Chapter 5

History was whispering green glades through rolling hills ending toward ancient dilapidation scattered flatness, and the bus just rounded a bend, shedding down Ashwood's sprawling expanse below.

Eyes widened in amazement. "We're here."

Grinned Sebastian. "Finally."

Dr. Lee stood, gathering his belongings. "Okay, team. Let's get settled."

Open the door of the bus to release the team out in the air of Ashwood.

Adeline got out and inhaled deeply with history surrounding her.

Sebastian offered his hand, helping her down the steps.

Their fingers brushed before bursting into a flash of electricity.

"Thanks," Adeline said, smiling.

Sebastian held her gaze. "Anytime."

Dr. Lee directed the group to their accommodations, a rustic lodge close to the ruins.

It was her excitement that grew as they unpacked.

Tomorrow, they'd start research.

Sebastian joined her outside, taking in the ruins.

"Imagine what secrets we'll unearth," he said.

Adeline's eyes sparkled. "Together."

Their smiles hung in the air, promising adventure.

The sun sat low, casting golden light over Ashwood.

The team huddled around the roaring fire as Dr. Lee laid the plan before them.

Adeline observed well, with Sebastian's heat beside her.

It was the mysteries of Ashwood luring them into darkness.

Daylight met them the next day as they gathered at the lodge in readiness to start.

Distributing the assignments, Dr. Lee led them off toward their respective ruins.

Adeline and Sebastian went exploring together, delving deep into the heart of the ancient city.

Their footsteps echoed inside the desolate streets with history unfolding the history.

And caused electric sparks by brushing shoulders while handling artifacts.

"Check this out," Adeline whispered as she uncovered a hidden inscription.

Sebastian leaned in, breath tickling her ear.

"Incredible," he said, all his attention focused on her.

Eyes locked; around them the world faded.

For that split second, it's just them, lost in discovery.

"Time," Dr. Lee's millennia called in the real world.

The group gathered around once more to exchange information and laughs.

Adeline and Sebastian seated themselves side by side, legs entwined.

It was as if their bond strengthened with a gentle fire.

Further explorations showed the sun slowly setting.

Sebastian offered Adeline his hand, leading her through rocky footfalls.

Their fingers twined together, and electric current shot through them.

"Thank you," Adeline smiled into the intimate contact.

His eyes crinkled up. "Anytime."

The team came back from their day's journey; they looked a little spent but ecstatic.

Dr. Lee's eyes were twinkling. "Great first day, folks. Tomorrow, we get deeper."

As the stars shone brightly, At that moment, Adeline and Sebastian stayed back.

Theirs was a flow of words that started like a soft stream.

"What was your best moment of the day?" he said, Sebastian.

"Seeing that inscription with you," Adeline sparkled.

"Mine too," Sebastian's smile mirrored hers.

They were holed up behind that gaze, a promise for more.

Adeline wandered through moonlit paths of the garden, her thoughts meandering.

Sebastian stood at the balcony, drowsy from typing.

He looked towards the garden and saw Adeline.

Alone, lost in thought.

Sebastian's heart jumped.

He hesitated, then decided to join her.

He walked down the stairs, his footsteps soft across the lawn.

Adeline did not notice; her eyes caught in the stars.

Sebastian walked toward her, announcing himself with a soft cough.

Adeline turned toward him with a surprised-with-welcome look.

"Hey," Sebastian said, next to her on the bench.

"Couldn't sleep?"

Adeline shook her head vigorously. "Just lost in thought."

Sebastian nodded. "Want to share?"

Adeline again stared up into the stars.

"It was a great day, discovering that inscription..."

Sebastian smiled. "Oh, I know exactly what you mean."

Their shoulders touched, a spark of connection.

Adeline's voice lowered, becoming a whisper.

"Sometimes I feel that there's much more to life than just research."

Sebastian's eyes met hers.

"I suppose you are right," he said.

The stratified gaze hung in that air, the encumbering world receding away from them.

In that moment, they knew each other completely.

Adeline's voice was hardly above a whisper.

"Professor Wellesley, thank you for choosing me as your assistant."

Sebastian frowned. "You're a fantastic historian, Adeline."

Adeline's gaze fell.

"It's not all about research... or the opportunity."

Sebastian softened his eyes and asked, "What is it about then?"

Adeline poured forth words like the air being expelled from a released balloon.

"My parents expect me to join their company and make money—there's nothing more."

Her voice wavered.

"There's no adventure, no exploration about my dreams. It's almost like my father has snakes penned in the writing of my fate."

Tears welled.

"One feels like living a life of someone else. My passions, my desires—they're no more mine to claim."

Sebastian looked at her with pity.

"I understand, Adeline. You deserve to forge your own path."

He covered her hand with his.

"Here, with me, you're free to explore, to discover."

Adeline's eyes met his, gleaming with gratitude within them.

"Thank you, Professor Wellesley. You see me."

The quiet of the garden wrapped itself around them, cocooning them.

Sebastian lowered his voice, making it husky: "Call me Sebastian, Adeline, and let's shed the formalities that stand between us."

His eyes caught hers, warmth coursing through her like fire as he continued, "I know a place that this history speaks deeply of, a hidden gem that will take your breath away." A place "where ancient secrets whisper through the stones, and the air is rich with the murmurs of days gone by," he teased, smiling in, eyes crinkling at the corners. "Why don't you join me tomorrow, and let's figure it out as a team?" stood out in the Sebastian invitation, hanging in the air like a promise. Adeline's heart quickened at the thought of being able to go with Sebastian to discover what lies ahead in the unknown; curiosity sparked and senses woke up in her. "Where?" came out of her mouth much as a near-whisper, her words trembling with anticipation. Sebastian's face leaned in; his breath kissed her ear and sent shudders coursing straight down her spine. "Trust me, Adeline; you'll see. It's a place that will awaken your senses and ignite your passion for history." They made such magic for her vision. Adeline felt herself getting lost in the profoundness of his eyes. "Okay," she finally agreed, almost inaudibly, but a nod sealed that agreement.

Sebastian smiled bigger, sparkling with child's excitement in his eyes. "I will pick you up at dawn. Just be ready for an elective adventure."

The promise hung there, like a secret shared between them, and Adeline could feel the excitement swell in her, anticipation coursing through her veins.

Adeline's heart raced as she floated back to her room, Sebastian's words ringing in her head.

She closed the door behind her, leaning against it as if to anchor herself to reality.

But her thoughts refused to be tethered.

They soared, conjuring images of Sebastian's smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

She recalled the way his voice dropped to a husky whisper, sending shivers down her spine.
