Clark’s antics this time!”“I…” John turned pale, and guilt flashed in his eyes. Thin

The man removed his sunglasses to show a sharp gaze. It was John Kent, Layla’s ex. He had been living abroad. Without batting an eyelid, I smiled. “What would you like to discuss, Mr. Kent?”He smiled as well and sat down with relaxed ease before saying calmly, “Don’t be nervous. I brought Clark here to apologize to you. He’s still immature. I hope you can be more understanding.”Then, he cast a glance at Clark, who was standing by the side with his fists clenched. Clark looked up in anger. With a pale face, he said reluctantly, “I’m sorry, Mr. Stane. I was rash. Please forgive me.”Out of spite, he turned his head to the side. I simply stared at the father-and-son duo and did not say anything. John said, “Mr. Stane, I heard that your parents passed, and you have no other family. After you graduated, you were an ordinary piano teacher, and you spent a lot of effort to ride on Layla’s coattails.”“Why don’t you get straight to the point?” I asked him coldly. John’s smile

That night, when I was sitting on the sofa in the villa and daydreaming, Layla appeared quietly behind me. “It’s late. Why are you still sitting there?”But I kept staring at a spot in a daze and did not get up to greet her, unlike before. Layla’s expression turned slightly dark. But she moved in front of me and looked down before quietly putting a ring on my ring finger. Her voice was much gentler than before, and there was a fawning note to it. “It suits you. Take it as my apology.”As I stared at the valuable ring, I knew that I would have been really excited in the past. I would have boldly hugged her, touched her, and kissed her. However, I removed it calmly and looked at her flatly. “Miss Marsh, do you remember saying that if I no longer want this relationship to continue, I can end it whenever I want? Does the offer still stand?”Layla was stunned for a brief moment. The gentle look on her face vanished in an instant as a cold expression replaced it. “You need to think

“You wouldn’t dare!” Layla hissed after recovering from her shock. Those words were laced with anger. But I stared at her fearlessly and said coldly, “I’ve already called the ambulance. But I need to make things clear here. I refuse to become a scapegoat.”Perhaps they did not expect to go up against my sugar mommy, because everyone was stunned. Meanwhile, Clark’s eyelashes fluttered, and his smile froze. “Stop pretending, Clark. I know you can hear me. I have to say, you put on an exciting show today. But freeloaders like me are used to keeping a clear record of every transfer of money from our sugar mommies. “We also categorize them, including the time and venue of each transaction. We also keep voice and video recordings.”Then, right before everyone’s shocked eyes, I projected the video on my phone on the screen in the hall. That video was from eight months ago, when Clark asked to see me. His cheeks were pink, the sign of health. He looked nothing like he did at that
